In Praise of Pop Nonsense

Ask any idiot and they’ll tell you that music isn’t as good as it used to be. Of course, music is as brilliant, arousing, puzzling, woeful, tepid, boring and fantastic as it’s ever been. Every decade has been guilty of dreck and wonderment in equal measure.

you don't like them disses give my ass sum kissesCollapse )

What makes a pop song great, ONTD? Is it getting better or worse over time? Is Nicki Minaj secretly a genius? Is Led Zeppelin kinda overrated?

I used to be a ~classic rock snob. Now I'm just an everything snob. It's just that I don't understand how you can dismiss music just because it's old without acknowledging the impact it had on today's music. Or how you can be like ~I hate rap and country when you've only heard Drake and Taylor Swift.

I also used to be like "I would never marry a guy who listens to bad music" Lol high school.
menorahmajora 7th-May-2012 04:54 am (UTC)
I'm 25 and still wouldn't date a guy who listens to shit music, but only if it's an extreme like Nickelback or ICP. luckily the "worst" my boyfriend is into is like Hewey Lewis(he has a weird '80s infatuation but not with like Depeche Mode, The Misfits and The Smiths, aka the '80s bands I like.)
berry_wish 7th-May-2012 05:05 am (UTC)
Okay I would never date an ICP fan because Juggalos freak me out. But I can't hate too much on Nickleback fans. Probably because Nickleback is just so aggressively mediocre. It'd be like hating people who like vanilla ice cream. I wouldn't wanna party with them, but there's a very good chance that they don't realize what else is out there.

But oh man Huey Lewis. The 80s was a great time for fantastically terrible music
in_styles 7th-May-2012 05:56 am (UTC)
Drake is like barely even rap too. He's like more r&b imo.
eggtard 7th-May-2012 02:59 pm (UTC)
I actually couldn't marry somebody who has terrible taste in music (according to me, ofc). Music is such a huge part of my every day/playing all the time that I need the good stuff to be playing. We don't have to agree on everything, but if his 5 fav bands were offensive... no dice.
x_brittacular 7th-May-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
I actually like Nickelback. *special snowflake*
boltonlove 7th-May-2012 04:34 am (UTC)
I do too, I don't even care, tbh.
bssybuse 7th-May-2012 04:34 am (UTC)
they are better than Creed
boltonlove 7th-May-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
it shocks me that creed had more than 1 song
mistyraven 7th-May-2012 04:38 am (UTC)
I think some of Nickelback's songs are alright, but they become extremely repetitive pretty quickly.

But I'll still make fun of them as being horrible anyway
rebeljean 7th-May-2012 04:46 am (UTC)
Same tbh. I mean, they're aren't the best but they aren't he worst either. I find they're music catchy (right now I'm addicted to "Burn it to the Ground").
dearmisterecho 7th-May-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
their album "The State" was really good. They were my ~awesome band nobody knows about~ during that album, and then they released that next album that had "How you remind me" and they got HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE and terrible...
xpirate_queenx 7th-May-2012 04:36 am (UTC)
What the fuck is that picture?
rocksaltme 7th-May-2012 04:42 am (UTC)
I like that, with every thing that is going on in it, my eyes are drawn straight to whatever the hell it is that is going on with her eyebrows.

When you're wearing yellow lipstick with those lenses and neither are a focal point there is a problem.
boltonlove 7th-May-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
I can appreciate all music for what it is. I was raised listening to a bunch of different types of music. I listened to my mom's "oldies" and my brothers were really into rock and metal and I've always been a fan of pop and hip hop.
enid_keaner 7th-May-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
One of my best friends is a music elitist, and it drives me fucking crazy.

But she's hardcore musical elitist - like Bach is her fucking god and all lesser mortals bow before them. She was ~classically trained~ at a conservatory, so her opinion is worth all of ours.

I really want to roll my eyes at her.
hannahgrace456 7th-May-2012 04:43 am (UTC)
I know a girl at my school just like that. I go to a private performing arts high school with an emphasis in classical music and have been classically trained for years, but I don't go around spewing my knowledge of Bach and music's internal logic.
enid_keaner 7th-May-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
I just cannot with that attitude. She really hates the fact that I don't care much for Bach, even though I have explained to her that I don't care much in general for Baroque and I'm all about the Romantics.
menorahmajora 7th-May-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
Classical music bores the shit out of me.
grapefruitzzz 7th-May-2012 11:13 am (UTC)
Mind you, Bach is awesome background music for studying. It just poots along behind you, drowning out the traffic (...she's going to hunt me down and kill me, isn't she?)
rebeljean 7th-May-2012 04:43 am (UTC)
ch33rylips 7th-May-2012 06:13 am (UTC)
I loooooove this song.
browniecakemix 7th-May-2012 04:44 am (UTC)
Also can we stop ragging on Katy Perry? I understand she's not to everyone's taste but at least she is capable of stringing together some decent lyrics.
lestat 7th-May-2012 04:53 am (UTC)
she made ur gay so...
menorahmajora 7th-May-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
the people who write her songs are capable of stringing together some decent lyrics*
yamcha 7th-May-2012 04:58 am (UTC)
Yeah, she made ur so gay so I just can't listen to her by choice anymore.
ch33rylips 7th-May-2012 04:59 am (UTC)
jessepinkman 7th-May-2012 05:15 am (UTC)
lol in simplest terms
gorlfriend 7th-May-2012 05:06 am (UTC)
n

katy perry is the epitome of everything (if there is anything) wrong with american top 40. she literally has no talent. at least nicki minaj can rap well when she isn't pretending to be lady gaga..
revertigo 7th-May-2012 05:21 am (UTC)
i luv her now ever since i listened to her old stuff.

yikes
phillymademe 7th-May-2012 12:18 pm (UTC)
thank you! i got into Katy before her first album (as in One of the Boys) came out and she can write some good songs. I mean when she first came out she was being marketed as an Alanis Morrisette type of musician, but along the way just went totally pop. Hopefully she goes back to what she used to do (though i love Teenage Dream).
pretty_hostel 7th-May-2012 03:43 pm (UTC)
IT'S NOT OKAY TO RHYME "ME" WITH "ME" OKAY THAT'S NOT A THING THAT HAPPENS
dfabb 7th-May-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
What really makes me mad about pop today isn't the lyrics (I know it's bad guys but everyone brings out the tired old "Stupid Hoe" example all the time and it bores me), it's that for a while now it's been okay to be just an entertainer, not a singer. Some of the biggest names right now, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj etc. are incapable of actually singing their own songs, but it's okay because they wear unusual hair colors, weird outfits, and entertaining personalities/stage antics.

Even though I don't like Adele, I thank the lawd for people like her and Lady Gaga who can actually sing and bring the whole package of being a pop star.
bienenkiste 7th-May-2012 04:53 am (UTC)
ITA.
ch33rylips 7th-May-2012 05:00 am (UTC)
Lol pop stars have never had to be singers, but they've had to be entertainers and none of these new girls are entertains.
alexislex 7th-May-2012 02:37 pm (UTC)
I agree. I don't mind if my pop star cannot sing ballads, but they better put on a damn good show. The new girls that she listed cannot put on a show. Rihanna maybe. She's gotten better, but still lacks some stage presence.
Nicki is just a mess out there.
Katy relies too much on her stage.
dfabb 7th-May-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
I think I worded the comment completely wrong lol. I meant more like, they're weird/edgy and interesting in that way, not that they put on a great show.
grapefruitzzz 7th-May-2012 11:16 am (UTC)
But when you get too much of the 'good singers, pls' thing, you end up with Celine Dion and Leona Lewis standing about in glittery frocks like they're doing cabaret in 1979.
eggtard 7th-May-2012 03:03 pm (UTC)
I agree!

I don't need every pop star to be belting it out like Adele and Gaga, but if you look to queens like Robyn and Beyonce who make commercially viable (though, apparently not Bey anymore poor IV :() pop music and can sing it well live. It impresses me that Rihanna and Katy Perry sing live considering how terrible they are, but, I'll never be able to truly like them because of it.

spillvegas 7th-May-2012 04:52 am (UTC)
i don't really like Gaga but every since my coworker played "hair" in his car im addicted WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME

also I like "Dear Old Nicki"...a lot
callme_morbid 7th-May-2012 04:58 am (UTC)
i'm mostly indifferent about today's pop artists tbh. they have some awesome, catchy songs that i shamelessly love..... but overall i don't consider any of them exceptional performers. this isn't a new phenomenon tho, it applies to other eras too (which is why mj, prince, whitney, etc stand out imo!)
but the led zep/classic rock hegemony is such bullshit. ppl need to stop acting as if british men were the only innovative artists in the industry.
romp 7th-May-2012 05:00 am (UTC)
bless NME--I agree with this

yesss

audio video disco is perfect
yamcha 7th-May-2012 05:23 am (UTC)
I know!!! The whole album is flawless, and after Cross I didn't think they would be able to get much better.
dearmisterecho 7th-May-2012 05:01 am (UTC)
Living outside of the States, I watch Billboard top 40 of the week videos on youtube to keep in touch with what's popular

And these days it's like

30% country
50% electro/dubstep using the EXACT SAME beat
20% random other like Adele, Gotye, that "Call me Maybe" girl

It's pretty tiresome. Makes me thankful I'm not stuck at my old job and had to listen to top 40 music all the time.

And Kelly Clarkson needs to GTFO with her soulless "omg be yerself!!1!!" anthems.
gorlfriend 7th-May-2012 05:04 am (UTC)
no kelly clarkson is flawless
dearmisterecho 7th-May-2012 05:10 am (UTC)
she has a great voice but it seems like most of her hits lately have been in the vein of "be yourself, don't let anyone hold you down, be strong" and it feels so shallow

plus I have an irrational hatred for that stupid ass dance her and the other random folks do in that video
immaflirt 7th-May-2012 05:13 am (UTC)
oh there's a yt channel covering Billboard top 40?
liferekindled 7th-May-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
kelly is flawless
xzackb 7th-May-2012 05:49 am (UTC)
smh @ u, kelly's anthems are beautiful and have always been.
chantonii 7th-May-2012 06:55 am (UTC)
Yeah, I haven't liked Kelly's stuff in a while.
grapefruitzzz 7th-May-2012 11:04 am (UTC)
In the UK, it's 80% r'n'b, 10% dance 10% Adeleoids. I don't mind a good rnb song but I do wish the music video channels would play something else (apart from when they have a Crazee Rawk Week and play all that American Jared Leto stuff)
tsaraven 7th-May-2012 12:44 pm (UTC)
That is much more diverse than it's ever been though. I had older relatives of mine on fb talking about how much more awesome and diverse the chart was in their day so I looked to compare. The year they were talking about was 99% rock n' roll (old 50s style) and 1% ballroom dancing music. I checked the early 80s and it was 40 of the same kind of pop songs- no country, no rap. The current chart has Adele, straight up country, straight up rap, dance, bubblegum pop, etc.
