Justin Bieber: "I'm Always Held Back in Interviews"

We're here to discuss his new fragrance, Someday. It's a female scent packaged in a pretty bottle and girls everywhere have been queuing to buy it. So far, so celebrity. But here's the difference: $2 from every 100ml bottle sold in Australia goes to the Make-A-Wish Foundation (the scent's distributor, Escentials Brands, has also donated $50,000 to the organisation), with the remaining net profits going to one of the 20 international charities Bieber is associated with.

"I'm so blessed to be in this position," he says. "With everything I do, I try to give back."

Most of the projects the 18-year-old singer donates to are aimed at children, with a focus on enabling underprivileged kids to get ahead. "I love the fact young people can help other young people," he says. "I grew up without a lot of money. There are kids around the world who don't have the chance to go to school. I want to be able to help them, you know?"

His own education was completed on the road, in between touring, recording and fending off fans. "I just finished high school," he reveals. "I passed my test - I'm free! It was hard doing school and work every day."

Despite his success in the music industry, Bieber was driven to finish his education by his mother. "That was something my mom really wanted me to do, so I had to do it for her," he adds. "I mean, this kind of lifestyle has given me a different perspective on life. I've been able to travel the world. At school, usually you have to do a lot of writing and reading. I'm really not into that stuff. I like to be out there."

Bieber's latest single, 'Boyfriend', was released in March and his album, Believe, will be out in June. It features Kanye West and Drake, and has been touted as having a more grown-up sound. "Yeah, what's so important about this album is showing I'm growing up but I'm also not losing my fans," he says. "My fans are growing with me and that's why I think it's very special."

He's previously talked about how his lyrics allow him to say things he doesn't publicly comment on. I suspect this is a veiled reference to 20-year-old Mariah Yeater who, late last year, claimed Bieber was the father of her baby, until lawyers became involved and she dropped the paternity suit.

"There are people who say negative things," he admits. "There are things I want to get off my chest that I haven't been able to say. In interviews, I'm always held back, because I can't say the wrong thing."

I put it to him that it must be difficult to constantly self-censor. "I mean, it can be frustrating at times but, you know, you have to be the bigger person and not let things get under your skin."

That's a big weight for a teenager to carry but, even so, he's not sure he could go back to being 'normal'. "You know, the grass is always greener," he says with a laugh. "If I was in Canada, I'd be wishing I was here doing all this stuff. I'm really happy to be where I am and I wouldn't trade it for the world."

One person who understands how it feels to live in the world of teenage superstardom is Bieber's girlfriend, 19-year-old Disney starlet Selena Gomez. The couple met through their managers and have been dating for almost 18 months. Initially, Gomez faced the wrath of the Beliebers, although now most fan forums admonish the haters, pleading, "If you're a real fan, you'll want Justin to be happy." I suggest it must be hard having to seek approval from millions of strangers about your first serious girlfriend.

"I don't hide it, but I don't go in anybody's face," he says with a sigh. "What I do in my home or in my own time is my personal life, so I don't give too much of that away, but I also don't hide it, you know?"

Bieber admits the fact he and Gomez lead similar lives, with heavy workloads and lots of international travel, is central to their relationship. "Yeah, that's part of the reason we get on so well. But as I said, I like to keep that stuff private."

And perhaps he has a point. When you create headlines worldwide just by cutting your hair, as he did last year when he changed his trademark side-swept fringe to a shorter, spikier do, maybe you have to be wary about what you divulge.

"Here's the thing - I'm my own person,"he says. "I don't make my decisions based around what people are going to think about me; I make them based on what I want to do and who I think I want to be. If none of this was happening, if there were no cameras around me, that's the kind of person I'd want to be - a good person."

Not enough, obviously, considering some shit he's said in the past.
scheisse 5th-May-2012 07:49 pm (UTC)
ugh, he's such a transparent, rape-supporting douche, but i can't hate on his philanthropy. he's setting a good example, so good for him.
ballsmazig 5th-May-2012 08:48 pm (UTC)
lol that's kind of reaching to say he's a rape supporter...

but yeah I also like his philanthropy but I am nitpicky about causes. The Make A Wish foundation pisses me off -_-
clairemuch 6th-May-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
Why, out of interest?
ballsmazig 6th-May-2012 05:21 am (UTC)
I don't want to hate on anybody who donates to it or supports it. I just want to clarify that. It's hard to hate on any individual for doing a selfless and generous act, even if it's ignorant. It just bothers me that something like "Make-a-wish" exists in the first place.

Children dealing with illness is a terrible thing. It's shitty and unfair. It's also shitty and unfair that there are tons of kids in the world who don't even have basic treatment for these illnesses. Some places where they can't even get a painkiller or a doctor to see them. Then there's all these first world children with the best treatment available, but it's so important that we give them trips to disneyland and visits from justin bieber. That's all a luxury. Which is nice to give to kids going through a shitty time. Yeah they may have the best treatment for their physical health, but mental health is important too. Fun stuff like that lightens the load. But that is way down the line of priorities in my mind. We need to take care of the kids in the world who dont get ANY treatment, let alone celebrity visits. let's give everybody equal medical care first, then let's try and raise their spirits.

I just wish the theory of communism worked. Because the theory is very nice, and would solve my issue with this! But the world and individuals obviously do not work that way lol. I can't change the world but I change what I do and what charities and causes I support and hopefully inspire other people while doing it. I feel really strongly about this especially recently because my work held a fundraiser that raised $100,000+ for our local hospital. Their marketing statement for this event said "much needed items for our hospital". Things like... a blanket warmer and a portable ultrasound. Like really. Really. $8000 to have warm blankets? $40,000 to have a portable ultrasound machine. Heaven forbid it can only stay in one place and people have to GO to it themselves. And I was talking about that with people at the fundraising event and someone was like "um these aren't luxuries, these things are really really needed". I had to get up and go to the bathroom so I could cry at that point. Bullshit. Go to a place in the world where there's NO hospital or even a clinic and tell them the fucking blanket warmer is "actually needed tho and not a luxury". You need a blanket warmer so bad? take my fucking microwave. or get your own, it was only 15$ at the thrift store. Fucking capitalism/ignorance/living in a bubble/first world people ughhhhhhh

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

dare i ask, how is he a rape supporter?
lumosofmylife 5th-May-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't go as far as saying he's a rape supporter, but he's against abortion and when talking about pregnancy from rape, he said something along the lines of, "everything happens for a reason~"
ballsmazig 6th-May-2012 05:27 am (UTC)
lol he's not. they're reaching hard.

he's pro-life. and when asked if he thought abortion was okay if somebody got pregnant from rape, he tried to stand up in his beliefs by saying "everything happens for a reason" but he also said "he can't really say since he's never been in that situation". it was a fair answer, and it was a more of a question about pro-life vs. pro-choice. not really about rape itself lol.

Damn if he's held back in interviews, how much of a magadouche is he in real life?
caulifloral 5th-May-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
why would it make him a megadouche to lash out @ someone smearing you in the press?
faz1988 5th-May-2012 08:01 pm (UTC)
He's a celeb- a life which he chose. As a result you have to deal with the media. It's part of the deal. That's like being a doctor and saying you hateeee being on call. Like, i get that it's not pleasant, but I'm sure you can go home and count your money so chill.
hungthem00n 5th-May-2012 08:04 pm (UTC)
No that's like being a Dr and getting sued for sexual misconduct while you are giving an exam when no such thing happened. Be real.
faz1988 5th-May-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
Actually yeah you're right. I wouldn't say sexual misconduct, but malpractice in general. It's part of being a doctor. People are always going to want to sue you, blame you, etc if things don't happen the way they want. That's why all doctors have malpractice lawyers.

All professions have upsides and downsides, and this is the main downside to being a celeb.
hungthem00n 5th-May-2012 08:10 pm (UTC)
Yea, IA it should be expected but I was just saying its way more serious than being on call lol; a baby ain't no joke
caulifloral 5th-May-2012 08:06 pm (UTC)
this.
caulifloral 5th-May-2012 08:05 pm (UTC)
tbh having someone allege that you fathered their child in a stadium bathroom after refusing to wear a condom is over the line as far as "dealing with the media" goes. i agree that celebs shouldn't be ott whiny about getting photographed by paps or even having gossip bloggers snark on them...but mariah yeater was way over the line into slander imo and i don't think he should be blamed for still being bitter about it a few months later.
hungthem00n 5th-May-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
Esp when shes a girl and everyone's going to be like oh poor baby and make him into a monster; i will forever love that scooter stood by biebs and was like hell no, we are not giving you a pay day just to shut you up, we're suing back. How quickly she shut her trap and her lawyers(how sick that they were just looking for a payday as well...) ran for their mommies...

I think people are kidding themselves if they think Bieber isn't kept on a tight leash; his management and MOTHER for god's sake are everywhere he is, you really think they would lose him in a bathroom for 10 minutes with some rando chick? No.
caulifloral 5th-May-2012 08:16 pm (UTC)
she lost all credibility imo when she claimed she was picked out of the audience (during a show she wasn't even in the right state to be at) by one of his bodyguards along with a bunch of other fangirls and that he then started making out with her in front of them. sis, beliebers are HARDCORE and jealous as HELL, you know it would've been all over social media the second that happened.

but yeah, he's definitely well-supervised - or was in the past, i think he's getting a lot more leeway as he gets older. i'm really happy with how his team handled this mess.
hungthem00n 5th-May-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
he should get more leeway to be honest. he's an adult now. before he was a kid and i thought his team did a bang up job of letting him be a kid but still teaching him to present himself well(minus a few comments here or there, but kids will be kids); it's like, if I remember myself at 15-17 i said some stupid as HELL things too so he looked like a gem
hungthem00n 5th-May-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)

lol if holding back was saying rape happens for a reason I don't even imagine what he would've said if he wasn't really holding back, oop.

and it bugs me when people say they don't like to read but he can stay dumb and uneducated, idc
evett 5th-May-2012 11:12 pm (UTC)
"There are people who say negative things," he admits. "There are things I want to get off my chest that I haven't been able to say. In interviews, I'm always held back, because I can't say the wrong thing."

says the guy who said pregnancy from rape happens for a reason. If only he was aborted.
evett 5th-May-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
How is what necessary? The fact that I wish he was aborted? It is very necessary. Now you don't have to wonder.
