I've lurked in the fandom for a while, but didn't start writing until around Thanksgiving 2008 (the US election was making me crazy, so I thought I'd hunt down some fanfic, then didn't see what I wanted to read, and here I am, four years later. Lawd.)
I think the reason why people were giving Tony the side eye because the powers that be at Marvel were on Tony's side. To the point of them saying, "Tony was right!" worn by characters in their T-shirts in the comic (how meta), and it got up certain people's noses, I think. But yeah, when it came out, and scans_daily was on LJ, well... their views on the Civil War was passionate. Deeply so.
All of the Avengers make choices that suck, and Tony, to me, always takes 100 percent accountability for his choices in a way that, imo, Cap didn't in CW.
Yeah, say what you want about Tony, but he tends to meet things head on, and struggle through. Half the time he's normally on his own with his choices and takes it on the chin.
The thing with Cap in Civil War, or really, in most of his outlook - he tends to think that everyone will act like him. Of course he'd be responsible and do the right thing, but not everyone has his pov and statue. Again, not that I was all for the SHRA, but I can see why it was seen as attractive by the powers that be.
A lot of the frustration was the fact that Tony and Steve didn't get to talk. That they were so caught up in their respective viewpoints (especially Steve) the rest was white noise. Tony tried to go against the act, realised that sometimes, you have to be in teh system to change it (and an argument can be made for either point).
Civil War, man. The amount of fanfic I've written that comes around to Civil War is ridic - and I am not done exploring that theme yet.
Haha, I know the feeling. So what comms do you recommend to a 'lil noob like me? :)
Yeah, I agree that was heavyhanded. It's good that it got such strong reactions out of its audience, but still, author bias=bad. :p
he tends to think that everyone will act like him ITA. It's the best thing about him and his downfall, all at once, that he believes the best of people and that people always have the best interests and pure motives, but I think in CW and some other times it interferes with his judgement and ability to be rational. I think maybe that's why I love Tony so much, that he makes the hard choice almost so Cap CAN continue to be like that. At least that's my reading.

You're not wrong. When you actually think about it, Tony has age on Steve, and Steve is from a time where things were black and white, not so much shades of grey. So yeah, Tony can do this, because it won't break him, in a way that it might break Steve. Strange relationship, but it works for them.

You're not wrong. The movies and the cartoons do make the universe tidy in a way that the comics cannot do.

Hmmm. Right now, there's such a plethora of comms popping up overnight like mushrooms after a hard spring shower.
Well, there's cap_ironman. The comm is pretty active, and they accept fic from all Marvel universes. If nothing else, their links to various aspects of the universe can be helpful. There is the avengers comm on LJ (can't remember it's official name, it's something like avengers big bang) that's going to have big bang fics for it around August of this year, so that's something to look for.
If you subscribe to comicstore_news and have it on your flist, it's a newsletter (more or less daily) roundups of new comms, fic, and news from both Marvel and DC universes.
