'The Office's Jenna Fischer: 'Pressure to lose baby weight is unnatural'

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Jenna Fischer has called the pressure for women to lose weight after giving birth "unnatural".

The Office actress welcomed a baby boy named Weston Lee with husband Lee Kirk in September 2011.

In an interview with Celebuzz, Fischer condemned the industry for pressuring women to look a particular way after having children.

"I think it's unnatural. There's so much pressure on you as a new mom that the last thing you need to have hanging over your head is some expectation of what your body is supposed to look like. I actually think that the scrutiny of new mothers' bodies has gotten out of control," she explained.

"Every new mother just gets a free pass. I'm actually angered by the 'posing in a bikini six weeks after having my baby' [trend]... Who cares if our boobs are hanging low and we have a little more junk in the trunk? We created a human being, everybody. Let's celebrate!"

Fischer recently revealed that she and her Office castmates want a ninth season of the show but are waiting to hear whether the network has renewed their contracts.

No lies detected.
violue 2nd-May-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
I so agree.

There were some comments shortly after Hilary Duff gave birth that while not vicious, were so fucking ridiculous. There were people expressing surprise/judgment that she hadn't lost the weight and it had been MAYBE a week.
little_kitkat 2nd-May-2012 03:06 am (UTC)
Whoa, are you shitting me?
That's redic.
actxappalledx 2nd-May-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
yea, i just made a similar comment. one poster was going on about how her body was destroyed when it's been a month since she had her baby
modern_toilet 2nd-May-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
yep, it's legit. and now it's been like 6 weeks and she's going to pilates and spin everyday and people are still commenting how it's "nice" that she's NOT working herself to get back in shape. i was like ":O :O :O :O :O".
mari_lyn00 2nd-May-2012 10:54 am (UTC)
lol yes! girl was out like days later going on with life (hard enough with a new damn baby!) and people were wondering why she still looked like she just gave birth. WTF?
jmfunnyface 2nd-May-2012 01:27 pm (UTC)
When my friend gave birth, her MIL tried to pressure her into only eating salads 2 days after giving birth. She was like, "You're not one of those people who loses the weight right after. You have to start getting your figure back." Ridiculous.
josiefier 2nd-May-2012 03:00 am (UTC)
Can't argue here.
klutzy_girl 2nd-May-2012 03:00 am (UTC)
Good for her! I love Jenna's stance on this.

sheinhardt 2nd-May-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
same. it's great but steve leaving should've been the series finale tbh. they're beating a dead horse at this point!
cluelessraf 2nd-May-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
Same goes for 30 Rock tbh, I watched 2-3 episodes this season and I just couldn't anymore.
hoot 2nd-May-2012 11:20 am (UTC)
That was actually a good episode too (a rarity the past couple of years)!

suburban_war 2nd-May-2012 03:18 am (UTC)
I wish that a couple of episodes from seasons 5-7 were made earlier so that the show could have ended respectfully lol
malarkiness 2nd-May-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
Seriously. I was curious about the direction it'd go after Steve left, but some of these episodes have just been painful.
legenxxdary 2nd-May-2012 03:25 am (UTC)
Yeah... I think they squeezed their last bit of creativity/hilarity left when they did the last season w/ Michael Scott..
goofusgallant 2nd-May-2012 03:28 am (UTC)
Seriously.
lovedhurtlost 2nd-May-2012 03:50 am (UTC)
Nah, another year. I still find it funny.
yousaidlog 2nd-May-2012 03:57 am (UTC)
I agree. I was an 'Office' stan for the longest time, and I can barely get through the new episodes : / I just keep rewatching season 2.

ilikeandrewbird 2nd-May-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
I think women have a lot of ridiculous pressures, but I dont feel bad for celebrities who are expected to lose the weight quickly.

She is paid millions for her image/looks/performance/etc. She can easily take a year off and be a mom. But if she wants to jump back into work, then she shouldn't complain IMO.
klutzy_girl 2nd-May-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
But she's not complaining...

Jenna just thinks that the pressure to lose weight is stupid, and she sees no sense in rushing to do so.
ilikeandrewbird 2nd-May-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
I posted before I read the article. My bad.

You're right.
_thirty2flavors 2nd-May-2012 03:13 am (UTC)
Depends on the actress, though. I don't know what Jenna makes an episode but could she really take a year off, especially with the show in a precarious position? She's not a movie actress A-lister who can maybe kill some time between projects. I love her but lbr, when The Office ends so will her steady paycheck, because she'll be Pam Beesly forever.
hera_bearrra 2nd-May-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
Not every actress has the luxury of taking time off work, though. Do you think if Jenna Fischer disappeared for a year it'd be easy for her to find work again? She's not an established actress. She's pretty much only known for one role, despite appearing in a few movies here and there.

There's also the issue of the industry putting more pressure on women in regards to their looks compared to men. Men in Hollywood gain weight (for whatever reason) but no one bats an eye. Unfair double standards.
roxiful 2nd-May-2012 03:20 am (UTC)
Women get shit regardless of whether or not they go back to work asap or not.
grilled_cheese 2nd-May-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
lol wut? Part of the genius of her casting on the Office is because she's kind of average looking and hence looks like an office worker. Maybe she makes a lot of money and maybe she could (after the Office wraps) take time off to lose the weight but really, you think she is getting paid for being hot? LOL
soul_amazinn 2nd-May-2012 03:34 am (UTC)
She can easily take a year off and be a mom.

lmao Um. No.
ayedel 2nd-May-2012 04:53 am (UTC)
Uhm no. Her roles were never about being sexy and hot, just an average female character. It's not right that she's under the same pressure to lose weight like those sex symbols. If she was a model/bombshell, I would agree, but she's not.
adri278 2nd-May-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
The Office really needs to end already. It needed to end about 3 seasons ago.
adri278 2nd-May-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
Also, I didn't get back to my pre-pregnancy weight until 2 years later, but I did get back.
angry_azn_girl 2nd-May-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
The pressure for women to have perfect bodies at all times, period, is unnatural tbh.

Yeah sometimes when people comment on people's bodies on here I die a little inside. Like if people really think what they say about these people around here, I wonder what the fuck people think about me IRL.

recenthistory 2nd-May-2012 03:07 am (UTC)
I feel bad, cause I have totally taken notice to how slowly she is losing the weight...
iwalkintodoors 2nd-May-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
slowly?...you mean how she's losing weight at a NORMAL and HEALTHY rate?

you think mariah and all those crazy bitches lost weight through exercise and eating right? it's all lipo and crazy dieting. not healthy or normal.
recenthistory 2nd-May-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
Slowly as in compared to current Hollywood standards. As in exactly what she is talking about.

She can stay chunky if she wants but if I was rich, I'd be with my personal trainer 24/7.
sinwithagrin 2nd-May-2012 03:32 am (UTC)
I got the point, it's just my personal preference.
beatlesluv 2nd-May-2012 03:45 am (UTC)
Personally I've been on both ends of the scale; I've been overweight and I'm fit now. TBH, my body is important to me, maintaining it is important to me. So I probably would/will keep up with my yoga/spinning/pilates when pregnant b/c I want to keep in shape. But for me not anyone else. So I see the point you're making. I also don't think women should feel pressured to loose weight, it's a personal thing.
permanentrain 2nd-May-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
ita gurl
actxappalledx 2nd-May-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
I totally agree. A lot of the posters here are really disgusting about it, too. I remember one poster saying that Hilary Duff's body was "ruined" and that her baby "destroyed her body" when it's been like a month since she gave birth. I know this is ~ONTD and people say stupid shit all the time, but that's just gross and disgusting
roxiful 2nd-May-2012 03:29 am (UTC)
Some people are incredibly scared of pregnancy!
actxappalledx 2nd-May-2012 03:36 am (UTC)
Uhm.. that is no excuse to say that a woman 3 weeks after giving birth has a "destroyed body" because she has kept her pregnancy weight instead of running into the gym the next morning to make hollywood happy
soul_amazinn 2nd-May-2012 03:37 am (UTC)
ONTD hates babies and doesn't understand the way women's bodies work. Not surprising.

It's disgusting that after 3-6 weeks a woman is being judged for not looking the way she did before her pregnancy.
beatlesluv 2nd-May-2012 03:45 am (UTC)
smh ia
