Movie ordered about the Winchester Mystery House

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

In the first deal of its kind, the San Jose, California based Winchester Mystery House considered the “world’s most haunted house” is authorizing Hammer, an Exclusive Media company, the use of its unique property for a feature film based on its legendary story. Hammer has optioned all rights to develop and produce the feature film with Imagination Design Works (IDW) and Nine/8 Entertainment, it was announced today by Simon Oakes, Vice-Chairman of Exclusive Media and President & CEO of Hammer, and Guy East and Nigel Sinclair, Co-Chairmen of Exclusive Media.

Production on the supernatural horror film currently in development will be overseen by Exclusive Media’s Tobin Armbrust, President of Worldwide Production and Acquisitions, and Shira Rockowitz, Director of Development and Production. Brett Tomberlin and Antonia Lianos will produce for Imagination Design Works, Inc along with Andrew Trapani and Brian Gilbert for Nine/8 Entertainment.

"The Winchester House has a rich and compelling history. The story behind how it was built has attracted a great deal of attention over the years and we are excited to bring that mythology to film," said Tobin Armbrust. "We are also thrilled, and terrified, that the House has allowed us to film on the premises."

"We are extremely excited to be partnering with Exclusive Media to bring the story of the Winchester Mystery House to a global audience. For many years, the mystique and history of this unique venue, and its owner Sarah Winchester, could be experienced only by those visiting the site. Now, with a film shot in and around the House, Sarah's spirit will be brought back to life, and the audience will see first-hand this stunning and bizarre house," said Brett Tomberlin, President, Imagination Design Works.

The Winchester Mystery House has a startling history and attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists annually. Popular belief holds that Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune, was convinced she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by "the gun that won the west." Following a Medium’s advice, Sarah built a massive house in Northern California to appease the spirits. For the next 38 years, she never stopped building believing that if she continued, she would live forever, and if she stopped, she would die. Known as the "house built for the spirits," there have been many inexplicable ghost sightings and to this day, visitors share their terrifying stories of having been in the presence of these departed souls who continue to roam the grounds of the intricate and enigmatic house.

Didn't read the entire article but is this the house that the woman kept remodling?
_cheshire 27th-Apr-2012 01:53 pm (UTC)
yeah it is.
guzzlemuzzle 27th-Apr-2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
She kept adding on to it, so there are doors and stairways to nowhere.
javdiosa80 27th-Apr-2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
Yeah, the story goes something like she went a little nuts and thought spirits were following her and so she built all kinds of rooms, passages, staircases that went to nowhere to confuse the spirits or something like that. She's the wife of the man who invented the Winchester rifle and was a millionaire.
cluelessraf 27th-Apr-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
They should base AHS there tbh!
where_i_begin 28th-Apr-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
The story's right in the article, why repeat it?
sowhat_whocares 27th-Apr-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
the owner (widow of the owner of Winchester rifles) was told by a psychic that the ghosts of all the people killed by the rifles her family produced were haunting her/after her. and the only way to escape them was to keep building her house; if she stopped building it they would get her. so they never stopped building it...there was always construction for YEARS AND YEARS, there was always someone in the houses working out it, expanding it, even in the middle of the night.

they started making rooms for no purpose, weird staircases, layouts that made no sense. this was also to confuse the ghosts that were following her around.

the story about the earthquake there was pretty trippy though.
swanwitch 27th-Apr-2012 08:32 pm (UTC)
Ugh, then read it and don't ask dumb questions.
javdiosa80 27th-Apr-2012 01:52 pm (UTC)
I live fairly close to this place and have never been there. I know people that have gone during the night tour they give on Halloween and say it's creepy as fuck.
sleepiebedhead 27th-Apr-2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
same here! when my cousins from france came to visit, this was one of those touristy places we were going to hit up, but when we actually got there, it looked super boring in the date time and we ended up across the street watching movies instead.
lauren_1021 27th-Apr-2012 02:52 pm (UTC)
I went and it was just sad. I didn't find it nearly as scary as I'd hoped, more sad that this little old lady was all alone and kept building and building until she died.
pikakyo 27th-Apr-2012 03:10 pm (UTC)
I'm from San Jose and I used to go to the winchester house a lot. The night tour is the only thing that's worth it tbh. Only to fuck with people in your tour group and the group behind you.
happy_endings11 27th-Apr-2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
It's really not. I went othe midnight Halloween tour and it was just a old house. It's amazing, don't get me wrong, but not creepy.
iamshal 27th-Apr-2012 05:17 pm (UTC)
Same! I live in Monterey and I've still never been.
ev1lkitkat 27th-Apr-2012 01:52 pm (UTC)
I've been to the Winchester Mystery House, and it is spooky and awesome.

That is all.
_cheshire 27th-Apr-2012 01:52 pm (UTC)
that house is so deliciously creepy.

Also let's make this a creepy post guys! I've got 5 hours to kill at work and I'm bored already :/

i cant watch this right now, but is this the episode where he has to cut the investigation short because of ~weird feelings and then he finds out that his grandma died around that same time?
ani_di_franco 27th-Apr-2012 04:49 pm (UTC)
Yes.
fanskap 27th-Apr-2012 04:49 pm (UTC)

zoozootaz 27th-Apr-2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
the House has allowed us to film on the premises

idky this is making me lol.
wingslapped 27th-Apr-2012 01:58 pm (UTC)
lol that makes it sound like someone communed with the spirit of the house and asked its permission.
onyxobsidian 27th-Apr-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
I picture a big boardroom in Hollywood of a bunch of men sitting around, and the guy at the head of his table slamming his fist down, yelling, "DAMN IT! The House STILL won't sign the contract! WE NEED THAT HOUSE."
vickyblueeyez 27th-Apr-2012 01:59 pm (UTC)
Fuckin film crew need to watch it. Open the wrong damned door and you're dead. Splat
loosedefense 27th-Apr-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
what was haunted about this house? i thought the lady of the house, Sarah, was just told by someone (or had a dream or something) that all the ghosts of all the people who died from the Winchester guns would kill her if she ever stopped building the house, so it just went on eternal construction until the day she died right? I don't think there were any ghosts that actually haunted the house?
queenweasley 27th-Apr-2012 02:34 pm (UTC)
that's what i thought too.
chimbleysweep 27th-Apr-2012 02:38 pm (UTC)
People think that there are ghosts of the construction workers and even Sarah's ghost still there :|

I've seen far too many Travel Channel shows that feature it.
aprilmaranda 27th-Apr-2012 02:39 pm (UTC)
I think you're right.
lauren_1021 27th-Apr-2012 02:53 pm (UTC)
That's what it is. I've been and it wasn't scary at all. More sad than anything else.
padlock 27th-Apr-2012 03:46 pm (UTC)
maybe that will be the twist in the movie, haunted by these ghosts all along and in the end you realize that just the old lady is insane hhaha
omgshooz 27th-Apr-2012 04:13 pm (UTC)
The story goes that her workers haunt the house today because they still feel the need to always keep working, since back in the day she had construction going 24/7 and was a really strict boss.

I worked there during high school, but the only things that ever happened to me were doors slamming on the inside of the house. My co-workers had more interesting stories though. I'm still not quite sure what I believe.
romp 28th-Apr-2012 03:51 am (UTC)
same--sounds like a very weak premise for a movie
the_wolski 27th-Apr-2012 02:03 pm (UTC)
omg the history behind it sounds like it would make a great movie tbh

as long as they don't make it a typical horror movie and more of a psychological one
onyxobsidian 27th-Apr-2012 04:02 pm (UTC)
The opening scene will be Becky and Tessa giggling and going inside the house to prove to their hot boyfriends that "WE'RE NOT SCARED! HA HA HA!" And they go in for a while, then the guys hear a loud bang and a scream, and shout, "NICE TRY!" Then Tessa comes out covered in dust and blood screaming "THEY GOT BECKY! THEY GOT BECKY!" so the guys go in to help Becky, and the girls were playing a joke on them all along, and as the boys shout that they'll get back at the girls, something comes out and kills them all. We don't know what, tho. Foreshadowing and shit.
grumpibear501 27th-Apr-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)

goo82 27th-Apr-2012 02:11 pm (UTC)
I literally just got done watching the Ghost Hunters on this house.. I am having a marathon :)
starbeams 27th-Apr-2012 02:43 pm (UTC)
omg i spent the last part of that episode just wondering why they're trying to teach ghosts to basically travel through computers to other places and sad about his grandmother. I felt like they didn't really investigate the house properly and want them to do it again :(
belladonnastrap 27th-Apr-2012 02:15 pm (UTC)
Creepy post during the day while I'm at work? Awesome, maybe I'll be able to sleep tonight unlike the last one XD
lillylilacs 27th-Apr-2012 02:15 pm (UTC)
I always thought Stephen King's miniseries Rose Red was ~inspired by this house. It was ridiculous but I also found it so creepy that I decided to wait till morning to finish it.
mistycreed 27th-Apr-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
It was inspired by it.
lillylilacs 27th-Apr-2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
oh okay, I checked the wiki but it doesn't actually say that it was the inspiration
lipstickbitches ugh27th-Apr-2012 02:35 pm (UTC)
I read The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer and thought it was real until i saw the back cover where it says it was fiction. i was so pissed off at myself for that
room_102 27th-Apr-2012 02:15 pm (UTC)
Went on the tour last summer. It was fun and loved the architecture and history.
