vampire YA book gets optioned

Palomar Pictures Acquires Young Adult Series ‘Blood Of Eden’
Another young adult book series has been acquired in hopes that it will bring a new franchise for some lucky studio. This time it’s Julie Kagawa’s teen vampire series ‘Blood of Eden.’

Deadline is reporting that the production company Palomar Pictures (‘K-19: The Widowmaker’) has bought the screen rights to ‘Blood of Eden,’ a vampire genre book series written by Julie Kagawa. The first book in the series is called ‘The Immortal Rules’ which was just published yesterday.

Palomar exec Joni Sighvtsson says of the acquisition, “It’s simply a great story with an electrifying heroine. It makes the series an ideal subject for a film adaptation. Julie’s ability to familiarize the reader with this complex world in a few pages demonstrates the cinematic qualities of her imagination and complements my own sensibilities as a film producer.”

‘The Immortal Rules’ sounds like it could easily take the place of ‘The Twilight Saga’ once the last film of that movie franchise is released. In the novel, a deadly virus pretty much decimates all of humanity and vampires now rule the world. Here’s the book description:

You will kill. The only question is when.

In the dark days since the insidious Red Lung virus decimated the human population, vampires have risen to rule the crumbling cities and suburbs. Uncontested Princes hold sway over diminished ranks of humans: their “pets.” In exchange for their labor, loyalty and of course, their blood, these pets are registered, given food and shelter, permitted to survive.

Unregistered humans cling to fringes, scavenging for survival. Allison Sekemoto and her fellow Unregistereds are hunted, not only by vampires, but by rabids, the unholy result of Red Lung-infected vampires feeding on unwary humans. One night, Allie is attacked by a pack of rabids, saved by an unlikely hero…and turned vampire.

Uncomfortable in her undead skin, Allie falls in with a ragtag crew of humans seeking a cure, or cures: for Rabidism and for Vampirism. She’s passing for human…for now. But the hunger is growing and will not be denied. Not for friendship—not even for love.

I like the mix of sci-fi and horror that’s in the storyline making this quite different than the usual run of the mill vampire “romance” story that we’re used to. The project is in development and no screenwriter has yet been hired to adapt the novel but once ‘Blood of Eden’ moves forward, we’ll let you know.

So what are your thoughts? Do you think this could be the next ‘Twilight?’

the heroine is supposed to be half-Asian...I hope they don't whitewash her.

Ugh. No more vampires!
vickyblueeyez 26th-Apr-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
aww shit. Time to throw away the adult novel I was working on.
danne_gerous 26th-Apr-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
Are you really writing an adult vampire novel? If so, what's your angle?

harborafternoon 26th-Apr-2012 07:47 pm (UTC)
well... if they wanted to keep with the vampires, they should find a new spin.

For example, I could direct them Octavia Butler's Fledgling!

Okay now THIS sounds interesting. :0)
vickyblueeyez 26th-Apr-2012 06:20 pm (UTC)
I hope no one took out the book inserts I put in 50 Shades of Grey at my local bookstore yesterday warning people about the over priced crap of a twilight fanfic. :/ I'm on a mission.
violue 26th-Apr-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
that seems kind of awful
dazedpuckbunny 26th-Apr-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
Keep on it lol
violue 26th-Apr-2012 06:24 pm (UTC)
then again I guess it's not like she's some starving homeless writer that needs every penny she gets
vickyblueeyez 26th-Apr-2012 06:27 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't be as mad if it were GOOD fanfic. I have to deal with people that assume my writing is shit because it's fanfic. Everyone says all fic is bad and by 12 year olds. This insults my writing, me and all the good fic out there. Then this damned book came out and made it worse.
chuk_is_dazzled 26th-Apr-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
good

it's reminding me of that vamp movie with ethan hawke, daybreakers

midnight_lite 26th-Apr-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
My first thought too
vickyblueeyez 26th-Apr-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
I still want to see this movie. I really liked the concept. It was new to me. Never had a seen a vamp anything where they talked about vamps running out of their food source, humans.

How did the movie end? Did they turn on one another? Die out?
inboots 26th-Apr-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
no, there's a cure. if vampires expose themselves to the sun for a x amount of seconds, ending exposition right before they flame out, they turn back to human. the movie ends with hawke's character and buddies trying to get the word out while the world is collapsing.

there's a lot of hunger going on (some vamps had turned to feeding from their own blood, which lead to a disease and stuff) and rebellion and vamps turning on each other before the end.
wastedaudio 26th-Apr-2012 08:02 pm (UTC)
it was a good idea that was executed poorly, imo.
vervain 26th-Apr-2012 06:39 pm (UTC)
there are four books with this idea that have just been released or will be released by the way

harborafternoon 26th-Apr-2012 07:49 pm (UTC)
i enjoyed that movie!
de_throned 26th-Apr-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
I loved that movie
firecracker_sj 26th-Apr-2012 06:24 pm (UTC)
idk, this kinda sounds interesting. It kinda depend on if the story center more on the real cool conflict, or on the MC and her angst over not being able to bone a dude.
fruitchews 26th-Apr-2012 06:24 pm (UTC)
Rabidism? Rabids? Unregistereds? It's odd to say out loud.

In exchange for their labor, loyalty and of course, their blood, these pets are registered, given food and shelter, permitted to survive.

This sentence is a mess.
vickyblueeyez 26th-Apr-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
I tldr'd the whole thing. Is this any good? What's it about? Will it be a CW series so I can be lazy and not read a damned thing? It worth it?

AND WHY IS EVERYONE PICKING UP YOUNG ADULT? Older adults like shit too! I'm taking my 28 year old ass to my rocking chair. Get off my lawn.
actxappalledx 26th-Apr-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
ugh come on.

I don't want this.. but wtf ever happened to the Vampire Academy movie? I feel like they announced it forever ago and then I never heard anything again
myairguitar 26th-Apr-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
VA would be so much better as a tv show.
tobesurrounded 26th-Apr-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
yes ita. the CW should be all over that shit, not that other awful Selection "everyone tells me i'm pretty stop it" book or wtf it's called.
imnotasquirrel 26th-Apr-2012 06:41 pm (UTC)
it so would

the cw needs to get on that shit.
actxappalledx 26th-Apr-2012 06:42 pm (UTC)
IA, but I will take what I can get
notoriousreign 26th-Apr-2012 07:53 pm (UTC)
It's like that's NOBODY'S priority when those books are actually pretty fucking awesome okay. ><
imnotasquirrel 26th-Apr-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
this is what the author herself said:

* Selling film options means we now have a great production company (Preger Entertainment) and producer that can help make the book(s) into film. Me? I can't make a movie. My specialty is writing books. Theirs is making films happen, which is why we're lucky to have them on board.

* But, no film is being made yet. To do that, we need a lot of things: a script, a cast, and most importantly, a studio. Preger is currently pitching VA to studios, and when a studio picks it up, that's when all that other movie magic can happen. So, if you're hearing about filming taking place right now, it isn't true.
prdarkstar 26th-Apr-2012 06:27 pm (UTC)
She's half? I thought she was fully Asian, oops

I just read this. The first half was great, the second half was boring. I could have done without the romance too, they had no chemistry.
rubyboots 26th-Apr-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
I thought we were done with this phase?
lkool98 26th-Apr-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)

vervain 26th-Apr-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
most comments from people are directed towards their weight tbh.
pastelstar 26th-Apr-2012 08:34 pm (UTC)
LOL this again.
mirrorscrack 26th-Apr-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
I actually just spent the last week reading her books and they are pretty crap as far as the writing goes, but I found the plot interesting enough to keep my attention for 4 books and now I'm looking forward to the next one.

There is nothing wrong with reading YA books. They are light fluff and they are easy reads for my morning commute, lunch break, or gym time. I actually look for books like that so I have something easy to read in those situations.
myroomiswhite88 27th-Apr-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
omg where is this
