Michelle Pfeiffer: "People are always mispronouncing my name wrong"

Michelle Pfeiffer admits people often have trouble remembering her name.

The Batman Returns beauty says ever since she first went to school her name was read out wrong and she was often mistaken for a boy.

“People are always misspelling or mispronouncing my name,” says Michelle. “But it has always happened.

|I think it is just quite a mouthful for people. I was always Michale Perfeffer on the first day of school and in the end I would just answer to it.”

When I was little I thought it was "Puh-feiffer"...ONTDers, have you ever gotten your name mispronounced or misspelled?

my first name is frances and people always spell it "francis," even when they're fb chatting me or something and my name is right there.

but that's just the hand i've been dealt and i just deal with it now lol
ladysophiekitty 24th-Apr-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I know it's spelled Frances for girls because I loved The Little Princess growing up, and that was the name of the author.
sillyboho 24th-Apr-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
but francis is a boy's name! a girl is obvs frances.
zigzagzap 24th-Apr-2012 05:58 pm (UTC)
I love the name Frances.
starsxsonatas 24th-Apr-2012 06:00 pm (UTC)
thanks bb! i used to hate it when i was younger, but i feel like i've grown into it and i like it now.

plus i get all these fun nicknames out of it now. most people call me franny. some people call me frank haha
iamaunicorn 24th-Apr-2012 06:00 pm (UTC)
lmao ppl always misspell my name on fb too! i'm like ok, usually i don't care but really? you can't just scroll up half a screen to get it right?
solookup 24th-Apr-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
There's a Francis and Frances and another Francis (I think) at work. It's confusing!
wonderwomanhero 24th-Apr-2012 06:10 pm (UTC)
There's also Francois (fran-swah I think...)
celtic_thistle 24th-Apr-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
I work with a Frances! She goes by Franny. I think it's cute.
invisible_cunt 24th-Apr-2012 10:48 pm (UTC)
my first name is gillian
i HATE when i get a hard g

a lot of people repeat back to me 'julian' or 'julianne' whether it be in person or introducing myself
polaroidmoment 25th-Apr-2012 12:28 am (UTC)
That shit happens to me all the time. I have an extra N in my name where theres usually only one and I get irrationally angry when people misspell my name on fb, lol. One time my boyfriends MOM who has known me for three years spelled my name wrong ON MY BIRTHDAY on fb. I think it maY have been bc she was amd at me for some stupid thing. But still, how insulting.
fire_bad 25th-Apr-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
I know a lady whose first name is Francis and she marrieed a guy whose last name is Frances.

She lives in Wagga Wagga, Australia. I wish I was making this up.

story of my life.

my name is tara, pronounced "TAR-UH," not "TARE-UH."

GET IT RIGHT PEOPLE. :) that's why i don't spell it tera!
queenweasley 24th-Apr-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
Lol. I imagine it's because most people are used to hearing it pronounced as "Tare-uh." Do people tend to remember how to pronounce it after you've corrected them?
emerging 24th-Apr-2012 06:35 pm (UTC)
eh, 50/50.
ladysophiekitty 24th-Apr-2012 06:10 pm (UTC)
I'm actually used to the way you pronounce it so I have to think about it when it's pronounced the other way.
thetrustoryofme 24th-Apr-2012 06:54 pm (UTC)
i feel for you bb. mine is "sada". so not only have most people never seen it before, but they dont even have a 50/50 chance between two possible ways to pronounce it. :/

FYI its "say-da"
janacjb 24th-Apr-2012 07:23 pm (UTC)
Same. My name is Jana. Pronounced like Dana, which is a perfectly normal, regular, commonly used name. Everyone can say Dana right, but throw a J in there and all hell breaks loose.
trop_fort 24th-Apr-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
I had two friends and one pronounced it Tare-uh, the other Ta-ra, but both spelled it Tara. It was really hard to keep straight.
fontainebleau 25th-Apr-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
I'm a Mara (mar-ruh, not mare-uh) and people get it wrong 50% of the time. I expect it.
laceleather 25th-Apr-2012 09:12 pm (UTC)
same, i'm Alisa (A-lee-sa) and people always feel the need to say/spell Alyssa (A-lih-sa)
m_h_p 26th-Apr-2012 10:10 am (UTC)
Woo, fellow Tara :D
jamimo 24th-Apr-2012 05:50 pm (UTC)
same w/ my irl name but i'm used to it at this point tbh
sillyboho 24th-Apr-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
my last name is a guy's first name. a more popular last name is the same thing, but with an "s". guess which i get called all the time ever? reading comprehension!
twowaymirrrors 24th-Apr-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
I get called by my last name a lot. Like hi, there's a reason that comes second tyvm
sillyboho 24th-Apr-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
i have two boys and every single time i make them a doc appointment, school thing, etc they are getting called by the last name and it becomes this huge thing. my married last name is kind of a PITA. i didn't really like my maiden name either, so whatchta gon do?
elise_is_whoo 24th-Apr-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
my name is Elise but people always call me Elsie. It used to really bother me as a kid but now I don't really give a fuck and just answer to it anyways.
reunionfan 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
it's pronunced elle-eesse right?
elise_is_whoo 24th-Apr-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
Yes lol. I did have a friend growing up that would pronounce it E-Lease but that was better than elsie so I never corrected her.
xpirate_queenx 24th-Apr-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
Even after I tell people my name, 90% of the time, they immediately use one of its derivatives/permutations. Kinda like you, it used to bother me, but now I just smile and don't care.
mysticlady3 24th-Apr-2012 07:45 pm (UTC)
My sister's name is Elise :).
xpirate_queenx 24th-Apr-2012 06:21 pm (UTC)
...wouldn't mispronouncing something wrong mean pronouncing it correctly?

greyfilm 24th-Apr-2012 07:00 pm (UTC)
lol
attemptingpiano 24th-Apr-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
lol hmm ia
lonely_goatherd 25th-Apr-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
lol philosoraptor
x_noisekisses 24th-Apr-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
all the time. idk why it's so difficult for people to say daniella instead of danielle.

it's so annoying, i love my name. GET IT RIGHT.
greyfilm 24th-Apr-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
My mom has issues with that and it irritates the hell out of me. For example, calling people named Brianne 'Brianna'. My boyfriend has issues with 'Joanne' and 'Joanna' too. GET IT RIGHT!
familyjules 25th-Apr-2012 01:50 am (UTC)
My name is Julie and so many people call me Julia. That is not my name, thanks.
erstwhile_jab 26th-Apr-2012 01:53 pm (UTC)
my life story, essentially. they see 'Sylvie', they say 'Sylvia'. wtfness.
cheryb 24th-Apr-2012 05:51 pm (UTC)
my first and last name are 20 letters combined and the class list always cut off the end of my name, so i was constantly being called "Alexandr" instead of "Alexandra"

also my last name, which i'm not going to share, is mad long and apparently impossible to say for most people. during roll call i always knew when i was up because the teacher would legit stop and look at the list like "WTF" so i would be like "yeah, me... *insert correct pronunciation"
athees 24th-Apr-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
LOL are you me?

my last name is 17 letters long, and my first name was always cut down to to "At" it would always be so irritating to have to explain *every* time that my name was just being cut off... just take my word for it, and move on! gosh!
junemeaugust 24th-Apr-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)
There was a girl in my grade named Xochitl...she was always ready for the WTF moment when roll call.
celtic_thistle 24th-Apr-2012 07:10 pm (UTC)
I work with a lot of exit data and people have some awesome names--I remember putting in the notes box for data collection the proper pronunciation of that name. It's so pretty imo.

I've also run across some HORRID names here but that's a post for another day.
nene718 24th-Apr-2012 06:23 pm (UTC)
lol yes to the second part. And I was usually the first on the roll anyway.
greyfilm 24th-Apr-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
lol, my name isn't long but I would always know it was me by the pause, too. :P
neptune_melody 24th-Apr-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
Me too! My last name is 12 letters (and is crazy so no one can ever pronounce it ugh, i don't even bother correcting people anymore), so I would get called Stephen or Stefan when my first name is Steffani...idk they always thought I was a boy lol
speedychi 25th-Apr-2012 06:11 pm (UTC)
lol same with the second part
lcacbc 24th-Apr-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
People can't even say my second name. I can count on one hand the people that have gotten it right first time.
_thirty2flavors 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
lol no one can ever pronounce my first name the first time. I rarely bother correcting anyone.

Edited at 2012-04-24 05:53 pm (UTC)
onaan 24th-Apr-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
Lol no one pronounces my name right even after I correct them. /: It's the whole Westernization of foreign names thing going on tbh.
furor 24th-Apr-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
yup, i get this too
reunionfan 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
i'm nigerian. so my last name will forever be mispronounced
attemptingpiano 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
hey me too! where in nigeria are you from?
reunionfan 24th-Apr-2012 05:54 pm (UTC)

nene718 24th-Apr-2012 05:58 pm (UTC)

chuk_is_dazzled 25th-Apr-2012 09:09 pm (UTC)
same here, and its only 6 letters
sillycucumber 26th-Apr-2012 06:19 am (UTC)
My ex was from Nigeria. You should see the way people pronounced her first name, lol.

I forgot I had an old post open, but I don't really care.

misoras 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
lmao i can relate. my surname is 11 letters and 4 syllables. if you have a job that requires some level of reading ability. taking a minute to sound it out in your head is. not. hard. misspelling it doesn't bother me tho.

also my first name is one letter off the normal spelling. also, that being misspelt doesn't bother me.
queenweasley 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
My last name was mispronounced at my college graduation. We filled out little cards for the name announcer person to read in case our names were hard to pronounce (mine isn't), but she STILL said it wrong. I didn't feel too bad, though, because lots of other people had their names pronounced wrong. But the girl who walked right after me - her name is Hailly, but the announcer said, "Hillary" instead and the girl said (loud enough for me to hear and I was already across the stage, "EXCUSE me, it's HAILLY." Lmao.

My problem is more that people always misspell my name. My last name ends with "mann" and people ALWAYS forget the second "n." It's annoying as fuck.

ladysophiekitty 24th-Apr-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
Yeah, all the time. Both first and last! I get Sophia, Sofia, Sofie, Sofi, etc.

And people call me the wrong name all the time. I get Susie a lot too, and for some reason, Nicole.
corroded_tears 24th-Apr-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
My name is Dani... Or the case of any crowded Starbucks: Jenny. I mean, I know I'm quiet and that I mumble quite a bit but WTF!
janacjb 24th-Apr-2012 07:37 pm (UTC)
Hahaa, a friend of mine's name is Janet and once had a Starbuck cup labeled 'Jammet." I loled for aaaaages.
mondengel 24th-Apr-2012 07:47 pm (UTC)
Tonight, Domino's mistook my name (Alexx) for Alice. That's never happened to me before.
