“The Avengers” star and “Captain America” actor Chris Evans recently shared his support for marriage equality in a recent “Playboy” interview. His brother, Sean Evans, is gay and the interview allowed Chris to express his disgust with the current laws prohibiting gay men and women from participating in state-recongized marriage.
In the interview, Evans says, “Are you kidding me? It’s insane that civil rights are being denied people in this day and age. It’s embarrassing, and it’s heartbreaking. It goes without saying that I’m completely in support of gay (same-sex?) marriage. In 10 years we’ll be ashamed that this was an issue.”
39 states in America don’t allow same-sex marriage, and Evans thinks the blatant disregard for civil rights is something that we, as a nation, will regret in the future. The passing of the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act publicly outlawed same-sex marriage, and Evans isn’t the only big-time actor to disagree with what the federal government has decided.
Other actors with the “tough guy” image are also in support of marriage equality, including Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, and Colin Farrell. As Evans says, the denial of civil rights to anyone in this country isn’t just embarrassing, it’s wrong.
