Dr. Phil: Vets with PTSD are "damaged goods", "monsters"

PTSD: civilians just love to paint veterans as riddled with this disease, causing them to become violent, unhinged lunatics who will explode at the slightest provocation. Look at just about any news story where a violent crime is committed by a veteran, and PTSD is almost immediately floated as the reason. In the media narrative, violence and PTSD go hand-in-hand. At the same time, troops are criticized for not coming forward and admitting they have a problem, and seeking help for it. (Gee, could it possibly be because we paint veterans with PTSD as homicidal lunatics?)

Dr. Phil, arguably one of the most popular talk show hosts on the planet, decided to feature this issue on his show this week. And while he could have taken a reasonable approach, he went straight for the gut instead. Titling the show “From Heroes To Monsters”, he painted a picture of vets with PTSD as ticking time bombs of violence, describing them as damaged goods who “destroy families” and “dismantle marriages”.

This asshat really needs to stop. Calling your segment 'Heroes to Monsters' is disgusting and unfair to these service members who didn't ask to come back home with these issues. Instead of calling them monsters, get them help.

so fucking stupid
blocaholic 20th-Apr-2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
In what universe is this man a doctor?!
elvenqueen86 20th-Apr-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
He's not, and hasn't been for a long time. IIRC he lost his license for sleeping with a patient or something.
joliebelle 21st-Apr-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
he's still a doctor because he earned his degree. however, he is an unlicensed psychologist.

From what I remember in ethics class, he was brought up on ethics charges, and refused the state boards ideas to close his case, so his license was surrendered.

i believe my dogs got a mild case of PTSD. and she's lovely. fuck this asshole
kayleigh013 20th-Apr-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
He needs to shut the fuck up now. How about he get his fat ass over there and watch 5 of his own men blown up before his eyes by a fucking suicide bomber. Piece of shit.
likeomgitsalice 20th-Apr-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
He a true piece of shit. As someone with this problem, but not war/military related, I can laugh at how stupid he sounds and know he is completely wrong. I can't help but think how many people who watch his show will end up believing ptsd = monster/damaged goods just because he said so without doing any further reading.
danne_gerous 20th-Apr-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
IA. I also have PTSD and I find this attitude repulsive. From this dickhead to the media portrayals in film and on tv of PTSD to people dismissing you if you have PTSD but are non-military, the misinformation is exhausting.
cynical_terror 21st-Apr-2012 10:29 pm (UTC)
I have PTSD, too, and this guy is a complete idiot.
little_kitkat 20th-Apr-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
I hate this assclown.

I have PTSD. Most of us do not go on unhinged, violent rages. Of course, he won't represent this fact. He's only out there for ratings.
bostongirl2003 20th-Apr-2012 11:23 pm (UTC)
Honestly, I think more people with PTSD are likely to withdraw because of their symptoms, not rage against people. The soldiers coming home and snapping violently are the ones that were given God knows what medications/vaccinations/exposure to shit overseas.
d00ditsemily 20th-Apr-2012 11:25 pm (UTC)
All soldiers get the same vax for the most part unless they have an allergy. I don't know if they really go around giving pills out. They don't really have doctors, plus meds and guns don't usually mix. It's just all so messed up and the whole system needs to be reevaluated.
crystalzelda 20th-Apr-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
What the actual fuck.

To the OP, thank you for posting his address. Can we all let him know how we feel? Thank you

is anyone surprised at this moustached hack?
xtinkerbellax Re: another reason to hate Oprah20th-Apr-2012 10:36 pm (UTC)
lol I always feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like Oprah.
hearxmexrawr 20th-Apr-2012 10:07 pm (UTC)
civilians get PTSD, too. In fact, anyone can get it — anyone who has been through a trauma.

So glad this was pointed out! I always feel like shit because people constantly question my ptsd, because I've never ~been to war~. In the end it's just me being dramatic, not suffering from a real mental illness.
little_kitkat 20th-Apr-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
Thank you! I was diagnosed last year. 12 years after watching my mom die. I was put into question too, especially since people always say: "But you didn't go to war." or this gem: "Wasn't that a long time ago?"
danne_gerous 20th-Apr-2012 10:12 pm (UTC)
I know exactly what you mean. It's exhausting.
sillyboho 20th-Apr-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
i have it, and it was not from being in war either.
shegotaflavor 21st-Apr-2012 02:17 am (UTC)
I also have it from seeing a close loved one die in front of me in a very chaotic and dramatic way. It will get set off with certain things like loud bangs and screaming but I don't go into violent rages because of it
lefaineant 21st-Apr-2012 05:33 am (UTC)
Those people are not educated about it and I somewhat blame it on the media for that.
demonsandsongs 20th-Apr-2012 10:07 pm (UTC)
Giving this douchewaffle a show one of the few things I side-eye Oprah for.

no fucking thank you

This gif manages to express my feelings on Dr. Phil so well and is also adorable.

omg Figaro <3
sassalicious 20th-Apr-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
Rude. People might not have such probs with PTSD if they were able to get proper treatment and assistance.
viakyusu 20th-Apr-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
Wow...WOW
pushpoplove 20th-Apr-2012 10:11 pm (UTC)
Don't even get me started. My dad and husband both have PTSD and they sure as fuck aren't monsters or damaged goods.
