What does it take to make great opening credits?

A good opening credits sequence is like icing on the cake for a film or TV show. Certain directors have made them a signature part of their work (e.g. David Fincher), as have certain networks (like Showtime).

PBS' Off Book has just posted an interesting video about the creators of memorable credits, including the folks who made Mad Men's opening as well as the person responsible for Zombieland's clever credits.

Check it out:

To dig a little deeper, you may want to poke around on Imaginary Forces' website. This company has made tons of memorable sequences, from Minority Report to Boardwalk Empire to that Marvel clip that plays before all the superhero movies. (The site is chock full of video, in case you can't recall them all.)
