'First Winter' Deer Killing: Indie Film Under Fire For Controversial Shooting

From the files of "no publicity is bad publicity," comes word about a growing controversy surrounding the indie thriller "First Winter."

The film, which is set to debut at the Tribeca Film Festival, focuses on a group of Brooklyn hipsters who head to the country for some relaxation and get pushed to their limits when an apocalyptic event leaves them cut off from society -- if there's any society left. The group must contend with the frigid elements and their growing hunger -- the latter of which is no longer an issue after they hunt and kill a deer. The problem? The filmmakers actually killed two deer, and that could get them in trouble with New York State environmental authorities.

"We are idiots. We didn't know how to do this [hunting] stuff," director Ben Dickson told Manhattan-based site DNAinfo.com. "There were so many deer weak from the winter and getting eaten by local dogs we didn't even think about it."

One of Dickson's actors, Paul Manza, pulled the trigger during the hunt, which led to the deaths. According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, all hunters need a permit, which can only be acquired after completing an extensive class.

A hunter education course is required for persons who cannot show proof that they have ever possessed a hunting license. The general course is a minimum 10 hours in length. DEC honors hunter education certificates and sporting licenses from all other states and countries.
The DEC is looking into the matter, per DNAinfo.com. It is unclear whether Manza had a pass.

As for Dickson, in an interview with the Tribeca Film Festival, he allowed that the deer killing could have been faked.

"[I]n the end, I was convinced that it had to be authentic, and I was prepared to change the story if need be," he said. "I would recommend dressing an animal to anyone, especially if you eat meat or wear leather; it changes your perspective."

"First Winter" debuts at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19. For more on the controversy, including what kind of fine the filmmakers could face if the DEC finds they were in the wrong, head over to DNAinfo.com.

IA.

There's nothing defensible about this shooting (and I say that as someone who eats meat) BUT fuck those 'animals >>> people' types tbh.
extremisttt 18th-Apr-2012 06:46 pm (UTC)
present!

I'm not even sure why. I just always seem to have more sympathy for animals, children, and the handicapped than adult humans who fuck everything up.

It's the defenseless thing. *shrug*

People seem to be missing the point about this issue. It's not about the deer, but it is about serious safety violations on set and endangering the lives of actors and crew.
silentxstrom 18th-Apr-2012 06:24 pm (UTC)
there's zero excuse for that.

Probably depends on where you are when it happens
kreayshawn Re: theres been an apocalypse and you are starving18th-Apr-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
obviously? its about making conscious choices under your circumstances, not starving

Not acceptable
boomstick 18th-Apr-2012 06:29 pm (UTC)
Wow. That's just dangerous and stupid. There's a reason why hunters have to take a class...there's more to think about that "point, shoot".

tbh if there were so many dead deer lying around I don't see why they didn't just grab a carcass and fake it.
ewacat 18th-Apr-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
Love a good apocalyptic event.

Poor deer though, that's obviously crap of the filmmakers. And a crap excuse too.
theantipoet 18th-Apr-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
deers? really?

who cares... in most areas across the country, deer overpopulation is a huge problem and killing them outright is merciful compared to making them starve to death over the winter because humans have already killed off their natural predators.
hoot 18th-Apr-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
I agree with you that deer hunting serves a purpose (plus it's more human and environmentally friendly than buying meat from a grocery store). Hunting without a permit when it's not hunting season though is stupid and dangerous.
of_silver 18th-Apr-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
ia, deer are a nightmare where I live. They dgaf and just run all over the road, on people's decks, etc. The hunting laws here are really restrictive and there's no way to control the population.
xtinkerbellax 18th-Apr-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
Well where are they supposed to go? Most places just keep developing and driving animals out of their homes so there is no land for them to live on.
wits 18th-Apr-2012 07:18 pm (UTC)
yeah we have controlled hunts to take care of it though
kreayshawn 18th-Apr-2012 06:33 pm (UTC)
ew non-vegan hipsters
why bother rly
allisondawn 18th-Apr-2012 06:34 pm (UTC)
tbh idgaf (and i am a major animal loving dweeb) so long as they used the carcasses afterwards. what i do gaf about though is that they were dense enough to do it without a permit or any knowledge of any of the legalities or the potential dangers.

mte. the idea of someone just waltzing into the woods with a gun and no training whatsoever is awful - shit goes wrong even when people are trained

SO MUCH HUBRIS
zeldafitzgerald 18th-Apr-2012 06:35 pm (UTC)
Did they really not think they'd need a permit? Who doesn't know about hunting permits? I've never hunted before in my life and didn't grow up in a particularly rural area and even I know about permits.

This sounds like a case of the morons: they were too cheap/lazy to get the permit and they thought they wouldn't get caught (even though they were planning on people seeing this movie at some point).
killmyunicorn 18th-Apr-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)
yeah I grew up in NY and it was common knowledge you needed a permit or whatever. You can't just shoot a deer because you feel like it.
sailormoonie 19th-Apr-2012 08:07 am (UTC)
