these comments...i honestly wouldntve known it was a "bad word" if i didnt come on ontd. like, even if youre referring to transexuals you cant call them trannies? whats wrong with that? not that ive ever used that word, or plan to

in related news, i find it weird that i hate the [gay slur] f-word and judge people that use it, yet i say nigga all the time. nigga this, nigga that, everyones a nigga *shrug*
it would makes sense if i were gay or something, but nope!

well the word is usually used as an insult/slur towards transgendered ppl, and when it's not, it's usually used to describe someone who looks like a hot mess. so yeah i get why trans ppl wouldn't want to be associated w/ that word. some of them don't find it offensive, but it's probably best if cisgendered people don't use the word.

I've brought it up here before. The word tranny originates in Australia, where shortened words get -y or -ie added to the end (barbie, mossie, etc). It originated in the drag queen community there. It didn't start out as a bad word, just a shortened version of transvestite. I know a transgendered person that uses it and doesn't consider it negative at all, though she has mentioned before it isn't necessarily meant to refer to transgendered people as much as it is for transvestites.

For me, I've never been called a "tranny", personally. But whenever the word comes up, it makes my hair stand on end because it feels like a person is trivializing the community like trans* people are novelties. I know other trans* identified people who use the word to describe themselves, and re-appropriation and all that, but it makes me uncomfortable every single time.

The term "hot tranny mess" could make me rage for days. As if trans* women as a people are just sloppy imitations of "natural born" womenfolk. It's just a hurtful stereotype to continue promoting...

Never understood the negativity with that word "Tranny". I think it sounds cute, kinda like granny. "Shemale" however sounds a bit revolting.

Anyone care to inform me why the word "Tranny" is a bad word to use, isn't it a shortend version of transgender or transsexual? (can't remember which).

And also who decides that the word "Tranny" shouldn't be used, has there been a vote among the transgender community or what.

As a gay man, I was under the impression that tranny was just a shortened word for the trans community. It wasn't until I saw the backlash against Christian Siriano that I realized it was derogatory.

I guess it has to do with intent. I don't think Chloe Sevigny is running down the street calling people "trannies." She's been an ally for quite some time and I think to punish her for pointing out the over-PCification of our culture is just wrong.

IDK i haven't slept in a day.

Intent isn't magical though. Just because you didn't mean to hurt someone doesn't mean you didn't, and doesn't take away from the fact that it's a derogatory term to a lot of the people in the trans* community.

And pls, not with the over-PCification argument again. It's about respect, not being ~~~puliticully currect~~~.

i hate the term "politically correct" so much
like, i didn't cut these words out of my vocabulary because i want to look good and win popularity votes, i did it because i have friends and family who are hurt by them and if there's a way i can make their lives a little easier, i'll do it. it comes at no cost to me so why wouldn't i?
it's nothing to do with politics. it's a genuine desire to be a decent person and make the world better for others.

i have many gay co-workers that cross-dress often outside of work, and they use the term "tranny" constantly, so i never knew it was a "bad" word to use until lately due to all the ONTD posts. :|

but I don't get some people's devotion to this word. It's just a word that really doesn't mean anything to me one way or the other. If it's hurting someone when I say it, I can just...not say it. It makes little difference to me, but if it makes someone else have a better time of it, nbd to not say it, you know?

Intent doesn't matter. When will people learn this? Even if you're not a racist, and you say something racist without knowing it - it's STILL racist. And if it hurts someone apologize and move on.
