Jack Gleeson swaps 'Game of Thrones' for seat of learning

HE plays a leading role in the hit series 'Game of Thrones' but yesterday actor Jack Gleeson was made a scholar at Trinity College.

The second-year student -- who's studying philosophy and theology -- was among 103 new scholars awarded the coveted accolade yesterday.

The 19-year-old plays the easy-to-despise boy king, Joffrey Baratheon, in the medieval drama which is causing waves on both sides of the Atlantic. But despite his global fame, Mr Gleeson may abandon acting for a more academic route. He previously said: "After 'Game Of Thrones' I'd be happy to do some amateur plays but I don't think I want to do any more professional acting.

"I'd like to be an academic, a philosophy lecturer if possible. I'd do a Masters in Ancient Hebrew maybe, and a PhD hopefully, if I get in."

The Cork native added: "The thing about that level of acting is that it is very financially rewarding but for me it is a balancing act.

"I'm happy to sacrifice a big pay cheque for my happiness, if that's not too corny a thing to say. It's probably more naive than mature to say that, maybe, but that's how I feel."

Scholars are students who have demonstrated exceptional knowledge and understanding of their subjects. They are elected annually in various subjects as the result of an exam held in the week before the start of the second term. To become a member of the exclusive Trinity Scholars' club, Mr Gleeson undertook the series of gruelling exams covering a varied mix of topics separate to the academic curriculum.

In recognition of his accolade, he and the other scholars are now entitled to a seat around the dinner table in the Dining Hall at Trinity College. He is also entitled to free accommodation on the campus.

I still can't believe he's practically the same age as me... I get a scholarship as well, but it's money rather than free accommodation, and my accommodation costs more than my scholarship, so I guess I'd prefer that lol.

semi-ot, but I just took my first open-book exam this afternoon. HOLY SHIT this is easy. And all my finals are open book. AWWW YEEEAAAAH~

I know I'm late replying to this but Irish Unis are basically free and the way their economy is, I reckon that is pretty pricey which is why it works that way.

Open-book tests are the BEST. We had those for my Media and Pop Culture course (online tests too!) and even though they were timed, they were super fucking easy. It's basically free marks. Of course, if you have to write an essay and it's open-book, profs tend to mark you a lot more harshly, so idk it can go either way.

I thought he was 12.
I used to want to be an academic but that path is so not for me.

WTF is ancient Hebrew? Isn't Hebrew just...Hebrew?
it_llbeyourname 17th-Apr-2012 06:58 pm (UTC)
ancient hebrew is what you would find in ancient scripts like the torah. modern hebrew is what they speak in israel today. they are very different, think about ancient greek texts and modern greek as it would be spoken today in greece, or even old english and modern english....very very different

I'd do a Masters in Ancient Hebrew maybe, and a PhD hopefully, if I get in

That's impressive. I wish him success.

My exams are in 4 weeks and I haven't started studying yet. I just can't get motivated, AT ALL. Any tips?

How long before exams do you guys start studying?
wheezy_wazlib 17th-Apr-2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
I will study this weekend (hopefully) for my final next Friday.
theciz 17th-Apr-2012 04:24 pm (UTC)
Usually the day before/morning of, except maths papers when I started a week before because, you know, maths is hard yo.

But I'm a bad/lazy student, so probably don't take my advice lol
hireaunicorn 17th-Apr-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
4 weeks too. I haven't started revising yet and I REALLY need to. Ngl, seeing celebs (that I like) achieving things like this inspires me to work harder lol /sad
orlandabloom 17th-Apr-2012 07:51 pm (UTC)
it's the same for me. i have an essay due in exam week the same time so this is my first priority. but idk idk, i am dedicating like 90% of my free periods in between classes to revision now and im gonna spend more evenings at the library i think (i tell myself i'll go home and study but it never happens)... but despite this i know i will spend the week before exams cramming for half of my classes lol.
milkradio 18th-Apr-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
lol like a day or two but i was a bad student so i recommend at least 2 weeks in advance :|

when i did the IB, it was weeks in advance usually, but in university, i was like "lol nope" to preparing ahead of time because there was SO MUCH and i didn't know where to begin/didn't give a shit anymore
podgie 17th-Apr-2012 04:23 pm (UTC)
I'm studying for my structures of farm animals exam right now and it sucks. But then I just have stats tomorrow night and I'm done! /csb
