I have a friend whose actual legal first name is Thor and he highly recommended it but I wasn't sure if he was biased and he was my only friend who saw it.
Yeah, you should probably watch Thor before you go see The Avengers. They've said that they made sure you could see this without having seen any of the Marvel films, but it looks like the plot is built mostly on top of what happened in Thor.
