Supremely talented being to play iconic role in an American masterpiece

Wish Fulfilled: Donna Murphy Is the Witch for Shakespeare in the Park Into the Woods

Two-time Tony Award winner Donna Murphy will cast a spell as the Witch in the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park revival of Into the Woods this summer. The role of the wise but crooked-fingered Witch was created in the original 1987 Broadway production by Tony winner Bernadette Peters and played in the musical's revival by Vanessa Williams.

Murphy earned a Tony Award for originating the role of the obsessively lovelorn Fosca in the 1994 Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Passion. The writers previously collaborated on Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park With George.

Murphy joins a cast that includes Amy Adams (The Baker's Wife), Jack Broderick (Narrator), Gideon Glick (Jack), Cooper Grodin (Rapunzel's Prince), Ivan Hernandez (Cinderella's Prince/Wolf), Tina Johnson (Granny), Josh Lamon (Steward), Jessie Mueller (Cinderella), Laura Shoop (Cinderella's Mother) and Tess Soltau (Rapunzel).

Casting for the roles of The Baker, Little Red and the Mysterious Man remain to be announced.
The outdoor summer production of the 1987 musical by Sondheim (music and lyrics) and Lapine (book) runs July 23-Aug. 25. Opening night is Aug. 9.

The 2012 Shakespeare in the Park summer production of Into the Woods is based on the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre London Production, produced by Timothy Sheader and William Village for Regent's Park Theatre Ltd.

Into the Woods — a musical conflation of fairytale characters and stories, with a few original characters (including The Baker and The Baker's Wife) sprinkled among them — is directed by Timothy Sheader with co-direction by Liam Steel, recreating work previously seen in an outdoor staging in London.

Into the Woods features scenic design by John Lee Beatty and Soutra Gilmour; costume design by Emily Rebholz; movement direction by Liam Steel; sound design by Acme Sound Partners; orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick; and musical direction by Paul Gemignani.

Here's how The Public characterizes Into the Woods: "In Into the Woods, a witch's curse condemns the Baker and his Wife to a life without children. They embark on a quest to find the four items required to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. Will they succeed? And what happens after 'happily ever after?' A Tony Award-winning masterpiece by musical theatre giants Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, Into the Woods is a witty and irreverent reimagining of beloved classic fairytales: Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Cinderella."

Tickets to Shakespeare in the Park are free and are distributed, two per person, at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park the day of the show. The Public Theater will again offer free tickets through its Virtual Ticketing lottery at www.shakespeareinthepark.org on the day of the show.

The Delacorte Theater in Central Park is accessible by entering at 81st Street and Central Park West or at 79th Street and Fifth Avenue.

Also playing as part of NYSF's 50th season of free productions at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park this summer is Shakespeare's As You Like It, June 5-30. Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan directs a cast that includes Robert Joy (Le Beau, Lord), Oliver Platt (Touchstone), MacIntyre Dixon (Adam), David Furr (Orlando), Renee Elise Goldsberry (Celia), Omar Metwally (Oliver), Lily Rabe (Rosalind) and Stephen Spinella (Jaques).

Grammy and Emmy winning actor/comedian/musician and bestselling author Steve Martin will compose original music for As You Like It. "Sullivan will set the play's famous Forest of Arden in the rural American South, circa 1840, where folk and roots music perfectly capture the mood of the time," according to The Public.

Donna Murphy is a living goddess. For you uncultured folk out there, she was the voice of Mother Gothel in Tangled, so she's already done the witch thing awesomely. I'm still not fully on board with Amy Adams as The Baker's Wife (she's much more of a Cinderella, albeit too old for the role now), but Donna Murphy as The Witch is on point. Excuse me while I gather my things to start camping out at the Delacorte right now, because with Amy Adams drawing in the celebrity seekers and Donna Murphy drawing in the theatre goers, getting tickets for this will be IMPOSSIBLE.

Also, please bow down to Donna Murphy's amazingness.

Bernadette Peters will always be the Witch for me, but Donna Murphy is a flawfree and talented goddess so I'm happy.

I love Bernadette Peters' performance and Vanessa Williams' too. They're different but I like them both in the role.

I saw the revival but was too little to see the original cast (though I used to watch the PBS recording a lot). I just love this musical so much.

I wonder what she thinks of the fame given to Gothiel

My friend Michele is her personal assistant. I didn't know she was ONTD-worthy, but she is very talented.

I'm envious of your friend. Donna Murphy is just so stupidly talented. The first time I watched her Sondheim: The Birthday Concert performance, I just sat there with my mouth wide open. SHE is my ultimate Broadway diva, screw Bernie and Pattie and Sutton.
duckduckcaboose 11th-Apr-2012 09:56 pm (UTC)
I had never heard of her until I met Michele a few years ago. At that time, Michele wasn't her PA but they were like family friends or something. Then she did an internship with her and after graduation she got the PA job. I used to text Michele every time I saw Donna on a re-run of Law & Order, lol.

Donna isn't an actress that I IMDb often (despite the fact that she's one of my favorites), so whenever she pops up in movies or TV, I get very excited. Like, I had never seen Center Stage before, so a few months ago my roommate and I watched it on Netflix, and when Donna walked into the ballet studio, I freaked out. I love her. That said, I'm always really disappointed when she doesn't sing. She should just sing in everything.

I love Sutton, but she does not belong in the rank of bway divas tbqh.
simplychristina 11th-Apr-2012 09:48 pm (UTC)
Oh wow, I love this casting.

Can this please finally be the year I win tickets on the virtual line, Public Theater?
anabanana0714 11th-Apr-2012 09:52 pm (UTC)
I always win virtual line tickets, but this might have to be the year I finally camp out because there is absolutely no way I'm going to risk not seeing this.

Also, if you go to the window for standby tickets, every now and then, someone will fail to pick up their virtual line tickets. That was how I picked up extra tickets for The Winter's Tale.

simplychristina 11th-Apr-2012 09:58 pm (UTC)
For some reason, I have no luck with the virtual line. I seriously hope I win or I will have to camp at some point. This is one of my favorite musicals ever and Sondheim is my all-time favorite in general. Now Donna Murphy! I like Amy too but the role....eh. Still.

PERFECTION.

I saw the header in my email & assumed it was sarcastic, so I'm very pleasantly surprised.
miriamele 11th-Apr-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
YES YES YES She is PERFECTION. She is SUCH an amazing choice for The Witch (though obvs Ms. Peters will always be the best). OMG and I LOVED her as Mother Gothel.

I'm kinda in heaven right now.
mellarks 11th-Apr-2012 09:56 pm (UTC)
OMG ewioreporieipoewewiojew

She is a QUEEN. Passion is my shit and Center Stage will forever be flawless.
greenfairy_87 11th-Apr-2012 10:00 pm (UTC)
Between her and Amy Adams there is so much Disney perfection here I totally envy New Yorkers.

I only knew her as Picard's girlfriend in Insurrection and as wife of Doc Ock.
crystalfairie 11th-Apr-2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
She was also in Centre Stage, wasn't she?
firedawn 11th-Apr-2012 10:27 pm (UTC)
I would be very happy if she could be the movie Witch too.
anabanana0714 11th-Apr-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
That would be amazing, but you know she won't be. They're going to get some "star" name who can't sing worth a damn. On Twitter, someone actually replied to The Public Theater that they were disappointed because they had heard a rumor that Meryl Streep was in talks for the roles. I was like, are you kidding me? This is better! Meryl is great, but she cannot sing! Donna Murphy is perfect!

This musical is nothing without a good witch! It's really frustrating.
ascot_gavotte 12th-Apr-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
also Meryl isn't young enough. tbh I can't think of anyone who could pull it off.
