For the upcoming soundtrack to Everardo Valerio Gout’s Days of Grace, Scarlett Johansson has recorded a cover of Billie Holiday’s 1936 hit (originally from the classic 1935 Gershwin “American folk opera” Porgy and Bess), “Summertime” with Massive Attack’s 3D and LCD Soundsystem & DFA’s Tim Goldsworthy.
It’s all Earth-swallowing cinematic, atmospheric drones; the stuff that, for some reason, is perfect for brooding Ryan Gosling-esque midnight driving. Scarlett Johansson’s vocals, not unlike Beach House’s Victoria Legrand’s, are right at home here, among the howling guitars and expansive planes of sandstorm synth, though they hardly play a starring role.
