Did Chelsey Clinton convert? I heard repeatedly that she did before she got married, but the internet is telling me she had a Methodist preacher there.
flaca 9th-Apr-2012 10:47 am (UTC)
she converted but had a priest from her family's church there or something, idt he officiated.
dothefrug 9th-Apr-2012 05:33 am (UTC)
When did Craig David age 25 years?
roseofjuly 9th-Apr-2012 05:42 am (UTC)
According to most of the Jewish people I know, Jewish lineage only passes through the matrilineal line so Lauren London, Lenny Kravitz and Tracee Ellis Ross wouldn't be considered Jewish.* Neither would Craig David, simply because his grandparents were Jewish.

*I'm not personally saying that they are not, just what I have observed.

The "only matrilineal Judaism counts" thing is such bullshit and I have never encountered a Jew who actually still thinks so archaically and I'm really fed up with how many people are parroting it in this post. That practice was derived from the idea that that was the only way to be 100% sure the kids in question were ethnically Jewish because all women are obviously harlots, but I think as a culture we're past that, so please let's not.
wauwy 9th-Apr-2012 09:32 am (UTC)
idk, most of my conservative Jewish friends consider it the "official" yardstick, but you're right that all of them go "but personally, I think you're Jewish if you have it in your family and identify that way"
ninjacandy 9th-Apr-2012 10:16 am (UTC)
really? there was a huge debate in england over the fact that a jewish boy whose mother was religiously jewish but not ethnically jewish was not accepted in to the school on those grounds.
myrana 9th-Apr-2012 12:28 pm (UTC)
tbh I think it it's actually still a pretty common belief, but I guess it depends where you are in the world - here in the UK all of my Jewish friends agree that it has to be matrilineal, but possibly that's because the community here is generally more orthodox, idk.
roseofjuly 9th-Apr-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
Like I said...according to most of the Jewish people I know. I once got into an argument with someone because I said probably the majority of people who consider themselves half Jewish don't feel that way, since Judaism is an ethnicity and culture and not just a religion, and I was told to let Jews define Judaism tyvm. I'm not just "parroting" it because I don't subscribe to that belief; I just brought it up.
bent_ley 9th-Apr-2012 04:28 pm (UTC)
just a question-have you ever interacted with jews that arent reform?
wauwy 9th-Apr-2012 09:29 am (UTC)
Most ~Jewish officials~ don't consider you "officially Jewish" if your mom wasn't Jewish, but they usually recognize you have Jewish ancestry. Plus, "Jewishness" is an ethnicity, too, so there's that to consider.
