Gabrielle Union Explains Why She Took the High Road Despite Being Called A Home-Wrecker

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Gabrielle Union is having a pretty good year. The actress is not only gearing up for the release of her new film Think Like A Man, but she’s also snagged a starring role in the upcoming BET show written by Mara Brock-Akil titled Single Black Female.

But everything hasn’t always been so easy-breezy for Gabby. After it was revealed that she and NBA superstar Dwayne Wade were an item, many called her a home-wrecker, and she was even sued by Wade’s ex-wife for being the other woman and allegedly being a bad influence on Wade’s children (the suit was dismissed).

Through it all, Union kept her mouth shut, and refused to talk about the rumors. According to Gabby, many saw this as an admission of guilt, but for her, she had one reason to stay mum: Wade’s kids.

On why she didn’t publicly defend her reputation against rumors she cheated with Dwyane while he was married

“The kids. For the people that hire me, it’s a non issue. But at the end of the day, Dwyane’s kids are going to be the ones who really suffer. They’re 10 and 4 and a half. They’re old enough to understand the mean things that strangers can say.”

On feeling bullied by her fans who believed she was “the other woman”

“I think people mistook me taking the high road as an admission of guilt. Dwyane and I made a decision very early to not react to the negativity. And I kept feeling like the truth would come out. The problem is, when it did, nobody cared. What I discovered on social media is that people don’t read the entire story.”

On handling Siohvaughn’s lawsuits alleging Gabby as a homewrecker and detrimental to her kids

“I fought it. My life is just too easy to track. So, we were submitting plenty of proof for the times she said I was in Miami. So, it was like, obviously you’re not telling the truth. And then the courts dismissed the case.”

On her current relationship with Siovaughn

“I’ve never had one. I wasn’t involved then-because I wasn’t involved with their marriage–and I don’t have one now.”

On contemplating breaking up with Dwyane because of the divorce turmoil

I did a lot of talking with girlfriends and sorting through my feelings about the madness. This kind of love is a gift. It’s so consistent. There's no way that I would trade it for people who refuse to simply acknowledge the truth.

I can't believe people don't see anything wrong with sending this to someone they do not know personally.

I loathe the way Dwyane and Siohvaughn spell their names. Ugh.
And lol @ "high road". Okkkkk.
myblackass 7th-Apr-2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
If she spelled it 'Siobhan' most people would probably mispronounce it.
baileysmama01 7th-Apr-2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
Siobhan is the traditional Irish spelling. I agree on "Dwyane" though. I don't get that.
vonlisbon 7th-Apr-2012 05:02 pm (UTC)
D-why-ane is how it looks like it sounds. Guh.
pistol_eyes 7th-Apr-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
That first tweet is just gross. What kind of 1950s thinking is that?
maidenhell 7th-Apr-2012 04:25 pm (UTC)
It's more common than you think (at least in my experience). I'm 32, no kids, and I get comments at times.
creative_candy 7th-Apr-2012 04:58 pm (UTC)
i feel your pain..i just hit 30 and almost every one is jumping at me and telling me i am not getting any younger and i should settle down etc etc...i always tell them to fuck off and mind their business..i am not the family type..get over it :P
bettalaylow 7th-Apr-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
Me too and I'm 30
flshphotography 7th-Apr-2012 05:27 pm (UTC)
so rude..
deadtree 7th-Apr-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
yep, I get it when people find out I'm 27 (when, immediately before I tell them my age, they assume I'm a teenager).
vexed_artist 7th-Apr-2012 05:43 pm (UTC)
It is stupidly common. I've been getting comments like that since I was 19. I'm 27 now, and people (most of whom don't know me from Eve) still give me the tired old "Oh, you'll change your mind! You just need to grow up a little!" response when I tell them that I don't want kids.

If only I could punch people over the Internet...
menorahmajora 7th-Apr-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
I'm 25 and people have been asking me why I'm not married yet. It's doing *wonders* for my self-esteem(I really want to get married and as it is I'm feeling defective because I'm nowhere near that milestone)
whitewatergirl 8th-Apr-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
I'm 34 but most people mistake me for 22, so luckily I don't get that crap often, but I do occasionally and it's so annoying. Someone made a joke once about me becoming "accidentally pregnant" and I said it was impossible. They argued with me. Um, I'm a lesbian, so no, it really isn't possible, but thanks for playing!
demented_21 7th-Apr-2012 03:58 pm (UTC)
lol irl at "Mom?".
childish 7th-Apr-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
lol @ the "Mom?" comment. That's the only way to respond to such bullshit, though I'm lucky in that my mom dgaf. She loves us and if we weren't ready/interested in having kids she'd support us.

Also legit question, why can't white people tell how old black people are? I'm basing this on the second tweet and my own experiences.

bee_xx3 7th-Apr-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
~black don't crack~
yalingster 7th-Apr-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
idek age is kind of hard imo
enid_keaner 7th-Apr-2012 04:02 pm (UTC)
Age in general is hard to guess.

Also, we black people tend to age well. I'm 25 and I have had people ask me when I'll be graduating high school.

I like to think of our aging genes as compensation for the shit we've been put through.
childish 7th-Apr-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
Maybe it's not that we age well, maybe everyone else just ages poorly.
coutureable 7th-Apr-2012 09:50 pm (UTC)
You have natural melanin to help you combat the sun damage while us whities do not. That is why you age well. Although, it depends on the person. We are Italian and my mom looks really good for her age.
secretivexhero 8th-Apr-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
I'm not black (I'm "white" but iberian white) and people think I'm in high school lol but I dont even look like a child, imo it's because other people here look really old
zoom_z00m 7th-Apr-2012 04:37 pm (UTC)
lmao oh ikr? it's so weird
oceanhue 7th-Apr-2012 06:30 pm (UTC)
Everyone thinks I'm in high school and I'm 22 LOL. I had surgery 2 wks ago and the nurse said she'll write me a letter for PE and people kept looking at me like I was sooo young and kept saying "aww, she's so young". I was thinking 'wtf i'm almost 23!'
prettywitch 7th-Apr-2012 06:47 pm (UTC)
IKR! People think I'm still in middle school and I'm about to turn 22.
fasdsr2 7th-Apr-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
because generally white people don't age as well as other races

Edited at 2012-04-07 10:46 pm (UTC)
secretivexhero 8th-Apr-2012 12:31 am (UTC)
IDK I cant tell anyone's ages. I'm iberian white so not really white white and I always think white people from england or wherever look older lmfao idek

A lot of black celebrities age really well tho
jeru02 7th-Apr-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
She seems do cute on her twitter
brownxeyedxdork 7th-Apr-2012 04:07 pm (UTC)
Ew at that tweet :\ I liked her response though.
anna_bea2 7th-Apr-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
yikes at that first tweet. But lol @ "mom?"
eccentricvibe 7th-Apr-2012 04:12 pm (UTC)
That tweet about her not having kids is extremely rude. Like it's mandatory for her to get married and have kids once she reaches a certain age.
lissalynn 7th-Apr-2012 06:01 pm (UTC)
Most of society feels that way.

Which is extremely sad and stupid IMO.
wauwy 7th-Apr-2012 04:13 pm (UTC)
She's glorious but

-that cover is bizarrely shopped and makes her look... idk, much wider than she really is. It looks like they put her head on Oprah's body or smth.

-I still wish she wasn't in that horrible movie. She and Michael Ealy need to make a break for it.
myblackass 7th-Apr-2012 04:17 pm (UTC)
It looks like they took a nose from another photograph and pasted it on her face.
misoras 7th-Apr-2012 04:17 pm (UTC)
man. i need to rewire my thought process bc i do this thing where i check ppl's personal lives on wiki and their age to see if they have kids.

even though i'm planning on being childfree, it shouldn't be something i think about. /talkingaboutmyself

i like her
monster_mutt 7th-Apr-2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
She is GORGEOUS and I hope I look half as good/young as her when I'm 40 (I won't)

I laughed when Wade's X sued her. Oh to be privy to what that judge was thinking when he read that petition lmao.
fuzzycthulhu 7th-Apr-2012 04:51 pm (UTC)
"Is this heffa serious?!"

That's what the judge was thinking.
stylista_11 7th-Apr-2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
I LOVE ME SOME IRL GABBY.

But I hate her in movies! Idk why...I just can't help it :(
monster_mutt 7th-Apr-2012 04:21 pm (UTC)
She seems to get cast as the ditzy sexpot or something ... it's annoying
stylista_11 7th-Apr-2012 04:33 pm (UTC)
Or the uptight professional who needs a man~
inboots 7th-Apr-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
omg how is it possible to hate her in bring it on? :[
genbu_no_miko24 7th-Apr-2012 04:57 pm (UTC)
lol remember how she played the "bitchy" sidekick/friend of the protagonist in most of the 90s teen movies xD
fanabana 7th-Apr-2012 04:29 pm (UTC)
Love her.
myblackass 7th-Apr-2012 04:36 pm (UTC)
I want to know who JET thinks are the "10 Sexiest Single Celebs." I also wonder it's the same 10 people from the 1981 issue. I just don't think it's possible for JET to publish a list like that without putting Marilyn McCoo or Jayne Kennedy on it.
stellawuzadiver 7th-Apr-2012 06:25 pm (UTC)
LMFAO @ Marilyn McCoo
