Burger King Pulls Mary J. Blige Commercial After Backlash

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Mary J. Blige is peddling crispy chicken for Burger King and getting a lot of heat for it. Yesterday, the Queen of hip-hop soul was featured in a new ad for the restaurant’s revamped menu in which she sings the praises of the Crispy Chicken Snack Wrap. Standing atop a table, the diva belts out—to the tune of her song “Don’t Mind”-- the ingredients, “Crispy chicken, fresh lettuce, three cheeses, ranch dressing, wrapped up in a tasty flour tortilla," but after public outcry the ad has disappeared from Burger King's YouTube channel.

The new spot sparked more than its share of online backlash as most fans deemed it selling out and stereotypical and were shocked that Mary would lend her name (and voice) to a sandwich. Fans took to Twiter to share sentiments like, “Just watched @maryjblige singing about chicken in a Burger King ad, and stared the blankest stare of my life” and “Oh @Maryjblige how I LOVE thee..but im not sure about this Burger King ad.”

Hip-hop branding expert and CEO of Translation, Steve Stoute, who has worked with Blige closely on successful endorsement deals like Carol’s Daughter beauty products, shared his disdain. Today he tweeted, “The issue is the burger king commercial is thT these agencies visit culture and then do work that is so in authentic it's embarrassing.” Upon last check, Burger King had removed the video from its YouTube hub.

Rumors have surfaced that Blige received $2 million for the ad. Other celebrities also promoting the burger house's new menu include soccer stud David Beckham, actress Selma Hayek and late night funny man Jay Leno.

Have to wonder how many people were fired for even letting this idea get off the drawing board.

you'd be surprised. i work in advertising and clients usually have terrible taste.

also, mother (the agency that produced the mary commercial) is a haven for aged white hipsters. if i recall correctly they don't have any black creatives on their staff.

I work at a local NBC and CBS affiliate. Pretty sure our local commercials aren't this bad, for the sole fact that we know what's offensive.

trust me, the d-bags at mother who were responsible for that commercial were probably hardcore ass kissing mary on set, regardless of how fucked up their concept is.

i won't talk your ear off, but i've heard soooooooo much dirt on what goes on behind the scenes when it comes to marketing fast food. it's so hideous.

the only kind of fast food-type advertising i enjoy producing is liquor stuff. not gonna lie, liquor stuff is always fun.

Like the Belvedere rape ad?

Sorry, you know it'd be brought up. I have the least sting.

thankfully i've been spared that (but i don't do print stuff, so i'm spared the really bad stuff). although, i once wasn't invited to a photoshoot for a cognac brand that turned out to be a terry richardson- orchestrated faux orgy.
but that belvedere ad is the same exact shit as the mary commercial, as far as adguy mentality. white, 30-something "hipster" dudes with limited world views. it's embarrassing. so much of the stuff i've heard people say in both casual conversation and in meetings is racist/sexist/insulting, both clients and agency people.

I worked at an NBC affiliate for years. The spots weren't too bad, our commercial manager's voice was SO GRATING after awhile.
