How Lady Gaga Helped Changed the World @ 26

Happy Birthday, Lady Gaga! Ms. Gaga was born this way twenty-six years ago, and in honor of the singer’s totally fabulous b-day, we’re here to talk about how she’s not only an amazing singer and entertainer, she’s also a world class activist. Take a look at some of the activism she’s done over the past year!

+ The Born This Way Foundation

You know the “Born This Way” song, but did you know Lady Gaga has also formed a foundation with this name? Sure enough! It promises “to foster a more accepting society, where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. The Foundation is dedicated to creating a safe community that helps connect young people with the skills and opportunities they need to build a braver, kinder world.” We were there for the launch -- check out everything that went down!

+ Stopping the Spread of AIDS

Lady Gaga has had some unique ways of talking about AIDS -- with her clothes and makeup. She showed up to "Good Morning America" decked out in latex, her special Gaga way of telling people about the importance of wearing condoms. Besides that, she’s also gotten behind the MAC AIDS Fund’s Viva Glam campaign, where money made from lipstick goes to fighting AIDS around the world.

+ Putting an End to DADT

Part of her crusade for gay rights has included speaking out against "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell," which said gay and lesbian service members could not openly serve in the armed forces. DADT has since been gotten rid of, and our birthday girl did what she could to help, including making an online plea to the Senate and speaking at rallies.

+ Speaking Out About Bullying

It always hurts to be bullied, and Gaga went to the White House to speak about ending the practice. It impressed President Obama enough that he tweeted, “Yesterday, @ladygaga visited the White House to talk about putting an end to bullying.”

+ Helping Girls’ Self-Esteem

The images we see in the media might be airbrushed to the extreme, but we still compare ourselves to them. Speaking about this at a young women’s conference, Gaga said, “Every video I'm in, every magazine cover, they stretch you; they make you perfect. It's not real life. I'm gonna say this about girls: The dieting wars have got to stop. Everyone just knock it off. Because at the end of the day, it's affecting kids your age. And it's making girls sick.” The fashionista herself has struggled with eating disorders and spoken about it. Today, help yourself to some birthday cake, Lady Gaga — you deserve it!
