Spectacular Never Before Seen Titanic Images Give Insight Into The 'Unsinkable Ship'!

Next month will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

The wreck of the mammoth hull is a puzzle of corroded steel strewn across a thousand acres of the North Atlantic seabed, where it was discovered in 1985 by explorer Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel.

The ghostly images of the ship were captured at (WHOI) in Massachusetts by William Lange using a blown-up sonar survey map of the site to create a meticulously stitched-together mosaic that has taken months to construct.

This imagery is the result of an ambitious multi-million-dollar expedition undertaken in August to September 2010.

It was captured by three state-of-the-art robotic vehicles that flew at various altitudes above the abyssal plain in long, preprogrammed swaths.

“This is a game-changer,” said (NOAA) archaeologist James Delgado, the expedition’s scientist.

“In the past, trying to understand Titanic was like trying to understand Manhattan at midnight in a rainstorm—with a flashlight. Now we have a site that can be understood and measured, with definite things to tell us. In years to come this historic map may give voice to those people who were silenced, seemingly forever, when the cold water closed over them.”

Isn't the ship gonna completely deteriorate in the next 50 years?
trinity_squared 22nd-Mar-2012 04:25 am (UTC)
I have read this many times myself. Add in the number of decades, saltwater and everything else into the mix. It has been said it will eventually cave in on itself and fade away. :'(
pussycatd0ll 22nd-Mar-2012 04:28 am (UTC)
That's so sad. I wish we could have a replica built as a museum or something.
helsings 22nd-Mar-2012 04:36 am (UTC)
I wish, as impossible as it is, they could somehow take the ship with them? Like gather it in pieces for all I care and reconstruct it in a museum.
myrasis 22nd-Mar-2012 04:24 am (UTC)
i've always found the titanic so fascinating for some reason, i've got a ton of books on it from when i was younger.

Getting my tickets. This is the only movie I will see in 3D. Mostly because I want to see that ship sink in 3D. My heart is colder than the Atlantic.
winter_lace 22nd-Mar-2012 04:48 am (UTC)
I wanna see that dude hit the propellors in 3D.

Probably but I don't think it would've float and he didn't wanna take the risk of both of them dying.~~~~~~

trinimacphisto 22nd-Mar-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
even if there wasn't room, there was floating crap everywhere, he could've climbed onto one of them
chuk_is_dazzled 22nd-Mar-2012 04:47 am (UTC)
ikr, there was stuff everywhere
lidahbidah 22nd-Mar-2012 04:33 am (UTC)
Nah uh! Remember when he tried to get on, and it almost tipped over.
lovetiffani 22nd-Mar-2012 04:34 am (UTC)
Or she could have laid on top of him. I mean body heat + they are both out of the water.

FU Rose.
bgwqlc 22nd-Mar-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
I always thought they could both have got on that piece of wood but I knew it was more tragic and romantic if he died.
sauron 22nd-Mar-2012 04:58 am (UTC)
I will forever be bitter about this.
merenwen17 22nd-Mar-2012 04:59 am (UTC)

hippie_chick 22nd-Mar-2012 12:51 pm (UTC)
Don't I remember him trying to climb up on there with Rose and it not holding both of them securely enough so he told her to stay on. But yeah there was other debris around, maybe he just didn't want to leave Rose. :(
sparkfactory 22nd-Mar-2012 04:26 am (UTC)
omg this is so interesting

i remember when i was younger (like 7 or 8) i was really into the titanic and my grandma bought me the movie guide to james cameron's titanic before it came out thinking it was just about the ship and i just remember being like "the fuck is this there's a naked lady in it like three times!!!!!!!!"

come to think of it, it's really bizarre the amount of children's books i had on the titanic. like of all the things to write for children you picked the titanic, wtf
queenweasley 22nd-Mar-2012 04:34 am (UTC)
I had a kid's (it could have been young adultish) book about a boy named Albert who was on the Titanic. Can't remember what it was called but I liked it when I was a kid.
sparkfactory 22nd-Mar-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
idk if i ever read that one, my favorite was always polar the titanic bear. which was just about this kid's bear that happened to be on the titanic at some point. i liked it because he came from FAO Schwarz and i was like OMG I'VE TOTES BEEN THERE I AM CONNECTED TO TITANIC~
elektra180 22nd-Mar-2012 04:41 am (UTC)
I had the "choose your own adventure" kids book for the Titanic. lol
pussycatd0ll 22nd-Mar-2012 04:26 am (UTC)
To anyone else obsessed with Titanic, a few months ago (I think) there were photos from a survivors camera on the internet. I believe they were being auctioned off.

They are incredibly haunting, but I cannot stop looking at them sometimes.
distant_lines 22nd-Mar-2012 04:35 am (UTC)
A boat ignored the distress signals from the Titanic? How did I not know about this. I wonder if that haunted any of the people involved in that decision to ignore it.
pussycatd0ll 22nd-Mar-2012 04:49 am (UTC)
I wonder the same thing. I haven't read the article in a while but did they say they don't know who the boat was or am I making that up? I should just go read it again. It makes you think though right?
hippie_chick 22nd-Mar-2012 12:58 pm (UTC)
I think they just thought the flares were fireworks being sent up by the ship celebrating the maiden voyage or something so they didn't think anything of it at first.

Nothing beats that the Titanic was receiving iceberg warnings as early as 1pm that day though, and THEY were ignored pretty much.
misslaura317 22nd-Mar-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
thanks for this! this is amazing
hormoaning 22nd-Mar-2012 04:26 am (UTC)
omg im obsessed w/ the titanic
shedove 22nd-Mar-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
I can't read titanic shit on wikipedia or anywhere. Something about reading about the people and deaths makes me feel like crying all the damn time. Idk what it is
bradentastic 22nd-Mar-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
i can't believe it hasn't decomposed yet... the whole story is fascinating. back around when titanic the movie came out, there was an exhibit that went up on the ship at a local museum where they had all of these artifacts from the ship--i still remember how chilling it was.
telemann 22nd-Mar-2012 04:30 am (UTC)
It's falling apart. It may last another 20 years, but each time they go down, it's noticeable the damage from the slow rusting of the iron etc.
chimbleysweep 22nd-Mar-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
I'm going to cry when that happens.
lunanoir 22nd-Mar-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
The exhibit still exists. It's currently in Vegas at the Luxor. It has the "big piece" and everything.
trixx_r4_kidz 22nd-Mar-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
The part where Jack is bracing Rose for the ship to finally sink...smh. That shit still gets me to this day; it makes me wonder if it was really like that for the survivors up to that point. I'm still shocked at how that ship sank and there was nothing they could do.
pussycatd0ll 22nd-Mar-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
I know for me sometimes when I see photos of people from that era they look so solemn, it's hard to imagine them being silly, romantic, or even scared...which is ignorant on my part. I forget where I was going with this, but I think that scene you mentioned captures that survival instinct amidst panic so it was probably just like that. I can't even imagine being in the middle of the ocean in the dark. I think what would scare me the most is having nothing to hold onto. I'm sorry, idk why I wrote you 5 chapters lol.
loveyourgr0und 22nd-Mar-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
i went to the hunger games today and the titanic trailer was played before it, it was like excitement overload lol
