James Spader Is Leaving THE OFFICE

Well, that didn't last long.

James Spader is leaving THE OFFICE at the end of this season, NBC has confirmed. Spader, who plays CEO Robert California, filled the void left by Steve Carell after his departure last season. Spader wasn't on the show as much as Carell was - a CEO isn't as hands-on as a branch manager - but many assumed he would remain for more than one season.

Not so, says producer/star Paul Lieberstein. Here's his quote to Variety:
"James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television. He's been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I'm grateful for that."

The show will survive without Spader's presence, it's proven it has enough characters to get by. But, as I've said many times before, perhaps it's time to start crafting an endgame for the charming NBC comedy. Not only is the cast losing Spader at the end of this season, series regular and writer Mindy Kaling might exit if her pilot gets picked up by Fox. As well, Rainn Wilson is planning to leave for a Dwight Schrute spin-off.  While THE OFFICE isn't a bad show, it's definitely worse for wear. So, yes, the show could go on for a few more seasons but should it?

one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television?
squishinator 28th-Feb-2012 12:43 am (UTC)
Maybe the person who said that has spent their entire life watching only commercials.

Well, Toby said it, so, yknow.
rampant_geekery 28th-Feb-2012 12:39 am (UTC)
holy shit cancel it already
lloydsgurl 28th-Feb-2012 12:39 am (UTC)
I did enjoy aspects of Robert California, like the Halloween episode.

James Spader is my dream life narrator, though.
syzygy09 28th-Feb-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
Any goodwill that the Halloween episode brought was cancelled out in the Christmas episode where Andy was legitimately concerned about Robert California date raping Erin. Cause that's what happened.

I don't blame Spader at all, it's just been SUPER shitty writing.
thetxbelle 28th-Feb-2012 01:39 am (UTC)
not morgan freeman? He has a much better narrative voice imo
lloydsgurl 28th-Feb-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
there's just something about the way james spader speaks. idk what it is.
galagooo 28th-Feb-2012 02:45 am (UTC)
I don't get the Morgan Freeman love. His voice is so boring to me.
numbedtoe 28th-Feb-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
I want James Earl Jones for mine. Darth Vader rules.

No, the US has got to learn how to wrap up shows better! I haven't watched yet this season, but I think that is part of the problem. The show was amazing for years, but they should wrap it up before people hate it.
masterofmystery 28th-Feb-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
too late
suedeheadspike 28th-Feb-2012 12:40 am (UTC)
"(...) he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television."

WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT?
marinade 28th-Feb-2012 12:41 am (UTC)
I've liked him in all his incarnations - especially on Boston Legal.
thefreshchuff 28th-Feb-2012 12:41 am (UTC)
Good, his character is sucking that show dry.

I mean, it's not what it once was, but the episodes without Robert are SO MUCH BETTER than when he's around.
sassandthecity 28th-Feb-2012 12:41 am (UTC)
James Spader needs to move himself over to Revenge and play Nolan's father.
squishinator 28th-Feb-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
Why did they bring him in to begin with? and gave him star credits over characters who are in it way more and have been on the show from the start? his character is fucking irrelevant anyways. Obviously they just wanted a "name".
bluepassiflora 28th-Feb-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
When I see Paul Lieberstein's name I feel a tiny bit of what Michael felt for Toby. He is the worst.
ionizable 28th-Feb-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
haha, why?
rareouldtimes 28th-Feb-2012 12:43 am (UTC)
i thought rainn wilson said the dwight spin-off was a terrible idea and wasn't happening

he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television.

lol. it's funny cause its not true.
klutzy_girl 28th-Feb-2012 12:58 am (UTC)
The Rainn comment was a joke. It is happening.
rareouldtimes 28th-Feb-2012 12:59 am (UTC)
what a not funny joke
masterofmystery 28th-Feb-2012 12:43 am (UTC)
i don't even know why i watch it anymore, but dear god end this show already

and holy shit, who the hell is going to watch a show entirely about dwight?! he's better enjoyed in small doses
syzygy09 28th-Feb-2012 12:48 am (UTC)
A Dwight spinoff will perform worse than "Joey" -- no doubt in my mind.

You nailed it.He works in small doses, but I'd rather poke my own eye out than watch an entire show devoted to him. He isn't Frasier from Cheers.

Bless NBC's desperate heart.
aawler 28th-Feb-2012 12:43 am (UTC)
i thought the dwight spin-off rumor was dismissed?
theratwhispers 28th-Feb-2012 12:44 am (UTC)
Sometimes, they need to learn when to stop. Most shows go down the tubes after the 5th or 6th season.
