SHANGHAI CALLING is a romantic comedy about modern-day American immigrants in an unfamiliar land.  When an ambitious New York attorney is sent to Shanghai on assignment, he immediately stumbles into a legal mess that could spell the end of his career.  But with help from a beautiful relocation specialist, a well-connected foreign businessman, a clever but unassuming journalist, and a street-smart assistant, Sam might just save his job, discover romance, and learn to appreciate the many wonders Shanghai has to offer.

IKR. Although Daniel Henney's half-white and half-Korean and he's playing a Chinese guy so that's kind of Hollywood I guess. (I don't have a problem with it though since he could pass for Chinese.)

I agree with dothecrunge tbh. I'm both glad that an Asian man in Hollywood isn't be desexualized AND they're promoting interracial relations (because you don't really see the Asian man with the white girl, it's usually the other way around).

Omg what. This is so relevant to me. I'm going on a solo trip to Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong in a couple months and even though I'm Chinese-American I don't speak a word of Mandarin (I do speak Cantonese though) and can't read or write Chinese characters, so I'm screwed.

And this man is DELICIOUS.

You'll be okay in HK but uhhh in the Mainland just be prepared for people speaking to you with the assumption that you'll respond. And be prepared to be slightly ripped off. Can you understand it though? Either way it might be confusing because the Chinese you hear in Beijing is completely different from the Chinese you hear in Shanghai

Yeah I've been to HK several times before and I have family there, so that'll be good. And that's exactly what I'm worried about in the Mainland--like I'd be better off being a white chick because then people would actually try to help me, lol. And no, I can't understand it. :( I'm going to try to learn some basic Mandarin really quickly.

I'm half Chinese so I'm in your boat regarding Mandarin. It's making me nervous about ever visiting China! And that was the only believable part of the trailer for me (he really didn't know about the tea? come on)

Ugh, I feel you. When I was back in China over the summer I just wanted to wear a sign around my neck saying I SPEAK ENGLISH. My Mandarin's so-so, but it gets frustrating after a while because everybody assumes you're a native.

You'll definitely want to learn some basic Mandarin for Beijing and Shanghai because they're big ass scary places and Beijing's subway system makes zero sense.

Seconding everyone else, you'll be fine in HK. I've been to the Mainland a number of times, and studied in Beijing for about 10 months. I'm Chinese but was born in New Zealand, so I had to learn while I was over there. Even in Beijing, don't expect people to know English. Definitely bring a phrasebook around with you, and if you've got an iPhone I think there are apps you can download?

How long are you staying for? I love HK and Beijing, but am kind of so-so on Shanghai.

If you're going to HK, then I recommend to take a day or two to visit Macao. It's a very beautiful place that's only a hour ferry ride away.

I spent three months in the Dominican Republic last year. I studied Spanish for a full year before I left, and I was still overwhelmed with everything for the first two months there.

I think it's just hard for anyone traveling to a new country and experiencing a new culture and language.

Yes! One of my all-time fave kdramas. Made me fall in love with Hyun Bin, and Daniel Henney is just SO GOOD to look at.
