Stephen King Reads from Shining Sequel - Dr. Sleep

King was a guest of honor at the Savannah Book Festival Closing Ceremony this past Sunday, February 18th. He discussed his tremendous library of past works, the evolution of his new book 11/22/63 and, most exciting of all, he read an excerpt from Dr. Sleep, the upcoming sequel to his historic haunted hotel tale, The Shining.

Although most of the book follows a 40-year-old Danny Torrance, the section King reads in this video deals with the events immediately after the destruction of the Overlook Hotel.

numbedtoe 22nd-Feb-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)
he's one of those geeky guys that looks good for about 20 minutes when he gets to a certain age.
sistershotgun 22nd-Feb-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
I'm with you, bb. I'd hit it.
ukesenshi 22nd-Feb-2012 08:06 am (UTC)
I see Hollywood's shitty sequel formula is contagious.

LEAVE THE SHINING ALONE, STEPHEN.
slaygalthessily 22nd-Feb-2012 08:58 am (UTC)
i agree with this so much...
brandon198403 22nd-Feb-2012 08:06 am (UTC)
I didn't even know he was writing a sequel tbh.
guadalcanal 22nd-Feb-2012 08:07 am (UTC)

kamikashi 22nd-Feb-2012 08:08 am (UTC)

college students ranging from freshman to seniors. i could see some middle school or high schoolers right now not knowing him, but not college students.
sandvich 22nd-Feb-2012 01:04 pm (UTC)
lbr, Stephen King is a slightly homely Stephen King.
freeze_i_say 22nd-Feb-2012 01:12 pm (UTC)
I bet they know all the Kardashians tho - that's such a sad thought tbh ^_^
invisible_cunt 22nd-Feb-2012 03:44 pm (UTC)
i have 1 month left in my b.ed program and we have workshops all week and i kid you not, during the q&a after the principal's panel, someone asked "how do you get on the occasional teacher list?"

my friend and i looked at each other like "wait, what. did she really just ask that in front of 400 people?!" WE ARE 7 MONTHS INTO THE PROGRAM AND BITCH DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO APPLY TO SUPPLY OR ANY JOBS.
hobnailedboots 22nd-Feb-2012 08:10 am (UTC)

aliminx 22nd-Feb-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
That was an AWESOME book.
tink_1326 23rd-Feb-2012 01:22 am (UTC)
omg, I am just about done with it and I am IN LOVE. Jake's just about to go back to the future...
isntdaveone 22nd-Feb-2012 08:12 am (UTC)
a lot of his books for the past several years have been complete pieces of shit tbh.
queensabo 22nd-Feb-2012 08:17 am (UTC)
Under the Dome was pretty good until the bullshit ending, imo
isntdaveone 22nd-Feb-2012 08:20 am (UTC)
the endings of the books are never satisfying, and just ruin the experience.
miss_kate18 22nd-Feb-2012 10:28 am (UTC)
Yep, wish I had just stopped reading about 20 pages before the end.
likeomgitsalice 22nd-Feb-2012 12:02 pm (UTC)
Ugh I hated the ending so much. I loved the rest of the book but that ending was awful.
x_funkymonkey_x 22nd-Feb-2012 01:39 pm (UTC)
11/22/63 was srsly one of the best books I ever read tbh
sistershotgun 22nd-Feb-2012 06:17 pm (UTC)
I agree but his last group of short stories (Full Dark, No Stars) was great, felt like old King. I was surprised as shit.
lucce 22nd-Feb-2012 08:12 am (UTC)
Stephen has looked so thin since the accident which nearly killed him. I hope he's well and healthy, I really enjoy his work. Full Dark, No Stars was a good read.
slaughtermatic 22nd-Feb-2012 08:36 am (UTC)
I got that for my birthday, glad to hear it's good. :)

Can he not.
I still haven't had the chance to read 11/22/63 yet.
Stop putting out new books before I finish the old ones.
brenden 22nd-Feb-2012 08:17 am (UTC)

brenden 22nd-Feb-2012 08:23 am (UTC)
RELEVANT TO THE COMMUNITY, HATER. I'VE BEEN MEANING TO READ IT.
queensabo 22nd-Feb-2012 08:19 am (UTC)
favorite King book?
I'd say mine is probably Desperation or The Stand...I have love for the Langoliers short story too
brenden 22nd-Feb-2012 08:24 am (UTC)
never dug his novels, but nightmares and dreamscapes was da shit
mynamehere07 22nd-Feb-2012 08:28 am (UTC)
I loved the Langoliers until that horrible TV movie was made. The Stand is one of my favorites, but I'm not big on his novels, they tend to drag on. I think his short stories are far better, The Body (Stand by Me) is my favorite, however, it did give me an intense distaste for blueberry pie.
queensabo 22nd-Feb-2012 08:47 am (UTC)
lmao I loved the cheesy tv movie...that and the Stand I break out pretty regularly, they're so terrible and 90's it makes me nostalgic
brenden 22nd-Feb-2012 08:50 am (UTC)
i will never forgive my grandparents for subjecting me to that movie. i had nightmares of furry teeth balls chasing me for a while.
syzygy09 22nd-Feb-2012 08:29 am (UTC)
I have love for the Langoliers tv movie -- that was a million years ago, but those scrubbing bubbles with teeth scared the shit out of me.
brownxeyedxdork 22nd-Feb-2012 08:30 am (UTC)
Desperation or It
pickledprose 22nd-Feb-2012 08:31 am (UTC)
salem's lot and the long walk
monkeyprincess7 22nd-Feb-2012 08:32 am (UTC)
The Stand hands down. though IT is a close second, though it did nothing to alleviate my intense fear of clowns lol

Christine was good when I was younger, same with TommyKnockers. Movies were crap tho.
fffireburns 22nd-Feb-2012 08:33 am (UTC)
Wizard and Glass (not sry2say) and Misery

I still need to finish The Stand though, oops.
slaughtermatic 22nd-Feb-2012 08:39 am (UTC)
Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon tbh
sparrowsrflying 22nd-Feb-2012 08:40 am (UTC)
The dark half. Also the shining, bag of bones and the mist short story.

megedeborch 22nd-Feb-2012 08:59 am (UTC)
The Stand & IT - had the most impact on me when I read them as a teenager. Although most of his older work a pretty much flawless.

And 'The Long Walk', although it's published under Bachman, but man - I love this book. Made me cry.
fantasialopez 22nd-Feb-2012 09:18 am (UTC)
I love the short stories collections, can't pick a favorite though. Different Seasons is my favorite novella collection for sure. Favorite book might be It.
thefreshchuff 22nd-Feb-2012 09:21 am (UTC)
I remember really enjoying The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. I randomly have it in Pop-Up form.
miss_kate18 22nd-Feb-2012 10:32 am (UTC)
Desperation, Lisey's Story, Pet Sematary, The Long Walk.

As for short stories - N, The Langoliers, and The Ten O'Clock People.
rowan_belle 22nd-Feb-2012 12:57 pm (UTC)
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Green Mile and Salem's Lot
of_silver 22nd-Feb-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
The Stand, Salem's Lot, Night Shift
jezemel 22nd-Feb-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
The Shining. I was so sorry when I finished it because I didn't want it to end. Misery is really good, too. So is Thinner. Carrie.

I would have loved Pet Sematary, but I think it went on too long.

I hated The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and I'm really surprised to see it mentioned in this thread twice. One of the worse books I've ever read.
dives 22nd-Feb-2012 04:46 pm (UTC)
I thought 'salem's Lot was very good, but it depressed the hell out of me.
sophistiquated 22nd-Feb-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
The Stand, but I've only read three of his books so far lol
naveedchick 22nd-Feb-2012 06:43 pm (UTC)
I've only read Carrie so far, but I loved it.
slaughtermatic 22nd-Feb-2012 08:34 am (UTC)
