Madonna death rumours denied: Lady GaGa fans, Will Smith blamed

Madonna is the latest celebrity to have become the target of a death hoax.

The 'Give Me All Ur Luvin' singer was rumoured to have passed away after the topic "RIP Madonna" began trending on Twitter.

It is believed to have been started as a prank to coincide with the funeral of the late Whitney Houston, which is taking place in New Jersey this afternoon (February 18).

The 'I Will Always Love You' singer passed away at the age of 48 while staying at the Beverly Hilton hotel last Saturday (February 11).

Other Twitter users have claimed that the trend was sparked by fans of Lady GaGa, who has long been accused of trying to model herself on Madonna.

It has also been suggested that "RIP Madonna" started circulating after Will Smith (ETA: NOT THE ACTOR) mocked her collaboration with LMFAO at the Super Bowl.

"RIP Madonna." he wrote. "You aren't dead, but your career is."

Eddie Murphy has also fallen victim to a death hoax this month, while the likes of Bon Jon Jovi, Kevin Bacon and Charlie Sheen were all rumoured to have passed away at various points last year.
