The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo India Release Cancelled After Deemed 'Unsuitable'

NEW DELHI – The much-awaited Daniel Craig starrer The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo won't be seeing an India release as the film's director David Fincher has refused to cut some scenes as specified by India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The scenes in question include two lovemaking scenes between the film's principal female lead Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) and Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) ; a lesbian scene featuring Lisbeth and a woman she meets at a bar; a scene where Lisbeth is raped and tortured. In a follow-up scene, she tortures her tormentor as a video of her being assaulted plays in the background.

“Sony Pictures will not be releasing The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in India. The Censor Board has adjudged the film unsuitable for public viewing in its unaltered form and, while we are committed to maintaining and protecting the vision of the director, we will, as always, respect the guidelines set by the Board,” said a statement released by Mumbai-based Sony Pictures India which had earlier announced that the film was to open here on Feb. 10.

According to media reports here Saturday, a CBFC official was quoted stating that “the protocol usually is to blur out the scenes that have frontal nudity.” But a spokesperson from Sony Pictures was also quoted stating that the scenes were specifically asked to be cut and not blurred.

ngl, I refused to see this movie with a date because I knew it would have been way too awkward since I read the book first.

alaynestone 29th-Jan-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
Smart move.
parisdiorchanel 29th-Jan-2012 01:07 am (UTC)

superdogbiter 29th-Jan-2012 01:08 am (UTC)

0sleep2dream0 29th-Jan-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
"a scene where Lisbeth is raped and tortured"
parisdiorchanel 29th-Jan-2012 01:12 am (UTC)
oop at me.
frklphace 29th-Jan-2012 01:12 am (UTC)
rape scene was included

a scene where Lisbeth is raped and tortured

i don't think the follow up torture scene was included in the cuts though.

actxappalledx 29th-Jan-2012 01:12 am (UTC)

restlesswinter 29th-Jan-2012 01:19 am (UTC)
Its a screener for the Academy but somethings weird, like the scene where she confronts the guy in the train station is rushed and muted or something. I'll wait for the DVD rip.
actxappalledx 29th-Jan-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
where did you watch? i watched the screener and it was normal for me

I loved her hair during this scene of the movie. The braids were really qt on her
gohometerrorist 29th-Jan-2012 01:52 am (UTC)
ia! makes me wish i could pull off that haircut, tbh.
mhfromnh 29th-Jan-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
I still need to see this. me and my sister keep planning to see it, but then fucking douchebag manager calls her in to work.
arcee8 29th-Jan-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
I haven't seen this version, but I just watched the Swedish version and I get the impression that they are really trying to make this a "sexy" movie just from that still alone. In the Swedish version, Mikael is fully clothed, but Daniel Craig (and bless his beautiful body) is shirtless? The relationship between Lisbeth and Mikael in the Swedish version wasn't sexy, imo, it just was, if that makes sense.
frklphace 29th-Jan-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
well i think we just needed more shirtless daniel craig. this wasn't a sexy scene so much as endearing and a real way of seeing how lisbeth had grown to care for him.

also it makes more sense than him running into the shower clothed lol
arcee8 29th-Jan-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
Yeah, that makes sense, but at the same time I kind of thought the reason why he was clothed and she was wetting him down was because he was covered in muck.

Don't get me wrong, I love Daniel Craig. And I don't mind seeing him naked either, but it seemed that it made the movie overall sexier than the Swedish version. I don't mean to compare them either, not really, but I just don't like the idea of making a relationship like theirs sexy...but you say it isn't, so my point is kinda moot. hahaha
karinette001 29th-Jan-2012 01:16 am (UTC)
IA, from my perspective, the relationship between Mikael & Lisbeth came out of nowhere ( e.g their sex scene). In the american version, it looks like they were like :''oh he has a hot bod, it'll attract viewers so we'll take any chance we get to have him shirtless).
soul_amazinn 29th-Jan-2012 01:26 am (UTC)
Sex sells and I would say the way they marketed the film was trying to make it sexy.

I don't think the movie itself felt like that. The sex scenes between Lisbeth and Mikael were random IMO The romance was barely there.
iamalreadyinuse 29th-Jan-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
Lisbeth/Mikael were very sexy in this movie. Great chemistry, and she opens up to him, which I really liked. Just another reason why US version >>>>>>>> Swedish one.
dannyupshaw 29th-Jan-2012 01:51 am (UTC)
Swedish version is feminist, US version is 50s
whiskybars 29th-Jan-2012 03:26 am (UTC)
they marketed as "fight club with a girl" and imo that rape scene was oddly glamorized
karinette001 29th-Jan-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
understandable imo
matchitehew 29th-Jan-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
India can't hang tbh.
restlesswinter 29th-Jan-2012 01:16 am (UTC)
Shut the FUCK up already, your trolling is abysmal and embarrassing, and you reek of try-hard.
duchello 29th-Jan-2012 04:45 am (UTC)
who was the original commenter? (yes im nosy)
pennylane101 29th-Jan-2012 01:16 am (UTC)
i watched it the other day and i didn't feel like rape was being glorified tbh. what do you mean? i'm really curious
infinite_drag 29th-Jan-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
i thought it was because he died before he was able to finish it.
pennylane101 29th-Jan-2012 01:14 am (UTC)
awesome movie tbh. anyone know if they sequels are happening as well?
restlesswinter 29th-Jan-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
Yes, Sony announced it was moving ahead with The Girl That Played With Fire for a late 2013 release.
pennylane101 29th-Jan-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
thank you :)

matchitehew 29th-Jan-2012 01:16 am (UTC)
They are making the sequels but it's still all in the air if David Fincher will return to direct the 2nd and 3rd film.
angel_dust_fury 29th-Jan-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
They are. Both Rooney and Daniel are contracted for the 2nd and 3rd film. It may come out late 2013 according to Wikipedia.
restlesswinter 29th-Jan-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
Why would they ask him to cut the most crucial scenes? Why not also ask Scream to remove all scenes involving murder? Fucking idiots.
matchitehew 29th-Jan-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
infinite_drag 29th-Jan-2012 01:18 am (UTC)
came in here to say this.
insaynejayne 29th-Jan-2012 01:52 am (UTC)
love ur icon + fully support it
calcified 29th-Jan-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
Because they don't have the same censor system as we do here. I think anyone can go to any movie.
frklphace 29th-Jan-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
I thought this film (and the swedish film - even moreso than the american film) played the rape scene too many times. How many times did we need to be reminded that she was brutally raped? i kept cringing every time it came back again.
arcee8 29th-Jan-2012 01:21 am (UTC)
They replayed the rape scene? I watched the Swedish film earlier today and I only remember the one rape scene. And I guess the earlier assault when he makes her perform oral sex.
actxappalledx 29th-Jan-2012 01:24 am (UTC)
Lisbeth records it and when she goes back for revenge, she puts the DVD on his dvd player and makes him watch it, but that was the only time it was shown again and it wasn't in its entirety
frklphace 29th-Jan-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
yes the video plays again the same night when lisbeth comes home (we don't see it) again when she goes for payback and i think one more time.

i've seen all the swedish films and they play/are mentioned/are heard in all of them. jfc enough!!!
frklphace 29th-Jan-2012 01:26 am (UTC)
i think i was more offended with the swedish version and... victim, so maybe i'm sensitive.
actxappalledx 29th-Jan-2012 01:24 am (UTC)
They only played it once, though. Well, twice. When it happens, and then when Lisbeth puts the DVD in. I don't think that's very many times
0sleep2dream0 29th-Jan-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
How can they play it too many times, if it only happened once?
filmnoir 29th-Jan-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
Because it is a pivotal point of the film and it's where much of Lisbeth's motives for the following three novels, which are set to be made by Fincher, come from. If you're offended by it, then the series probably isn't for you.
winegums 29th-Jan-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
Er, no "they" are a bunch of idiots who don't know jack about art or film or anything, and I resent their prudery because who are this bunch of old farts to decide what adults should be watching onscreen?

The film was rated R anyway, it would have been for over-18s here, but noooo, their bullshit has to get in the way. And they pulled the same thing with Black Swan last year (the sex scene between Nina and Lily was cut) and countless other films before that.
bordellos 29th-Jan-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
i don't think it's understandable. they are more or less treating their adult population like children. it's not fair, imo.
music_lover56 29th-Jan-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
I want to see this but idk. I'm sure it's good though.
