Hey Y'All, Paula Deen To Announce Diabetes Diagnosis

The Daily is reporting that Paula Deen, the large-living queen of heavy cooking, is about to come clean with what some say has long been her dirtiest secret: her diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes.

Rumors of Deen's diabetes first started to swirl in April, when The National Enquirer and The Daily Mail both reported that the TV chef was hiding her disease for fear that it would endanger her credibility as a chef.

There's no doubt that fans would be upset to learn that Deen had been keeping such a major disease, and a major consequence of heavy eating, from their knowledge. It would certainly cast an alarming pall over the reckless abandon with which she endorses delicacies like turducken. And it would lend support to rival Anthony Bourdain's much-ballyhooed critique of Deen's culinary style.

It's worth noting, though, that in the past nine months, Deen has diversified her activities away from her old monomaniacal focus on fatty foods. She's been selling flavored lip balms and announced plans for a clothing line. She wrote a best-selling cookbook and ink a contract for two more, at a new publisher. And her son Bobby recently debuted his Cooking Channel show "Not My Mama's Meals," which showcases healthy versions of Southern classics.

Deen has also been slowly moving toward greater candor in recent months: she admitted to smoking cigarettes on a recent episode of the Dr. Oz show. And Deen will soon be appearing, in her own home, on an episode of Oprah's new OWN show, Oprah's Next Chapter. Given the timing, the latter could even be a perfect venue for the diabetes confession.

But if Deen has successfully hidden her diabetes so far, why change tack now?

The Daily has a potentially convincing answer: she's in it for the money. According to the rumors the iPad publication has heard, Deen has signed a deal to endorse a diabetes medication from major pharmaceuticals company Novartis. Leave it up to Deen to turn what could have been a career-wrecking scandal into a financial windfall.

Curious to see how much backlash she will get about this tbh. Oh, Paula and your sticks of butter.

[info]youth_depraved 13th-Jan-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
Yeah I saw it on the Colbert Report a while back, Norway I believe?
[info]superdogbiter 13th-Jan-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
we can't believe it's not butter
[info]destructo_ray 13th-Jan-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
Damn, really? Sending my thoughts to Norway.

Thankfully my fave butter is back in the stores again 8)
[info]manaconda 13th-Jan-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
i'm willing to send butter care packages to the butter-needy in norway.
[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
She probably intercepted the butter shipments.

ia
[info]manaconda 13th-Jan-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
always knew all that butter would do her in.

ngl, even though i've always tried to be careful about what i eat since type 2 diabetes runs in my mom's family, studying its complications in my chronic illnesses class makes me want to cry into a salad. that shit ain't nothing to sneeze at and it's frustrating seeing so many patients be flippant about its management =/

my cousin is 18 and already has type 2 and is on metformin, and she doesn't manage her diet at all. i'm scared for her tbh

I hear you Leela! Diabetes runs in my family too and moderating my food intake sucks but I know it's for the better (though I sometimes cave and go on a sweets binge). I check my blood sugar every week even.
[info]__angelofmusic 13th-Jan-2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
Diabetes runs on both sides of my family. My Mom has hers under control but my uncle has that "oh fuck it" mentality. I'm still trying to get my eating habits on the right track, but still struggle a lot.
[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:33 pm (UTC)
I hate when people say she promotes obesity. No one HAS to make her butter-loaded and sugar-topped foods, they can easily change the channel or wait until Rachel Ray comes on to get a healthier recipe. Also, one can eat her food and not gain weight depending on their metabolism. It's more like she's promoting unhealthy eating choices which =/= obesity.
[info]jezemel 13th-Jan-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
Ia, she should be able to cook whatever she wants without having to babysit people.
[info]vehiclesshockme 13th-Jan-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
I agree to an extent. It's the same thing with people trying to make Happy Meals illegal. No one is forcing you to buy them for your children and your five year old isn't going to buy it on their own. You can get water and apples with it instead of pop and fries. Not to mention if the kid wants the toy you can just buy the toy at McDonald's without even buying a Happy Meal. Like you can just roll inside and be like, "I would like a bottle of water and a Happy Meal toy." Basically people like a scapegoat because no one wants to be the blame for their own poor decisions.

[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
If they made happy meals illegal I'd be mad b/c sometimes I want McD's but I just want something small lol. But ia, it's all scapegoating. The human race has a terrible history with blaming others for everything.
[info]paranoiattaque 14th-Jan-2012 12:11 am (UTC)
THIS, so hard. those people are goddamn idiots.

see also, i need a happy meal fix every few months. ha!
[info]coryrain 13th-Jan-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
THIS! ALL OF THIS! Paula isn't shoving the food down your throat and then sitting on you so you can't exercise! I made her chocolate gooey butter cookies all the damn time, but a make sure I play Just Dance after I eat them. ;)
[info]invisiblesins 13th-Jan-2012 05:44 pm (UTC)
i only watch her show b/c i know i won't ever get to taste it.
[info]guitarscreams 13th-Jan-2012 05:58 pm (UTC)
I totally agree.

I've made quite a few recipes of hers, and have substituted most of her ingredients for the "sugar-free" version (because my dad is diabetic).
[info]demented_21 13th-Jan-2012 06:03 pm (UTC)
ia. Plus, if a person eats balanced meals and still wants to make her recipes, like, once a month or something as a treat, is that wrong? It's like getting a pizza with tons of toppings. A treat. It's not like there are people who eat her food every single day, I mean come on.
[info]marywebgirl 13th-Jan-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
I think people put on huge blinders when it comes to the healthiness of food, though. I can try to dig up some of the reports of how people's ordering changed at places that started putting calories on their menus, and it's pretty drastic. Just anecdotally the Cold Stone near me flat out closed when they did that.
[info]sweet_honesty 13th-Jan-2012 08:34 pm (UTC)
the worst, most dangerous person to America
[info]paranoiattaque 14th-Jan-2012 12:08 am (UTC)
agreed. you can also substitute some ingredients to make lighter dishes. ina garten on barefoot contessa is the same way, just not as much deepfrying and more on the creams and butters etc.

in fairness to paula deen, she also has some lighter options on the more recent shows. i saw her make a cheesecake with low fat cottage cheese, sugarfree jello and strawberries.
[info]foxylov3r 13th-Jan-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
not even shocked she eats horribly and the amount of sugar and butter she puts into shit is like :X insanity!
[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
IKR every dessert she makes she adds a "dollop" of whipped cream...ie: half the container.
[info]la_bandida 13th-Jan-2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
My sister made her pumpkin pie cake thing this past Thanksgiving (why, I don't really know since she's a Type I Diabetic -- but common sense and my sister never really went together), and she said she had to put like 4-8 cups of butter in the thing. No counting how much sugar was in it. While it's much better than pumpkin pie in taste, I refused to have more than one piece of it. I felt my arteries and pancreas crying out in horror even then.
[info]withoutyoursmil 13th-Jan-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
EW! 4-8 cups is DISGUSTING. I can't even imagine. WTF. and i'm a total fatty @ heart too.

Edited at 2012-01-13 06:32 pm (UTC)
[info]abiding 13th-Jan-2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
Jesus Christ 4-8 cups!? Anything with more than 2 cups of butter TOPS I balk away from.
[info]pink_dog 13th-Jan-2012 08:02 pm (UTC)
good lord

i won't even eat pumpkin pie; I think of all the calories, etc. You can make a pumpkin smoothie that tastes the same with a fraction of the calories...and no butter.
[info]heyx_lyla 13th-Jan-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
4 TO 8 CUPS?!?! I can practically feel my arteries clogging just reading that.
[info]dcdiva 13th-Jan-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
In all fairness it actually has 16 tablespoons, which is 1 cup:

http://www.pauladeen.com/recipes/view2/pumpkin_gooey_butter_cake

Which is still a cup of butter, but not 4-8.
[info]vehiclesshockme 13th-Jan-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
Is anyone genuinely surprised she has a health problem though?
[info]loony_moony 13th-Jan-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
If they are, they're really stupid.
[info]filmorejive 13th-Jan-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
is anyone surprised? look at the shit she cooks. i mean sure it looks delicious but its the kind of food that will kill you.
[info]simplychristina 13th-Jan-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
Why is Paula Deen's health status anyone's business though? I mean, strange and crappy thing to be leaking.

(And no, the fact she cooks unhealthy food isn't a justification. If you can't tell already that the stuff she makes is terrible for you, it's not her fault.)

Edited at 2012-01-13 05:35 pm (UTC)
[info]vehiclesshockme 13th-Jan-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
The justification, not that I necessarily agree with it, is that people probably try to argue, "Well she eats this stuff all the time and nothing is wrong with her!"
[info]skunk 13th-Jan-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
weight concern trolls make everyone's health their business. its sad.
[info]georgie_georgie 13th-Jan-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
She also breathes heavily, like she's out of breath. sometimes you can hear it on her show.
[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:39 pm (UTC)
It's obvi her excitement to shovel a bite of brown sugar and butter casserole into her mouth with a few dollops of heavy cream on top duh
[info]lfitzb 13th-Jan-2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
Apnea to be honest. I diagnosed her diabeetus a long time ago.

[info]magwildwood 13th-Jan-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
oh damn. game changer.

jk, not surprising.
[info]violetskyy04 13th-Jan-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
The only thing I would like to know is who didn't realize that Southern food was fattening?
[info]simplychristina 13th-Jan-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
If people didn't realize already that frying stuff like mac & cheese and adding bacon was terrible for you already, then there's no help for them.
[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
Lol ikr. Lots of people down here use butter and everything. Hell my mum grew up in Cali and has always used butter for cooking, not much oil or anything. It's also a sign of what era one grew up in. Paula is older and butter was the easiest thing to add flavor to food in her days.
[info]ohsnapitscory 13th-Jan-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)

yeah, so surprising

[info]antique_faery 13th-Jan-2012 07:00 pm (UTC)
Omg... I can't decide if that looks good or gross because I know my stomach wouldn't be able to handle it. Also, good lord the fat, sugar, carbs, calories, whatever in that thing would probably require eating just lettuce for a week to even it all out/burn it off. D: :/

i would eat this, i can't even lie.

[info]icangoforthat 13th-Jan-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
not surprising. but diabetes is scary, my cousin just got diagnosed with type 1 and he's only 35. :(
[info]glambbydoll 13th-Jan-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
ia it is ):
[info]pickgoldies 13th-Jan-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
Diabetes is terrifying. :( I have two friends, 17 & 19, who lost their mom to diabetes and became orphans (their dad passed years before). It happened a few years ago and the fact that the younger sister has been able to study for a year in France and her brother has been able to have fun w/ schools and friends for the past few years amazes me. I'd still be deep in depression.
[info]babbss 13th-Jan-2012 05:45 pm (UTC)
My mom had a patient once whose leg was amputated due to diabetes. He was 35. :(
[info]vehiclesshockme 13th-Jan-2012 05:48 pm (UTC)
Before I was born my grandma had a bunch of her toes and a portion of one of her heels amputated because of diabetes. The weird thing in all of it though is like because she was Catholic they had to basically give the parts back to her so they could be buried on concentrated ground. So they ended up spending a lot of money to have to keep opening her plot back up whenever she had one done.
[info]angelgurl21 13th-Jan-2012 08:42 pm (UTC)
I never knew how *many* people had diabetes until I worked in a hospital. SO many patients have terrible sores on their feet and are in danger of amputations. It always shocks me, still, to see it.
[info]bnlmaroonvwbug 14th-Jan-2012 02:01 am (UTC)
my friends mom lost both her legs a year before she passed away. :(
[info]vehiclesshockme 13th-Jan-2012 05:45 pm (UTC)
My grandma died of diabetic complications when I was 4. She was only like 54 years old. :\
[info]poisonedsky 13th-Jan-2012 05:48 pm (UTC)
My 12 year old sister has had diabetes since she was 6
[info]caesarea 13th-Jan-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
I have three diabetics in my family, two of my mom's brothers and my dad's brother. All of them are having horrible complications, too. Two can barely see, one can't walk without swaying and often falling, one had a stroke recently, one has had three strokes.

You'd think this would make other family members shape up, but nope. They're just like LOL won't happen to me. Oo
[info]sorya86 13th-Jan-2012 06:42 pm (UTC)
Diabetes is very dangerous and a lot of people don´t it seriously enough because (Typ 2) has very little immediate symptoms.
[info]enticedenigma 13th-Jan-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
if your cousin has Type 1 it has nothing to do with diet...Type 2 is the one that is diet/lifestyle related.

Type 1, your pancreas doesn't produce Insulin

Type 2, your body no longer knows how to use the Insulin it is producing or your pancreas can't produce enough Insulin anymore to maintain a healthy Blood Glucose Level.

Also, I would like to take this moment for a self plug:

Monday kicks off Day 1 of Project 365 for me and my husband( a Type 1 Diabetic) . We'll be climbing everyday for a year and filming a documentary of living with diabetes.

i think the backlash she will receive from this will be just ridiculous. it doesn't take any type of brains to realize the food she cooks for her television show is pretty much always extremely unhealthy. it's your decision to cook it/eat it. just because she dishes out unhealthy recipes doesn't mean you have to make them all the fucking time, or they should be banned. it always comes down to how you control yourself or a use of moderation. as for the fact that she has diabetes, well that's unfortunate. once again though, it simply comes down to what foods YOU decide to shove into YOUR mouth.
[info]simplychristina 13th-Jan-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
Yep, I agree. But a lot of people are lazy and want an easy scapegoat.

"You mean frying everything in 1lb of butter wasn't GOOD for me?"
