Kelly Clarkson gurl !

Full tweet:
"I love Ron Paul. I liked him a lot during the last republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he's got my vote. Too bad he probably won't."

Then people replied and this happened:

Ron Paul: "The rate of AIDS infection is on the increase again. From the gay point of view, the reasons seem quite sensible. First, these men don't really see a reason to live past their fifties. They are not married, they have no children, and their lives are centered on new sexual partners... because sex is the center of their lives, they want it to be as pleasurable as possible, which means unprotected sex. Third, they enjoy the attention & pity that comes with being sick." (1995 in a newsletter)

everything about this statement, I just don't understand how anyone can find what he's saying logical. And that last sentence, most people treat people with AIDS like pariahs, they get very little pity, wtf?

[info]canedeparie not his words but another person's — 29th-Dec-2011 01:26 pm (UTC)
I agree he is stupid and ignorant because he let those words be published in a newsletter bearing his name (and profitted from it) but he didnt' actually write them nor has he ever publicly agreed to the sentiment. the fact that an otherwise intelligent man didn't read or become aware of things he disagreed with being printed in a newsletter that shares his name is ridiculous and insulting, though.
[info]twolegs 29th-Dec-2011 02:35 pm (UTC)
I'm not saying I agree with the statement (when, in reality, I don't) but the fact that it's from 1995 is making me sideeye. 1995 was 16, 17 years ago. I'd like to hope he has changed his point of view since then (or even, hopefully misquoted? idk)
[info]perfiction 29th-Dec-2011 02:39 pm (UTC)
no, that's from a newsletter (with his name on it) that he didn't write

[info]coffeenmorphine 29th-Dec-2011 07:01 pm (UTC)
IKR? This is what I know of Ron Paul, and I am surprised Kelly would not inform herself about her candidate. Mayyybe he's changed his ludicrous opinion since '95, but it's too drastic a change for me to believe it.
[info]jinxeh13 29th-Dec-2011 09:19 pm (UTC)
My boyfriend was actually going to vote for him, until I found that excerpt and showed it to him. He was absolutely horrified, and now can't stand the man. Glad I'm dating the right person, tbh.

Ugggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Ron Paul. Anyone who supports him either knows very little about him or thinks pot is more important than women and minorities, so I automatically discount their opinion either way.
[info]ambeaux 29th-Dec-2011 06:36 am (UTC)

[info]k_byte 29th-Dec-2011 03:35 pm (UTC)
yeah pretty much this =/ i see it a lot with my friends, they are excited that he doesn't support the ~war on drugz and that he's for ~less government and then they get all shocked when the racist stuff comes out
[info]iamglory 29th-Dec-2011 07:51 pm (UTC)

TY. Someone else said this in a previous post: Ron Paul wants to end war and legalize pot. You may agree with those things but remember he arrived at those conclusions from a pretty radical point of view. Also, everything else about him is batshit crazy.

[info]shania_cares 29th-Dec-2011 06:28 am (UTC)
At least she isn't for Rick Perry?... idk what to make of this. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised though, isn't she from the south?
[info]therealycats 29th-Dec-2011 06:34 am (UTC)
She is from Texas, but I don't see what that has to do with it.

To be honest I was not aware of, for instance, the comment posted above re: his views on gay men and AIDS. To me he has seemed like the most desirable of the viable Republican candidates, but now obviously I'm going to have to reevaluate that. Not that I'm voting Republican in 2012, but he's just seemed like the least of the evils up to this point. Obviously I was mistaken, though, and Kelly may be as well. I think a lot of people seem to have this opinion of him, tbh, because I know I have a lot of (liberal) friends who supported him in 2008 and if they knew about all of this other stuff I doubt they would have.
[info]shania_cares 29th-Dec-2011 06:56 am (UTC)
I didn't know about the homophobic comments, just the racist ones. Neither is a surprise since his son Rand is such a bigot (he had to learn it somewhere). Most of the liberals I know who supported him are people whose main agenda is pot legalization, or people who claim to be liberal but do not follow politics whatsoever.

I usually assume people from the south tend to be republican, and even when they leave for Hollywood, I think old habits die hard. I'm saddened by her support of Ron Paul, but I'm not that surprised that she votes republican nor that she supports the candidate who portrays himself to be the more "sensible" candidate. w/e as long as she doesn't claim she knows all about politics or spreads Ron Paul's message through her music, I'll still listen to her.
[info]ciara_belle 29th-Dec-2011 05:18 pm (UTC)
He named his son after Ayn Rand. That gives me quite a lot of pause.

TBH, most of the self-identified liberals I know who are or were Ron Paul supporters want to legalize pot and have some vague ideas about lowering their own taxes. And that's about where their caring about Ron Paul actually ends.
[info]deftonedpiano 29th-Dec-2011 07:36 am (UTC)
I don't really think Ron Paul is an upgrade from Rick Perry, unless it's somehow beneficial that she's supporting someone far less electable.
[info]kerrence 29th-Dec-2011 08:11 am (UTC)
I am from Texas.

Ron Paul and Rick Perry are two perpetually re-elected reasons I got the fuck out.

[info]sitakhet 29th-Dec-2011 11:35 am (UTC)

I'm all, "That is a stupid fucking idea."
[info]ashleyyyy 29th-Dec-2011 02:05 pm (UTC)

omg the one tweet where they basically say Ron Paul didn't deny medical assistance to black people, therefore he's not a racist... NO THAT IS NOT HOW THAT WORKS. Privilege, the shit you say, the shit you think, and a general attitude/treatment of people is racism. Not being an asshole to minorities in a specific instance doesn't absolve anything. Holy shit.
[info]luvthatdrtywata 29th-Dec-2011 02:42 pm (UTC)
i just wrote her the longest reply to her tweet about how hateful everyone was being. bitch please...idk why i am so upset about this, lol...

While people shouldn't have attacked you personally and I absolutely respect your right to have different political views than I, I can understand why people are frustrated. With so many followers it is your duty to be educated on such divisive topics before speaking out about them. Especially knowing your influence in the gay community and the amount of hateful vitriol often espoused towards them by conservative candidates. Additionally, when you showcase a lack of rationale as to these beliefs, it is hard to rectify our love for your music with our disappointment with your actions. I can only speak for myself when I say that I definitely feel disappointed in you.

You say you don't believe in the death penalty or racism, you believe in gay rights, etc, well anyone who took even a cursory glance at Ron Paul would know that supporting those ideals and supporting his candidacy are mutually exclusive. People can tell you that Ron Paul is not racist or homophobic because he himself didn't write some of the newsletter articles in question. However, they went out in his name, can you honestly tell me that he didn't even look at them? That's sheer naivety. You are a business woman and should know better. Furthermore, he has made some statements in the media, direct from his mouth that are just as hateful and I challenge you to look deeper into his political history before supporting him any further.

It's fine for you to have conservative ideals, although the more you speak, the more it seems like you are actually a Libertarian, not a Republican, as you wrote in your initial tweet. It's a common mistake that people need to be more cognoscente of. There are many intelligent individuals who are aligning themselves with a party that does not promote their belief system because they are more focused on the monetary aspects rather than the social issues.

People have to realize that liberal ideals are more personal than conservative ideals. We are easily offended because your believe systems personally offend us. When you tell us that we should care less about the homeless, the struggling parents who need government assistance, the schools that lack funds, the loving, happy gay couple denied their rights, the 16 year old who got pregnant because proper sexual education is not taught in school, the child with cancer whose parent has been laid off and is in need of free healthcare, it offends us and sometimes, yes, we get angry. It's not as simple as conservative beliefs. It's not just "I want to keep my money and despite our country being founded on the ideals of allowing people to have their own religious beliefs, I want prayer and creationism taught in public schools." Our beliefs are both personal and based on fact and sometimes we get angry when we see that, for most conservatives, their beliefs are based on just that, their beliefs.

Please don't mistake all of the support in these comments for validation of your beliefs, there are simply a lot of grossly uninformed people in this country. I think most of us who are upset with you are still fans, we just expected a lot more from someone we see as a strong, intelligent woman. We'll get over it, just as I hope you will get over your endorsement of Ron Paul.

I loathe the people who say, "But he didn't write" them excuse. His name is on it. He either read them or is unable to understand what is happening with his own business. If he can't handle a simple newsletter, why would I let him go near an entire country?!
