BIG American Horror Story News about S2 & Casting


With American Horror Story‘s first season resting in peace, Ryan Murphy is turning his attention to the show’s second act.


In a conference call with reporters on Thursday, the show’s cocreator confirmed that Season 2 will be “radically different” from Season 1. That means a new setting and a (mostly) new cast.

“The second season of the show will [feature] a brand new home or building to haunt,” Murphy said. “It will also have a new overriding theme.”

And in an unprecedented twist for an ongoing series, some current castmembers will return — but they’ll be playing new characters. (Murphy confirmed that current leads Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott will not be back, at least not as series regulars.) ”There will be familiar faces and some new faces,” says Murphy. “People that are coming back will be playing completely new characters… Getting to tell a different aspect of what an American horror story can be [every season] is fascinating.”

Murphy said he’s currently in talks with a few members of the Season 1 cast to return full time, but he declined to name names. An official announcement about the new ensemble and storyline will be announced in February. In the meantime, Murphy offered this tantalizing tease: “There’s a clue in the last three episodes where we say what the second season will be.”

Can Nora, Travis, Hugo, Constance, Tate, Violet, Larry (if he's not too busy with True Blood), Moira & Moira, Chad, Patrick please return Ryan Murphy you evil bastard. Really, it all depends on which cast members are returning on whether or not I'm going to tune into Season 2.

It's hard for me to see them not trying to contract Jessica, Evan & Taissa at this point since they're fan favorites.

ia. and now that we know it will be a new cast, i'm actually not upset about the finale anymore. it did feel like a series finale, tbh, with the harmons finding peace, etc. etc. yeah, other characters stories weren't ended, but those were the three main ones, and we got their ending. and constance and bb tate will obv. be back

um, this doesn't sound like it bodes well. the finale made is seem like at least constance will be back. ryan really lucked out with his current cast and i don't think he'll be that lucky again.

I could maybe be okay with this, except he left giant gaping holes open in the story he was telling. If this was his plan, he should have answered questions instead of making it seem like we would get them in future seasons. And make that finale way less weak since we're leaving that house and those characters.

yeah, but i think a lot of the fans, like myself, pay no attention to the writers/creators. i didn't even watch till mid-season. all i saw were advertisements and heard people talking about it. i don't think the gist of the fanbase (especially outside ontd/tumblr/twitter/people like my parents who just watch tv after work) know anything about what was said. so i think that's why it won't sit very well at first with a lot of the fans.

Murphy did say that some of the cast members will be returning (and that he's in negotiations with others, and would love Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, or Jessica Lange to return), but those that do will be playing entirely different characters/monsters/ghosts, and that the Harmon story is completely done. Like the season that just ended, the new season will contain period and true-crime elements.

... Not sure if want.

i really liked the finale last night. i saw some people hating, but it was bomb. i really like the direction it took, from seriously tormented family to ghost family with empathy for the living. the little splash of humor was nice, too.

idk i like how it's never what i anticipate. violet being dead was like WAT. the mom dying was like WAT. i thought the dynamic would be the dad and his dead family, but then he died! idk it's a good show that keeps me guessing.

i do like a lot of the main characters, but i'd rather the show continue to !!!!!!! me instead of get stale with the same ol shit. i'm glad it won't turn into a predictable show, with them running out new people from the house every episode, you know? i mean, where else can their story go?

I really liked it too. I was so pleased with what they did with Violet in the end. I'm hoping the family doesn't come back. They had a nice ending.

I actually really liked the episode too. It tied up the season well. I think my disappointment is from all of the things that Murphy said would be explained and weren't (like Ben's fascination with fire & his ties to the redheads & the twins).

I'm also wondering where the dog was for the past 6 episodes, but I'm glad she's alive and with Marcy now..? Idek.

i think i was just disappointed because i read that one post with all of the spoilers and got really excited. also i missed the memo that it wasn't actually going to be 90 minutes long.

I think the part that really disappointed me was that the show began to focus a lot on the history of the house and that was the most compelling part of the show for a lot of people. For them to go and focus on the Harmons and give them a perfect ending and ignoring the rest of the house was what threw me, but then I remembered that the story is about the Harmons and not the house (which is something that I honestly forgot about halfway through the season because the Harmons suck).

I see what Murphy's trying to do - he's trying to get the best of both worlds. He wants to keep the show going & fresh by having a new storyline, but he also wants to keep some of the current favorite cast members to keep some viewers. It's smart.

But still, this is just... weird. lol

idk if it's that anyone is stupid, i think a lot of people just love the characters so much that they don't want to see them go or weren't expecting to have this abrupt end to their fave. i mean, idg the big deal as long as the actors come back. i'm sure they'll love the new characters just as much as the old.
