The Flowers of War is the latest from Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero and The House of Flying Daggers). The film is set during the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. Based on a historical novel by Yan Geling, the film has Bale playing John Haufman, a mortician who apparently has come to town to bury the priest of a cathedral in Nanking. He meets a beautiful Chinese courtesan who helps him rescue a group of schoolgirls from a terrible fate at the hands of the Japanese. The Flowers of War is said to be the most expensive movie China has ever made, and all that money appears on the screen. That combined with the use of English (about 40% of the dialogue) made Flowers the natural selection for China’s official Oscar submission.
Speaking of which, The Flowers of War will sneak into theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco starting December 21 for an Oscar-qualifying run. A wide release will follow in early 2012.
They really went all out for this premiere!

I love how they're all dressed so nicely and he's just there in jeans lol.
oh it's the whole white savior thing again. Sad that even Asian directors have to resort to it.
If you looked up actual events, a handful of white foreigners was able to save hundreds of thousands of Chinese folks during the Rape of Nanking, because they were white. But after the war was over, not many great things happened to these heroes. I think the Chinese from Nanking always felt unfortunate that these foreigners were never properly honored and awarded while they were still alive. This movie is telling that story, along with a few Chinese women who made a difference. I don't see why having a White guy in there, when it actually happened, would be a bad thing.
Bale's been looking hot as fuck lately.
The lady is so pretty with her qipao!

Pretty much the same depressing case when my TA told us where in Japan she's from (Hiroshima). They probably still have living family members who experienced those awful events.
