Katy Perry – The Queen of Make Up?

If Katy Perry has one major achievement beyond her music, it must certainly be putting women at ease, on a global scale, for wearing tonnes of makeup. We first came across it with her bright (dare we say gaudy) nails on her The One of The Boys artwork (to get some Katy Perry style inspiration though check out this showcase of nail art – and while you’re at it this site also has a good collection of updos) which seemed to put her foundation in context. Soon enough we forgot that she’s hiding behind half an inch of war paint.

Then we were suddenly snapped out of it when Russell Brand posted the quickly deleted photo of her in her natural state.

Her recent appearance on X Factor too gave us a bit of a shock. Her pink hair couldn’t take away from the overdone foundation even by the standards of the Saturday night preening fest. The thing is though, she does it so bloody ruddy well. Perhaps if you saw her in a club you might be surprised when the lights came up at the end of the night, but this is showbiz and we reckon she consistently pulls it out the bag.

So here’s out top ten list of who overdoes the makeup to perfection in pop:

Katy Perry
Lady Gaga – and we’re not talking about her costumes, we mean when she’s looking ‘natural’.
JLS – these boys don’t mind being touched up.
Gwen Stefani – she’s been rocking the same make up since the early 90s.
Rihanna – check out the Shy Ronnie video to see how it should be done.
JLO – She’s like Dorain Gray.
Cher Lloyd – OK we’re not sure this is a good look, but we’ve become accustomed to her face.
Nicola Roberts – She’s always on any list we do.
Avril Lavigne – A pioneer of the faux emo look.
Christina Aguilera – Have you seen Burlesque?
If you have any further suggestions then let us know.

I know anyone with a major close up like this is going to look like shit, but though I loathe her, I love how spackled she looks and how she actually has pores.
popartpistol 6th-Dec-2011 08:57 am (UTC)
Yikes, that's unflattering.

quidscipio 6th-Dec-2011 09:08 am (UTC)
didn't she used to have really bad skin? i remember reading something like that, and that's why she piles on the makeup
sillycucumber 6th-Dec-2011 12:46 pm (UTC)
Yeah, apparently she has bad acne scarring.
sirlolsworthy 6th-Dec-2011 11:51 am (UTC)

courtkneee1 6th-Dec-2011 09:32 am (UTC)

missblankenship 6th-Dec-2011 09:34 am (UTC)
I need a new eyeliner! Recs?
courtkneee1 6th-Dec-2011 09:41 am (UTC)
i've got the mac fluidline and it's so great but i haven't tried any others (except for this japanese brand one which hurt my eyes).
fashi0nbaby 6th-Dec-2011 09:45 am (UTC)
I just use the regular sephora brand cream/gel liner. it works great

for a pen/liquid liner i use physicians formula eye booster 2-in-1 lash boosting eyeliner + serum! it works great and the serum is working i think. but i mainly love its tip. it goes on like a dream
popartpistol 6th-Dec-2011 10:00 am (UTC)
The inventor of gel liner should win some sort of globally recognised award. Like the Nobel Prize for Chemistry or an Oscar.
quidscipio 6th-Dec-2011 09:47 am (UTC)
what should i buy from sephora? i have a coupon and dammit i can't pass it up even though i don't *need* anything. what doooo?! i might buy a backup of nars zulu and maybe some jack black lip balm...what other frivolous thing should i consider? DAMMIT SEPHORA YOU ALREADY SUCKED ME DRY FROM THE FF SALE AND THE VIB SALE
nailyoubackup 6th-Dec-2011 09:54 am (UTC)
OMG I feel ya. My coupon expires on the 12th and I'm going back to the mall tomorrow (to exchange out some boots from steve madden because fuckers probably gave me a display pair) and I neeed to buy a perfume. Probably Gucci Guilty
nailyoubackup My makeup routine (when I wear makeup)6th-Dec-2011 09:53 am (UTC)
After washing my face with Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub, I use witch hazel toner then moisturize with Aveeno Positively Radiant (thinking of switching to something else for combination skin because this one annoys me with the little sparkles). I also try to apply Rosebud Salve on my lips right after I scrub them a little.

Makeup:
-Smashbox PhotoFinish Primer
-MUFE HD Foundation
-Revlon ColorStay concealer (considering buying a cream concealer palette)
-MUFE HD Microfinish Powder
-Smashbox Browtech trio
-Urban Decay Primer Potion
-Mac eyeshadow in Tete-a-Tint
-Maybelline Eyestudio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner in Blackest Black
-Either Rimmel Glam'eyes mascara or Maybelline Falsies mascara. Or both.
-Nars Laguna bronzer (I need to find a different bronzer. Suggestions?)
-Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick in Warm Me Up for everyday whatever lipcolor. Tarte Lipsurgence Matte Fiery for red lips.

Yeah, that's a lot of makeup. But I'm really self-conscious and also a perfectionist so...bummer

popartpistol Re: My makeup routine (when I wear makeup)6th-Dec-2011 10:02 am (UTC)
Tell me more about the Smashbox Browtech trio...I've tried powder on it's own and it looks like smudged eyeshadow. The Smashbox one has a gel/wax too, right?
nailyoubackup Re: My makeup routine (when I wear makeup)6th-Dec-2011 10:08 am (UTC)
yup a setting wax. honestly, you can use any eyeshadow as a brow powder but I bought it because I was in a rush. I apply with an angled liner brush then dab the wax on with my fingers. if im going for a more dramatic defined look, i mix the powder with a bit of the wax on the back of my hand then apply with the brush.
fashi0nbaby Re: My makeup routine (when I wear makeup)6th-Dec-2011 10:11 am (UTC)

I'm a m/u artist. It's a really fun job. I recently re-created one of my fave looks of this year. Emma Watson's gold leaf eyemakeup

I loved this look on Emma.
popartpistol 6th-Dec-2011 11:37 am (UTC)
Wow, you did an incredible job!
quidscipio 6th-Dec-2011 12:35 pm (UTC)
the second i saw the gold leaf at the corner of your eye, without even reading your comment i went omg emma watson makeup! haha, i spend too much time on ontd or something. your version is gorgeous though, what brown did you use right above the crease?
rachelbojangles 6th-Dec-2011 08:34 pm (UTC)
MAC Paintpot in Blackground all over the lid, then MAC Bronze e/s on the lid and crease. That's what made the cool brown shade. The black base really makes it stand out. NYX gold pearl pigment on the inner corner, MAC Blacktrack gel liner on the waterline and smudged all along the upper lashline to make it super dark, then bits of gold leaf glued on with Duo and black mascara.
marywebgirl 6th-Dec-2011 05:48 pm (UTC)
I think yours looks better!
st00pidness 6th-Dec-2011 07:03 pm (UTC)

my mum has REALLY thin and short eyelashes, what mascara could I buy her for christmas?
caacac 6th-Dec-2011 05:23 pm (UTC)
So do I, and I have used the red and white one from Loreal (L'oreal Double Extend Mascara) for yeaaars. I've tried anything from Diorshow to Lancome, but not a single mascara has made my lashes as long and thick as that one. Maybelline Colossal and Falsies are supposed to be great as well.
tube_fiend 8th-Dec-2011 05:18 am (UTC)
This may be too much "work" for your mom but as a fellow, short eyelash gal, I consider lash dye to be my savior (well, before Latisse came along...).

http://www.amazon.com/Roux-Lash-Brow-Tint-Black/dp/B000BPMB2Y

That's not the one I use (I prefer 1000hr lash dye, but you have to buy it from some random Aussie site, so not as easy for a first time try). This one should work fine.

Anyway, the problem is, with short lashes, there's only so much mascara can do. You're just never going to achieve those insanely dramatic lashes. Those are on people using the same mascara on their naturally long lashes! So what's more important to a short lash gal is trying to look like what those naturally long lashed people look like on a daily basis. Long lashes make difference. You eyes seem brighter, more open, prettier. And lash dye gives you that, 24/7. Because it's a dye, it coats your lashes, making them marginally thicker. Because all lashes are white at the tips, it dyes the white tip, making your lashes look as long as they truly are. It's really amazing to wake up, look in the mirror, and SEE lashes on your eyes. Plus you can apply mascara during the day as well!

Anyway, pitch over. Maybe get your mom a gift certificate to try it at a salon? It's cheap, around $15. But given that it lasts 2-4 weeks, it's MUCH cheaper to do it at home, if she decides she loves it.
courtkneee1 6th-Dec-2011 11:39 am (UTC)
omg i wish this post weren't dead

what do people think of orange lipstick
courtkneee1 7th-Dec-2011 12:41 am (UTC)
cool thanks!!! i just bought the chanel exotic and it's pretty matte and doesn't stand out too much. i'm really excited about it.
lcacbc 6th-Dec-2011 11:47 am (UTC)
Fuck, late for a beauty post!

I always put a lot of makeup on - eyeliner, mascara, NEVER without foundation, blush, lipstick, but I do try to go for a natural look. No panda eyes or bright red lipstick. It takes me ages, and then my sisters always goes, 'you don't look any different.' <__< I've been trying to find a foundation that doesn't look like I've caked it on, but I've yet to find one. Any suggestions I can get in the UK?
sirlolsworthy 6th-Dec-2011 11:53 am (UTC)
bleh, missed a beauty post, I needed advice.
I know fuck all about make-up and how to wear it. I'm almost 30, it's embarrassing.
kamottle 6th-Dec-2011 01:31 pm (UTC)
Don't be embarrassed! What did you want to learn?
flawlessa 6th-Dec-2011 01:44 pm (UTC)
I learnt everything I know about makeup from youtube. There are loads of good teachers out there: pixowoos, panacea81, kandeejohnsoon, frmheadtotoe, andreaschoice and xsparkage are all good. I really like bubzbeauty too. Hope that helps! :)

Girl I didn't start wearing makeup until I was about 26. I'm almost 30 now and it's taken me a few years to experiment and learn what works best for me. My main problem was my oily skin and how it made foundation and eyeshadow nearly impossible for me to wear. Now I know the right foundation plus the right primers (face and eyes) to wear, and ta-da! I work it.
acharmedlife 6th-Dec-2011 11:15 pm (UTC)
I learned about make-up from youtube just this year. I am 26. I just watched a shit ton of videos until I got confident enough to try stuff out.

My favourite youtube channels to watch are: makeupgeektv, pixiwoo, lisaeldridgedotcom, and sometimes I watch Michelle Phan, but she doesn't make thorough videos anymore.
leitao 6th-Dec-2011 12:09 pm (UTC)
Yay makeup post! :D

Has anyone here tried BB creams? I keep hearing about them . . . they're pretty popular in Asia right now.
marywebgirl 6th-Dec-2011 05:50 pm (UTC)
I've tried a couple. I'm not noticing any magical effects on my skin, but they work well enough. Better coverage than a tinted moisturizer.
leitao 6th-Dec-2011 09:45 pm (UTC)
What brand did you buy? And does it have a gray hue (I hear that's a problem for some of the BB creams out there)? XD I'm tempted to try some out . . .
crazygurl230 6th-Dec-2011 08:49 pm (UTC)
I can't find one that isn't pale pale pale :(
meiliguniang 7th-Dec-2011 01:48 am (UTC)
what's a BB cream?
crazyventures 7th-Dec-2011 02:44 am (UTC)
I use the Skin79 bb cream in the hot pink bottle. It does have a grayish cast at first but it oxidizes after a few minutes
