POWERFUL POST! Every image is a hit to the stomach.
[info]bardotlashes 4th-Dec-2011 03:42 pm (UTC)
I was visiting my parents in Phoenix the night that happened. I was watching a movie and remember saying, "Wow, it sounds like it's really windy out there." The next morning, I looked outside and said, "Shit, why is there so much dust in the pool?" So I'm sure that other people had more dramatic experiences, but it was pretty underwhelming for me.
[info]nastyposition 4th-Dec-2011 06:35 pm (UTC)
Did you hear about any deaths or incidents afterwards?
[info]xxcrazyjewxx 4th-Dec-2011 04:25 pm (UTC)
Ehh, just a normal Arizona dust storm. Honestly, looks crazier than it was. We're used to it here.
[info]honesttoblog 4th-Dec-2011 05:16 pm (UTC)
Meh. It actually wasn't that bad. We get dust storms here in Phoenix alot like that. The wind wasn't even that strong. Everything did get covered in more dust than usual, which was a pain in the ass.
[info]buffy_usa 4th-Dec-2011 05:56 pm (UTC)
omg + amazing photo

i thought all these photos were really very powerful

so many emotions, can't believe that was all in one year
[info]__i_rule 4th-Dec-2011 06:45 pm (UTC)
i live 2 miles to the left of this pic, haha
[info]stuckmodebabe 4th-Dec-2011 06:47 pm (UTC)
I was scared shitless when I saw it coming, TBH
[info]cocopora 4th-Dec-2011 07:26 pm (UTC)
it looks a lot more daunting than it really was, but this picture is pretty terrifying.
[info]paupiedequincey 4th-Dec-2011 08:07 pm (UTC)
That's kindof what 9/11 felt like from downtown Manhattan.. although it was more liks snaking through buildings and shit chasing me.
[info]gorlfriend 4th-Dec-2011 08:35 pm (UTC)
i fucking love photography.
[info]winter_lace 4th-Dec-2011 10:24 pm (UTC)
I've watched a red dust storm roll in once. Legit looks like the world is going to end.
[info]jcslilprincess 5th-Dec-2011 06:16 am (UTC)
That happened like, 4 times this summer. Its crazy to see it roll in, but its a pain in the ass more than anything.
[info]boomstick 5th-Dec-2011 07:01 pm (UTC)
Pants shat.
[info]beatlesluv 5th-Dec-2011 07:49 pm (UTC)

[info]faeriegodfag 5th-Dec-2011 10:26 pm (UTC)
I live in Lubbock, and I shit you not, this was the view from my balcony when the sandstorm hits.

[info]grammaire 4th-Dec-2011 01:14 pm (UTC)
God, half of these things seem like a lifetime away.
[info]glowing_dragon 4th-Dec-2011 11:47 pm (UTC)
I know, right? Still powerful, though.
[info]jay_oats 5th-Dec-2011 07:01 pm (UTC)

[info]nastyposition 4th-Dec-2011 01:15 pm (UTC)
all of these are terrible, this one made me teary eyed ;__;

[info]tink_1326 4th-Dec-2011 04:52 pm (UTC)
That picture was always my response to people bitching about how "overhyped" Irene was. Oh yeah? Tell that to these people.
[info]skay210 4th-Dec-2011 05:05 pm (UTC)
It was in some places, like NYC where I live. Better safe than sorry though.
[info]tkylem 4th-Dec-2011 06:55 pm (UTC)
It was definitely hyped in NYC but we would have been fucked if it hit us like it hit Jersey... we got lucky imo.
[info]boomstick 5th-Dec-2011 07:02 pm (UTC)
I was fortunate enough to live in the pocket where it was overhyped, but I still lost power for a week. Just a few hours upstate, some people lost literally everything. My friend knew a woman who was two weeks away from giving birth and her entire fucking house basically washed away.
[info]eyeninetyfive 4th-Dec-2011 06:24 pm (UTC)
this was the least powerful photo out of the whole bunch tbh
[info]muzik_love 4th-Dec-2011 06:42 pm (UTC)
thats really sad. I used to work in Nags Head and I know exactly where that is. Whats even sadder about it is, at the beginning of the summer there was this huuuuuuge forest fire the next town over from nags head. it lasted for months and they couldnt get control of it. I remember people saying things like "only a hurricane can help us get this fire under control".
[info]nicholasdee 4th-Dec-2011 07:01 pm (UTC)
well, to make you feel better, the description made it sound like a vacation home which makes it a lot less traumatic than the people who lost their homes in the tornados.
[info]nicholasdee 4th-Dec-2011 07:02 pm (UTC)
well, to make you feel better, the description made it sound like a vacation home which makes it a lot less traumatic than the people who lost their homes in the tornados.
[info]spoiled_water 4th-Dec-2011 01:15 pm (UTC)
God. most of these photos just confirm that overall 2011 was a pretty shitty year.

The Puyehue volcano shot is incredible.
[info]blancapslove 4th-Dec-2011 01:17 pm (UTC)
2012 is coming
[info]winniechili 4th-Dec-2011 01:18 pm (UTC)
Every year is a shitty year if you put together a bunch of depressing pictures.
[info]krzg 4th-Dec-2011 01:39 pm (UTC)
I know! When you look at it all compiled like that. Damn :S
[info]minyquai 4th-Dec-2011 04:44 pm (UTC)
I know people say every year was shitty, but really? I feel like this one was really REALLY bad, so much HUUUUUUUUUGE BAD STUFF happened D:
[info]cupkate 4th-Dec-2011 11:47 pm (UTC)
Arab spring, man. The Arab "spring" photos are so inspiring to me. The whole world is going to change because of it.
[info]anniemann101 5th-Dec-2011 08:09 am (UTC)
SO DAMN TRUE. OMG!

ths is late but i was secretely thinkig all of these pics are depressing and intense. not one pic in this "final collection" of the year is a happy, joyful carefree one. this makes me contemplate life as an adult. i refuse to be this intense through out my life even if bad news comes my way
[info]blancapslove 4th-Dec-2011 01:17 pm (UTC)
k amy winehouse's death was v sad for me, but idg suddenly EVERYONE loves and listens to her.... and i can backtrack where they say awful shit about amy
[info]boringlittletit 4th-Dec-2011 01:30 pm (UTC)
I agree.
[info]my_stitching 4th-Dec-2011 01:30 pm (UTC)
I don't get why people would leave glasses and bottles of booze in memorium for her. She died because of alcoholism.
[info]prawn_toast 4th-Dec-2011 01:36 pm (UTC)
ikr it would be like people leaving model cars around princess diana's memorial thing
[info]noirnoise 4th-Dec-2011 01:43 pm (UTC)
ikr. it's so disrespectful.
[info]milkradio 4th-Dec-2011 01:51 pm (UTC)
ia, idg that at all
[info]krzg 4th-Dec-2011 01:51 pm (UTC)
So disgusting
[info]raptureraptor 4th-Dec-2011 02:43 pm (UTC)
Yeah that's really disturbing.
[info]loveumbrella 4th-Dec-2011 01:35 pm (UTC)
Well, the same happened with MJ.
[info]krzg 4th-Dec-2011 01:40 pm (UTC)
Were you frozen in time? It happens to every artist that passes away when they have a troubled past. All of them get this treatment. It's nothing new tbh
[info]loosedefense 4th-Dec-2011 01:42 pm (UTC)
see, i don't feel that, from what i see it was going that way for a couple of months and then everyone got over it because amy wasn't that big of a star anyway and transferred all their remaining sympathy for female British singers into sales for 'Rolling In The Deep'.
[info]hotcement 4th-Dec-2011 02:41 pm (UTC)
ia. i don't think hers should even be included in here.
[info]ugly_jacket 4th-Dec-2011 03:46 pm (UTC)
yeah if you go back into the amy winehouse tag pre death..... mmhmmmm
[info]misscrystal 4th-Dec-2011 05:46 pm (UTC)
I never got the fuss about her. Her death hasn't changed that for me.
[info]mistyraven 4th-Dec-2011 06:03 pm (UTC)
I will admit I was one of the people who didn't give a shit about her until her death because the only song of hers I'd heard was "rehab" and it was eh. Then when she died people kept on going on about what an amazing voice she had, and so i gave her music a try, and they were right. Sad it took her death for me to actually listen to her music though :/
[info]muzik_love 4th-Dec-2011 06:46 pm (UTC)
I dont know...when amy was at her worst i remember people saying "omg trainwreck. MAKE A NEW ALBUM!" so i mean...yeah they acknowledged her messiness but also showed their love in the same breath. I didn't frequent ontd then though. lol thats probably why i didnt see all the hate.
[info]oneloveunited 6th-Dec-2011 05:32 am (UTC)
People just go with the crowd.

"Oh, everyone's saying Amy is a drug addict? I AGREE!"

"Oh, everyone's saying how amazing she was? I AGREE"
[info]rachaelwsz 4th-Dec-2011 01:17 pm (UTC)
i just saw these at fb. dayum
[info]grammaire 4th-Dec-2011 01:18 pm (UTC)
And as evidenced by half of these photographs, things are changing in this world. Both nature and society have reached their limit. 2012 won't be the end of the world, but I think it's gonna signal a shift in something.
[info]jackiemust_die 4th-Dec-2011 01:22 pm (UTC)

[info]loganx2 4th-Dec-2011 01:35 pm (UTC)
This should be the photo shown to everyone who wants the US to stop giving aid to other countries. Yeah the economy is shit, but how can we not help.
[info]donnanoble 4th-Dec-2011 01:41 pm (UTC)
ugh it makes me sick that the famine in the Horn of Africa hardly gets any media coverage anymore while CHILDREN are starving to death by the thousands.
[info]raunchyb 4th-Dec-2011 02:43 pm (UTC)
After a few months in the hospital, he gained weight and is doing much better. Here's an article with pictures.

Unfortunately, I'm sure there are plenty of other children that don't receive the help they need.
[info]thethirdjournal 4th-Dec-2011 04:34 pm (UTC)
This is the imagine that people should have in mind when they bitch about aid to impoverished nations.
[info]minyquai 4th-Dec-2011 04:45 pm (UTC)

Out of all the pics, this one made me stop the longest. I was happy to hear the baby lived.
[info]carrie9142 4th-Dec-2011 09:40 pm (UTC)
poor baby. I'm glad he survived and is now all chubby and wonderful. Unfortunately, malnutrition like that in infancy often has long term health complications. Not to be all Debbie Downer, but just b/c he has gained weight now doesn't mean he is just healthy now and forever.
[info]hersheejess 4th-Dec-2011 01:18 pm (UTC)
The dog sleeping by the casket gets me every damn time :(
[info]jamimo 4th-Dec-2011 01:20 pm (UTC)

[info]x_steffi_x 4th-Dec-2011 01:20 pm (UTC)

[info]hotcement 4th-Dec-2011 02:43 pm (UTC)

[info]dr_boop_boop 4th-Dec-2011 03:16 pm (UTC)

[info]boomstick 5th-Dec-2011 07:07 pm (UTC)
And how her husband's friend stood watch over her all fucking night...omg. When I first saw it I was skeptical over the backstory (internet's burned me in the past!) but when I found out it was true I was all sorts of weepy.
[info]hotcement 4th-Dec-2011 02:42 pm (UTC)
i saw a worse one on imgur, but i think it's from a couple of years ago. it's a woman in a sleeping bag laying in front of a casket with only a laptop as light, and there's a marine standing next to her. the caption said she was playing her husband's favorite songs for him before they buried him :'(

and now i'm crying just thinking about it :''(

[info]shortliljackers 4th-Dec-2011 05:16 pm (UTC)

So many great images but the dog next to the casket made me tear up and the baby scared the shit out of me as I was scrolling past. Glad he's okay.

The woman(35) is pretty badass too.
[info]boringlittletit 4th-Dec-2011 01:20 pm (UTC)
The picture of the Navy Seal's dog laying by his casket caused me to burst into tears.

What a great, moving post. Thank you OP.

[info]spoiled_water 4th-Dec-2011 01:26 pm (UTC)
I always wonder what has to be going through a person's mind for them to decide to do something like that. Sad.
[info]scared_money 4th-Dec-2011 01:34 pm (UTC)
she looks at peace tho. like I thought she was already dead.
[info]polekatz 4th-Dec-2011 04:35 pm (UTC)
"survive" basically.
[info]hierarchia 4th-Dec-2011 08:13 pm (UTC)
to be honest, probably nothing much, and i'm not trying to be sarcastic. if someone is that distressed to the point of killing themselves, their last moments would actually, probably, be almost without feeling or really thinking, just a drive that insists they have to do this one thing to escape it.

but this is more of an assumption. can't speak for everyone.
[info]leopard_legs 4th-Dec-2011 01:38 pm (UTC)
it really is

this is my favorite of the bunch tbh. I can't believe that man managed to catch her, it's incredible.

I have no idea, but I tear up every single time I see this picture. It's just so sad, and you can just see that she is in despair.

I've read different back stories about why she jumped - like one story said her SO left her the day of the wedding, other stories say he left her a week before the wedding - but either way, I really feel horrible for her and the shame she felt. I hope she got the help she needed.

I agree this picture is sad but I also think it signifys a kind of hope.
