Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, To Open Vegan Restaurant

Celebrity vegan couple Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are planning to open a vegan restaurant, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.
Along with singer Chrissie Hynde and producer Steve Bing, the pair will be investing in an animal-product-free eating establishment in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley.

DeGeneres A Passionate Animal Activist
DeGeneres is well known for her animal activism. She was the spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary’s annual Adopt A Turkey Project last year.  This is a program where, for a onetime $30 donation, anyone can sponsor a turkey.  In return, you receive a certificate with a color photo of your adopted friend.
And it turns out that she’ll be back again next month to serve as Farm Sanctuary’s spokesperson, inviting everyone to save, not eat, a turkey this Thanksgiving season.
Then there’s her new website,  Going Vegan with Ellen, launched in August, that includes recipes, frequently asked questions, resources and info on celebrities who have gone vegan.
What Will The New Restaurant Look Like?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, vegan chef Tal Ronnen will do the menu. Ronnen catered the couple’s vegan wedding and is also known for preparing meals for a 21-day vegan cleanse undertaken by Oprah Winfrey in 2008.  And designer Waldo Fernandez, who has created interiors for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, will be creating the space.
No word yet on what type of pricing to expect!

I've done the vegan thing (I probably will again), but I feel like, with Portia's history, it's probably not the safest thing for her.

Other than that, good for them.
xaristotlex 31st-Oct-2011 11:48 am (UTC)
Oh, awesome! I hope this isn't too expensive; I'll be sure to check it out if it isn't.

"How's your yeast?"

"Very yeasty"
vonlisbon 31st-Oct-2011 12:56 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I wonder how various vegans stand on products made with bacteria or fungus. I mean, yeast is a living thing, but so are bacteria. And tons of food that contain zero animal products contain or used some sort of bacteria in the process.
tartpants 31st-Oct-2011 01:12 pm (UTC)
I've never heard of vegans having a problem with bacteria or fungus. In fact, I know quite a few of them that are fine with eating oysters because oysters have no central nervous system and don't feel pain/have thoughts. A lot of them eat nutritional yeast for B-vitamins, too (which are hard to get enough of on a vegan diet).

They won't eat food that leads to animal exploitation and pain, or is clearly derived from an animal source. It's not about whether or not it's a "living thing."
