Taylor Swift Donates 6,000 Books To Struggling Library

Taylor Swift wants children in the Pennsylvania city of Reading to hit the books — and she's made that easier by giving 6,000 volumes to the local library.

Librarians unveiled the donation from the Grammy-winning country singer Thursday. Swift grew up in nearby Wyomissing and wasn't able to attend the event.

Swift partnered with publisher Scholastic Inc. to donate the books for children and young adults. The titles were chosen by local librarians.
Reading is a struggling city about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Swift's representatives told library officials she wanted to help economically troubled libraries.

Librarians say Swift's books will be marked with a white star on the spine and a sticker inside. They say they hope Swift's popularity will motivate more children and teens to read.

Yaaaaay, this makes me happy.

Book series I read as a kid:
Sweet Valley (Twins & High)
Animorphs
Boxcar Children
Tamora Pierce (still read, tbh)
Fear Street

My sister read the Babbysitter's Club, my mom read Nancy Drew. :) I hope a bunch of these were included, because they're the sort of things that get kids reading on the regular.
janeeyre 24th-Oct-2011 06:46 pm (UTC)
I read everything, except sweet valley.

nancy drew was so fierce!
vanishingbee 24th-Oct-2011 06:47 pm (UTC)
IMO Sweet Valley would even still make the perfect high school show, because it was just ENDLESS RIDICULOUS DRAMA. Also sometimes serial killers who stalked one or both of the girls. :D
floristry 24th-Oct-2011 06:51 pm (UTC)
I loved Sweet Valley Twins and (lol) The Boyfriend Club.
Also, Anastasia Krupnik, hbic

Mandy
A Little Princess
The Outsiders
The Babysitters Club (Stacey was my fave)
V.C. Andrews trash

hammersxstrings 24th-Oct-2011 07:46 pm (UTC)
loved Animorphs, Sweet Valley, and FEAR STREET. oh man, the saga that went back to Salem, was amazing.

aprettywastex3 24th-Oct-2011 07:00 pm (UTC)
Everybody hates 2 & 3 but tbh 2 is my favourite. And while 3 is kind of a clusterfuck at times, I really liked the ending, it seemed very realistic given the circumstances.
robertsbox_xo 24th-Oct-2011 07:02 pm (UTC)
2 isn't as good but i still liked it. 3 was a giant clusterfuck.
zutxalors 24th-Oct-2011 07:02 pm (UTC)
Peeta doesn't leave.

After the first read, the second book was my favorite. It was so badass, and everything that happened, I thought, was unexpected. The third book is pretty good, too. It's pretty political, and I can't tell you why I love it so much without giving out the ending, haha.

But I don't know how I'm going to like it after a second read. After the first read, I loved Gale, hated Peeta, Prim was OK, and the mom was a terrible and weak person, but now that I'm reading it the second time, I'm liking Peeta a lot more and I'm hating Gale.
magnolianight 24th-Oct-2011 07:02 pm (UTC)
Read them! They have a different light than the first one, and thats why a lot of people don't like them. The third is not as fluid, but a good conclusion.

I read the first one and I was biding on the second one on ebay and I lost:( The first book is really good! I couldn't put it down.

I think this comment only makes sense if she's using her name to get kids to read by having the book published with her name on it. She's just donating books to a library that needed some new books.
tlcspice 24th-Oct-2011 07:46 pm (UTC)
as long as they are reading, it shouldn't matter to you.
lokiyan 24th-Oct-2011 09:50 pm (UTC)

Marking the books she donated isn't going to motivate kids to read. It's going to motivate crazy fans to steal.

Maybe they will read it after? picking up a book is the first step.
