He's definitely trying to protect them from being brutally raped/murdered but it seems like there's an obligatory romance added just for the sake of romance. Bleh.
The film is set in 1937 in Nanjing, China during the Nanking Massacre, at the time of the Second Sino-Japanese War. A group of escapees, finding sanctuary in a Church compound, risk their lives as they struggle to survive the plight and persecution brought on by the violent invasion of the city. Christian Bale portrays John Magee, an American priest who helps a number of Chinese escape certain death.

Here is a better synopsis. Bale isn't a priest, he pretends to be in the movie:
"THE FLOWERS OF WAR will center on a foreign mortician who comes to China in 1937 to bury a priest. He has the misfortune of being there just as Japanese forces are taking over the capital and epic battles rage all around him. The late priest’s cathedral was also a school for girls in which the mortician must now pose as a priest to avoid incarceration by the advancing Japanese army. But he is forced to take a more active role in the conflict when the soldiers demand the use of the young female students as “entertainment” for their troops."
OMG the Nanjing massacre :X. So fucked up that even the Nazis were disgusted. This film will probably be great but I don't know if I can watch it. What the Japanese did was beyond inhuman. It's part of the reason why I side-eye weaboos who saw Japan is a flawfree country (along with xenophobia, conformist mentality, etc.)
FYI: to anyone who wants to google the Nanjing Massacre, BE CAREFUL. The pictures are DISTURBING ENOUGH to give you nightmares, even on a strict Google safesearch.
Oh God, I couldn't sleep that night after reading the wiki article. And they got away with it too, because it was deemed as "academic" or some sort of shit? I can't go back to the wiki article and check.
Oh and since I'm in an angry mood now, what pisses me off is how Japan NEVER acknowledges any of this. Anyone who worships Japan as a country is ignorant and fucking deluded. I cannot deal with the weaboos who say "World War 2 wasn't Japan's fault/as bad as the Nazis/etc". SMH.
Hyde. It's five or so years ago now, but in an MC for one of his solo concerts he basically said how awesomely peaceful and great Japan was vs the US who are always making wars and such. While the latter may be true, you can't possibly hold Japan up as a peaceful nation with this crap in their not-so-ancient history that they don't even fully acknowledge to this day. Pissed me off.
I actually used to be a fan too, but I can't forgive that kind of ignorance.
Damn it, it looks like Zhang Yimou is trying too hard to appeal to the international market again. Between this shitty poster and the obligatory romance added, bleh. I hope he can go back to the brilliance of his old films - 'Raise the Red Lantern' is one of my fav films of all time.
i'm taking this less seriously coz they tried to add a love story with Bale (based on the trailer)... and then the weird ass smiley faces he made was not necessary for the trailer coz it was so out of context
If you're confused about the movie here is what it's about:

btw I love your icon, his facial expressions in AP deserved an Oscar
seriously I have no hope for the academy, except they did right by him when they gave him an award for the Fighter. Now he just needs another Oscar for best Actor
If you read the actual synopsis the story makes more sense. Anyway IDC if it sucks because it has a sex scene with Bale and that's all I needed to convince me.
Does CBale play a man of God, trying to protect the girls; or, is he pimping them out?
