Barack Obama Doesn't Like His Daughters Watching the Kardashians, Says Michelle

We live in a Kardashian nation, but President Barack Obama isn't exactly a fan of reality TV's royal family! First Lady Michelle Obama tells iVillage that her hubby, 50, doesn't like Sasha, 10, and Malia, 13, keeping up with Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian's antics on the boob tube.

Michelle, 47, says that like most parents, she and Barack regulate how much TV their daughters watch and what they're allowed to see. "Barack really thinks some of the Kardashians -- when they watch that stuff -- he doesn't like that as much," she told iVillage.

"But I sort of feel like if we're talking about it, and I'm more concerned with how they take it in -- what did you learn when you watched that," Michelle explained. "And if they're learning the right lessons, like, that was crazy, then I'm like, okay."

While the Kardashian family is known for their big spending (Kim purchased a $325,000 Ferrari earlier this month), their upbringing wasn't entirely different from Sasha and Malia's. Michelle tells iVillage she doesn't want her girls raised as "little princesses."

"They have to make their own beds, to clean up their rooms," she says. "Sasha has started doing the laundry. Malia was supposed to be doing it but [Sasha] is really into laundry."

actxappalledx 20th-Oct-2011 12:09 am (UTC)
admittedly, i've never seen a full episode, but of the few minutes i've caught here and there, their mother is awful as well, as well as super annoying (repeatedly trying to push the one with a kid to marry her bf, not that the piece of paper is going to make any difference to their relationship), and I can sorta see why they would get fed up with her and talk to her like that
soul_amazinn 20th-Oct-2011 12:17 am (UTC)
ia but I think part of that is Kris' fault. She seems like she tries too much to be their friend. They only do it because she allows them to.
sugary_placenta 20th-Oct-2011 12:38 am (UTC)
Yeah, it's like none of them have a sense of "this is my mother/I'm their mother" and they shouldn't speak to her a certain way. Like, I get having a friendly relationship with your mother, I have one when she isn't annoying me/being crazy, but I also know she's my mother and there are certain ways I just don't treat her or things I just don't say.
ch33rylips 20th-Oct-2011 12:50 am (UTC)
Kris 10% Jenner gets what she deserves.

adorealire 20th-Oct-2011 12:01 am (UTC)
I know what you mean. Not to say that you shouldn't be monitoring what your kids are watching/doing and such, but kids aren't completley stupid. Kids are actually pretty smart. My sister is 12, and she knows that what's right or wrong. She watches Kardasians, Jersey Shore(It's her favourite show -.-), but she's very smart and knows she shouldn't be copying what they're doing.

It really does depend on the child though. Some or just merely more mature than others.
alzzers 20th-Oct-2011 12:12 am (UTC)
Your sister, at 12, might watch Jersey Shore and know that acting that way is wrong, but eventually she'll go to college and feel that that's what young adulthood is "supposed" to look like. I'm not saying it's brainwashing her, but it does send a message of what's appropriate.

Maybe she's the exception, but the majority of tweens want to mimic that crap.
thewhowhatwhats 20th-Oct-2011 12:20 am (UTC)
She's still being socialized by those shows.
sparklepixie 20th-Oct-2011 12:20 am (UTC)
some kids are more impressionable than others. I wanted to imitate sooo many thing I'd watched on tv lol
cabernet 20th-Oct-2011 12:30 am (UTC)
No, seriously. Especially with the bullshit on TV nowadays. I'd fucking never let my young kids have their way with the TV and especially not the whole goddamn internet. I know what I was doing on the internet when I was like 11 and I don't want my kids seeing the same stupid shit.
sugary_placenta 20th-Oct-2011 12:42 am (UTC)
IA. I started watching Real World/Road Rules when I was 10 and I never looked at any of those people as role models.
phnix_daft_mode 20th-Oct-2011 02:55 am (UTC)
Lol @ everyone disagreeing with you. For the record, I think it depends on the kid. Some of them are really impressionable and would be better off not being exposed to those programs. Other kids are oddly not affected by it. When I was around 9, maybe 10 or 11, I used to watch a lot of MTV like Real World, Road Rules Challanges, etc. Do I applaud my mom for letting me watch those shows? Not at all. But honestly, it didn't really influence me much. I did think their lives were cool and fun but in the back of my head, I always thought they kinda losers. Then again, I think the commentary that my mom and aunt made during those programs, constantly making fun of the cast members, etc might have something to do with it.

But I have to side with the Obamas on this. No way in hell would I be comfortable with my pre teen daughters watching the Kardashians.

I guess if they are being reminded that the Kardashians are an example of how not to be then it isn't as bad. They still shouldn't be watching the trash though.

lucciolaa 20th-Oct-2011 12:05 am (UTC)
Oh my god, to this day I despise doing the dishes. I would rather vacuum and mop the entire house rather than do the dishes.

In my defense, though, my mum and sisters were despicable about it. My mum would throw all kinds of garbage into the sink (like apple cores and banana peels) so all of that would have to be cleaned up, and my sisters left their leftovers all over their plates. It was vile.
fwee_prower 20th-Oct-2011 03:07 am (UTC)
