NBC gives Up All Night and Whitney (???) full season orders, axes The Playboy Club

Following in the footsteps of Fox, which last week demonstrated its love for the New Girl, NBC on Tuesday morning became the second network to pull the trigger on a full-season order. In fact, the Peacock unleashed a pair of ‘em, granting pick-ups to the freshman comediesUp All Night, starring Christina Applegate and Will Arnett, and Whitney, which is fronted by stand-up comedienne-turned-sitcom queen Whitney Cummings.

“We made comedy an important goal for us this season and I’m very pleased to be making full-season commitments to both Whitney and Up All Night,” NBC entertainment chair Robert Greenblatt said in a statement. “We’re thrilled with the creative direction of both shows as well as the potential for them to continue to build loyal audiences over the coming months. We’re proud of all of the producers, writers, actors, and directors who have worked so hard to bring these shows to life.”At last tally, Up All Night had settled in at 5.34 million viewers and a 2.1 demo rating in its Wednesday lead-off spot, while Whitney (with 5.37 mil/2.5) dropped 21 and 24 percent, respectively, in its aprés-Office berth.

Trivial Pursuit enthusiasts, take note: The first official cancellation of the 2011-12 TV season is… NBC’s The Playboy Club!

The Peacock net announced Monday that it was pulling the low-rated, period drama off the air after three low-rated episodes.

Rock Center with Brian Williams will take over the Monday at 10 pm perch beginning Oct. 31. It’s unclear what will air there in the interim.

New NBC president Robert Greenblatt put a ton of promotional muscle behind Playboy Club, but audiences remained uninterested. Last night’s final broadcast averaged just over 3 million viewers.

I love not having TV right now tbh because I don't have to see those awful Whitney commercials, I get so much second-hand embarrassment. I can't imagine what it would be like to sit through the whole show.
[info]simplychristina 4th-Oct-2011 05:23 pm (UTC)
Walking past the awful posters for it in the subway here is enough.
[info]sapporonoodles 4th-Oct-2011 06:33 pm (UTC)
there is so much laugh track in that show they can't even keep it out of the commercials. it's unbearable tbh, otherwise i think i might be able to watch it
[info]loislane22 4th-Oct-2011 08:36 pm (UTC)
OMG, Yes. I noticed the excessive laugh track also. Most shows don't have laugh tracks anymore so now it's really noticeable. Ugh.
[info]xeroxicide__ 4th-Oct-2011 06:58 pm (UTC)
I like the character Whitney but there's no other REAL characters. The show can't possibly just revolve around her neuroses forever.
[info]rainbowtomatoe 4th-Oct-2011 05:13 pm (UTC)
lol the playboy club looked so awful...especially with that fake ass don draper/jon hamm dude.
[info]bibbysbaby 4th-Oct-2011 05:25 pm (UTC)
but did you watch to get an accurate opinion of the show?
[info]zeppelina 5th-Oct-2011 01:11 am (UTC)
It was painful to watch. His diction was even the same as Hamm's... and of all the characters, his was probably the only tolerable one. They obviously put all the money, time, and effort into the set and costumes and none into the actors.
[info]logan_lerman 4th-Oct-2011 05:43 pm (UTC)
it really wasn't tho......
[info]modern_toilet 4th-Oct-2011 05:49 pm (UTC)
omg his don draper impression was SO showing. it was kind of pathetic.
[info]williammiller 4th-Oct-2011 06:11 pm (UTC)
Okay, the fake Don Draper comments are so played out here. There's at least 5 people who say this in every post that mentions TPC.
[info]trinigren 4th-Oct-2011 06:28 pm (UTC)
It was actually good though so whatever.
[info]celica18l 4th-Oct-2011 06:53 pm (UTC)
it was awful, only thing i liked was david krumholtz (sp) and his part was so small.
[info]miss_29 4th-Oct-2011 06:54 pm (UTC)
You are absolutely correct and that fake ass Don Draper was excruciating. And they made the show all about HIM.

Whitney is here to stay.

Jeff x Annie and Whitney? Terrible taste.
[info]miss_29 Re: OP,4th-Oct-2011 06:55 pm (UTC)
Outsourced got a full season too. Mark my words, if Whitney ratings keep dropping like a rock, it will join Outsourced in cancellation grave.
[info]celtic_thistle Re: OP,4th-Oct-2011 07:20 pm (UTC)
embarrassing
[info]argybargy Re: OP,4th-Oct-2011 07:28 pm (UTC)
This isn't something to be proud of.
[info]r4wrdinosaur Re: OP,4th-Oct-2011 08:21 pm (UTC)
I love Whitney too. Fuck the haters
[info]xkyrie_eleisonx Re: OP,6th-Oct-2011 02:30 am (UTC)
Late comment but I like Whitney too. Their relationship reminds me of a funnier version of my own.
[info]deacon1022 Re: OP,6th-Oct-2011 03:22 am (UTC)

[info]golden_train 4th-Oct-2011 05:13 pm (UTC)

[info]yourlivewire 4th-Oct-2011 07:23 pm (UTC)

[info]golden_train 4th-Oct-2011 10:08 pm (UTC)

[info]klutzy_girl 4th-Oct-2011 05:14 pm (UTC)
That piece of crap Whitney should have been cancelled.

But yay for Up All Night!

[info]williammiller 4th-Oct-2011 06:13 pm (UTC)
She's on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills so you know that cancelation is just the icing on the cake.

[info]jinnycalderone 4th-Oct-2011 05:14 pm (UTC)
i watched these last week, and i didnt like it. too much forced laughter in the background for whitney and too much secondhand embarrassment from up all night. just no thanks.

oh, and i didnt remember to check out the playboy club. but, im not disappointed, tbh.

nbc, still sucks, imo. the only show i care for is parenthood. and no, i do not like parks and rec, community, office, etc.

[info]fruitariyum 4th-Oct-2011 07:11 pm (UTC)
i feel the same way about up all night

i had 2 stop watching the 2nd ep b/c i was sooo embarrassed 4 them. it reminded me of when i was little... when i would get embarrassed 4 characters i would seriously have 2 leave the room b/c i couldn't watch it anymore (apparently i didn't know how 2 use a remote control idk)

& parenthood is good 2. i also like the biggest loser. that used 2 be the only show i ever watched live, tho since parenthood is on after that, usually i stick around and watch that live too.
[info]jinnycalderone 4th-Oct-2011 11:14 pm (UTC)
i used to love the biggest loser too, jillian michaels is soo hott!!
[info]jazzy 4th-Oct-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
This means I don't have to listen to Eddie's poor man's impersonation of Don Draper anymore? Shame... damn shame.

[info]sweetmizre 5th-Oct-2011 01:39 am (UTC)
I liked it too - everything I watch gets cancelled!
[info]evangelion 5th-Oct-2011 03:19 am (UTC)
same, i was kinda getting into it. i hope they pull a Kings at least (an AWESOME show NBC cancelled super quick too) and have the first season air later so we get to see all of it unless they didn't finish filming s1 before airing
[info]_clubsandwiches 4th-Oct-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
well, fuck.
[info]timmyboy100t 4th-Oct-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
Yay for Up All Night!!!!!
[info]gaga 4th-Oct-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
playboy club wasnt that bad, it was kinda starting to pick up
[info]logan_lerman 4th-Oct-2011 05:44 pm (UTC)
i'm mad that they didn't give it a chance to pick up more viewers

it was starting to get rly interesting
[info]radio_me 4th-Oct-2011 06:52 pm (UTC)
ikr. i hate that tv shows nowadays get no chance, while shows got several seasons to pick up viewers in the 90's. seinfeld didn't really get viewers until season 4. now it's two episodes and it's over.
[info]loganx2 4th-Oct-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
Whitney is such a crap show, but I'm happy for Up all night.
[info]brosling 4th-Oct-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
stoked for up all night
