Photos from Marilyn Monroe's first photoshoot going up for auction

Copyrights and images from Marilyn Monroe's first photo shoot are hitting the auction block.

A bankruptcy judge in Florida ruled earlier this week that photos taken in 1946 of Norma Jeane Dougherty - who went on to become the iconic Monroe - will be sold at auction to settle the debts of the photographer.

Joseph Jasgur's photos, negatives and image copyrights will be sold in December by Julien's Auctions. The collection also includes several model-release forms Miss Dougherty signed for Mr Jasgur in Hollywood.

Natural beauty: A March, 1946 image taken by photographer Joseph Jasgur shows a young and bright Norma Jean Dougherty, who we all came to know as Marilyn Monroe

Darren Julien, chief of Julien's Auctions, said the photos have not been widely distributed and the collection has been locked up in court battles for more than two decades.

He said the sale is significant because 'it's very rare to see something where you can buy a copyrighted image of (Monroe), especially of her first photo shoot.'

Stars in her eyes: Joseph Jasgur was hired by the Blue Book modelling agency to shoot the then-unknown Norma Jeane

Rare finds: The photos include a black-and-white image of the future Ms Monroe in a plaid button-down shirt, hands planted playfully on her hips

Invaluable: The sale is especially significant as the late movie star's first modelling photoshoot

'It's really hard to put a value on something like this, because it's rare and not just for the collector,' he said, noting that the owner of the copyrights will be able to sell and distribute the images.

'These are probably the most significant images of Marilyn that are available because they're so early, from the first part of her career, and it's rare to have images like these where you're selling the rights, too.'

Up for bidding: Mr Jasgur's photos, negatives and image copyrights will be sold in December by Julien's Auctions

Signed, Norma Jeane Dougherty: Paperwork between the ingénue and photographer is also for sale

He declined to estimate how much the images and copyrights will sell for at the company's 'Icons & Idols' auction, to be held December 2-4 in Beverly Hills, California.

The photos include a black-and-white headshot of the future Ms Monroe wearing a jaunty beret, another of her in a halter top and a colour picture of her smiling in a striped bikini on the sand.

Mr Julien said Mr Jasgur was hired by the Blue Book modelling agency to shoot the then-unknown Norma Jeane.

fuuuuuuuck me, she was so beautiful. her life was a tragedy start to finish, shame.
no_x_doubts 25th-Sep-2011 01:53 am (UTC)
i just read her wikipedia because of your comment and while the comparisons to Lindsay are usually silly this line about freaked me out since it could easily be applied to her: "The final years of Monroe's life were marked by illness, personal problems, and a reputation for being unreliable and difficult to work with."
khloekardashian 25th-Sep-2011 01:57 am (UTC)
it's true man, it's terrifying.

although, a little bit of me likes to believe that jackie o got her knocked off because she was too cozy with jfk.
jecelli 25th-Sep-2011 01:30 am (UTC)
I bet Lindsay tries to buy them.

tlcspice 25th-Sep-2011 02:08 am (UTC)
Or Mariah. She bought Marilyn's white baby grand piano.

i dunno why they have two girls playing the part....they look so different...is it a really artistic literal two people thing?
2wiceasnice 25th-Sep-2011 02:16 am (UTC)
lol

The movie is ridiculous !

Ashley Judd is supposed to be Norma Jean and Mira is Marilyn - they look different because Norma Jean had plastic surgery to look like a super star !
dreamofcoffee 25th-Sep-2011 01:36 am (UTC)
Gorgeous.
xtinkerbellax 25th-Sep-2011 01:36 am (UTC)
She looks tiny in the second one. I still LOL when girls try to use the whole, "but Marilyn was a size 12" argument, like sizes then were anything like they are now. She was never fat.
freemywilly 25th-Sep-2011 01:38 am (UTC)
Yeah, even at her heaviest she was still petite.
guzzlemuzzle 25th-Sep-2011 01:39 am (UTC)
That is just what I came to say, I hate that shit sizes now are not what they were then.
fruitariyum 25th-Sep-2011 01:48 am (UTC)
omg a size 12 is not fat tho~~~
_underwhelmed 25th-Sep-2011 03:55 am (UTC)
real women have curves
afxtwn 25th-Sep-2011 01:52 am (UTC)
She had a perfectly tiny waste, they just want to say she was 'fat' because she was filled out in the right places or whatever.

lastingchances 25th-Sep-2011 01:59 am (UTC)
just let them use that one ok
tlcspice 25th-Sep-2011 02:14 am (UTC)
IKR. In 1953, she was 5'5" and 118 lbs. Most of her life she was pretty thin, just had some curves.
alzzers 25th-Sep-2011 02:19 am (UTC)
my comment EXACTLY to my husband upon seeing that pic.
joliebelle 25th-Sep-2011 02:21 am (UTC)
She was a size 12 (back in the day sizes) at her peak...but she was never "fat"
loony_moony 25th-Sep-2011 02:21 am (UTC)
That argument is pretty much null, isn't it. Wasn't size 12 then more like size 4 now or something?
beatlesluv 25th-Sep-2011 02:32 am (UTC)
are you in my head?.....i was just about to post this EXACT comment
michelleantonia 25th-Sep-2011 03:03 am (UTC)
this
psychicherz 25th-Sep-2011 07:43 am (UTC)
Yeah, I'm in the UK where a 12 is a US 8 (so probably close to what the sizing was like in the 50s) and I think even that would be pushing it at her biggest since she wasn't particularly tall.
forgethissmile 25th-Sep-2011 01:31 pm (UTC)
This! I mean, shit, since I believe American sizes have gone down twice since the 50s, she'd roughly be a size 8 in the present day.
surefire14 25th-Sep-2011 05:08 pm (UTC)
This amuses me. I love the "Marilyn Monroe was a 16", too. I bought a couple of vintage "house" dresses at Goodwill last year, find of the century. I am a real size 12 (sometimes a 10) and these dresses were marked size 18. So if Marilyn was a vintage size 12 she was probably a current day 6. If she was a vintage 16, she would still have only been a current day 10.
poetic_daze 25th-Sep-2011 01:39 am (UTC)
damn. people had like... no muscle tone back in the day.
affliction 25th-Sep-2011 01:41 am (UTC)
not much of a change now
starzangelus 25th-Sep-2011 01:44 am (UTC)
Ha, I couldn't figure out what I didn't like. I have no muscle tone (lazy) and it looks unattractive. :\
iprevail 25th-Sep-2011 01:46 am (UTC)
for real. not a good look.
xtinkerbellax 25th-Sep-2011 01:47 am (UTC)
lol, this was one of my first thoughts.
crowie 25th-Sep-2011 10:37 pm (UTC)
Yep, that was one of the things my mum pointed out to me while watching Mad Men. It really broke her suspension of disbelief about the period seeing the women with actual muscle tone.

Not something I would ever have thought of by myself.
affliction 25th-Sep-2011 01:40 am (UTC)

freemywilly 25th-Sep-2011 01:46 am (UTC)
She was 19.
helloneworld 25th-Sep-2011 02:05 am (UTC)
basically. my mom was talking to me earlier about my sister and some problems she has and then she said "but in good news about her, she is a very pretty girl who doesn't need makeup" LOL
i was like "well even pretty people have mental problems" and she just trailed off....
