PRAISE THE SOAP OPERA GODS, Melody Thomas Scott Renews Contract With Y&R!!!

Our long national nightmare is over! Melody Thomas Scott has re-inked her contract with The Young and the Restless. TV Guide got the scoop from the soap diva who filled him in on what went down behind the scenes.

TV Guide: So what did happen? Why did the leading lady on the No. 1 soap suddenly vanish?

Thomas Scott: That's a tough question. I can't pretend to know for sure, being the victim here. Sony would have to tell you, which they won't.

TV Guide: You're not getting off that easy! Do you believe this was financial?

Thomas Scott: Yes, I do but it was not handled very well. I've been in this business since I was three and I know how this works. If a show is having problems with money or budget they call the actor very respectfully and say, "We have a little financial crunch here. Let's try to work something out, okay?"

That's what should have happened. The problem was that such a phone call was never made to me and I was left in the lurch.

Had they picked up the phone back in March or April and just said two or three sentences to me, none of this would have happened. But nobody said anything, and that started to get a little odd after a couple of weeks of not working. I would call in for my shooting schedule as I usually do and be told, "You have another week off." And this kept happening week after week after week.

Then the fans started paying attention to all this and were asking me, "Are you leaving the show?" I had no idea what to say or why I wasn't working. Then all hell seemed to break lose. People were saying I had asked for a leave of absence. False. They were saying, "Oh, Melody, wants to spend time with her new grandbaby twins." False. [Laughs] Well, of course I do want to spend time with them but I would never quit my job over it! Then, when Twitter got hold of this, it became a huge international situation. I owe my return to the fans.

Without Twitter, I don't know that I would be coming back. I really attribute it to that. It's pretty amazing. Social networking, baby!

TV Guide: Finally, some good news for Y&R, a show that could really use it right now. In your absence, the ratings have been dropping like crazy. How are you feeling about all this?

Thomas Scott: I'm very happy to be coming back. Whatever weirdness made this all happen now seems to be gone. They have come around and suddenly appreciate me again in the way that [Y&R creator] Bill Bell did back in the old days. This is nothing against [current Y&R chief] Maria Bell and I want to make that very clear. A lot of people have been misled and think that all this has been Maria's fault and that is absolutely not the case. I have never had any ill will toward her through this entire thing. She has been great and extremely supportive.

TV Guide: Give us something, doll! Is this "exciting" story a new direction for Nikki? Surely there's some small vague crumb you can pass our way.

Thomas Scott: Well, apparently Nikki has been missing for a while. The rehab thing only lasted so long and now she's disappeared and has been doing other things, which is what I can't tell you about at this point. But when she finally comes home there are some very big issues going on with a lot of people and it will create big problems.

Why Lord?! Yvonne Zima Back To The Young and The Restless!

All My Children Legend Mary Fickett Dead at 83!

In a sad, real life twist, Mary Fickett, who originated the role of heroine Ruth Brent Martin on All My Children, has passed away. The news comes just as the iconic sudser Fickett starred on is preparing to leave the network television airwaves later this month. Fickett died on Sept. 8 at her home in Callao, Virginia, according to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. She was 83.

Debuting on AMC in 1970, Fickett portrayed Ruth for nearly 30 years.

She'll be playing Angelina, the Jersey-girl daughter of mob boss Angelo (Mike Starr). The actress-singer starts shooting the CBS soap the week of September 22 and is expected to hit the air late October.

ONE LIFE TO LIVE's John-Paul Lavoisier (Rex) to guest on THE MENTALIST!

"It was his first audition in L.A. and he booked it," reports his real-life love Farah Fath (Gigi).

AMC's Walt Willey Talks About Last Day Of Taping!

Walt Willey, a star of ABC’s All My Children, spoke to The Observer last week after the final day in production of the soap for the network. It wasn’t a sad day of taping, he said: “The scenes we were shooting were party scenes anyway—the atmosphere matched the scenes. It was kind of a party atmosphere. You wouldn’t know we were canceled.”

And technically speaking, the show was not cancelled—the show is to live on in some form in a deal with the production company Prospect Park which is to see the show landing online. “It’s in transition, not in pause,” said Mr. Willey.

“I hate change,” Mr. Willey said of the shift to “airing” All My Children online, “and I think, five days a week, we’re your only friends at that time of day. For the most part, we always drew an audience—Grandma watched, and therefore, the grandchild watched. Viewing these shows was a tradition.

“I think this will reverse it. Now the grandchild will say, ‘I know how you can watch your show [online].’… I think about this crap a lot.”

As for the replacement of All My Children, which is to go off the air September 23 (its replacement, the food-themed talk show The Chew, is to commence September 26), a decision that All My Children star Susan Lucci recently decried. Mr. Willey said, citing soap operas’ brand loyalty, “I think they could have done it in a far smarter business way, and they’re going to see that very shortly… Network television is eating itself for the same reason soaps are in trouble.

“If ABC had not wanted so badly to get out of the business, they had a great opportunity to do what Prospect Park was doing [by broadcasting online]. I just think there’s an incredible demographic there—I wouldn’t want to see them leave the fold, these are the folks who have been watching for so long.”

Mr. Willey, who does not know if he will be one of the actors returning for the Prospect Park All My Children, is embarking on a short tour entitled “A Tribute to Pine Valley” in October (including a stop at Town Hall on October 26). “It’s this thing that harkens back to the glory days,” said Mr. Willey. “We did these big shows, people are starved for that—there’s nothing like it anymore. There were these super-soap weekends at Disney—now those are gone. People are really wanting this.”

Susan and Bill Hayes Return to Days of Our Lives!

There has been a lot of hoopla — understandably! — about the September 26 relaunch of NBC's Days Of Our Lives and the return of supercouple Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall. But, truth be told, we're just as excited that Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes — the true First Couple of Salem — are also headed back to the show.

TV Guide Magazine: I've always admired you two for the way you weather the ups and downs at Days. We might not see you for months, or years, but you always come back smiling. No sour feelings.

Seaforth Hayes: Bill and I were talking about that just this morning. You can be sore and hurt and mad about it or you can go on and have a wonderful life, which we're endeavoring to do. We travel. We have fun together. We're just putting the finishing touches on our first novel. It's taken us four to five years and it's very rip-roaring.

TV Guide Magazine: Give us the deets.

Seaforth Hayes: It's called Trumpet and it's very romantic, though not a romance novel. It's an historic novella, covering 20 years of the Regency period, and one of the main characters in Giovanni Belzoni, the great Italian explorer. Napoleon is also in it. It's also about the theater. We've had a hell of a good time putting it together. It's very sexy and a lot of fun and everything I really know about acting is in this book. Of course, it's all happening in another century but it's the same feelings — all the stresses and the delights and the fears I've known as an actress are in there. [Laughs] But that's not what you and I are supposed to be talking about! The public relations people want us to be talking about the newly revitalized Days of Our Lives.

TV Guide Magazine: Okay, okay! How do Doug and Julie fit into the big event?

Seaforth Hayes: [Laughs] Why, thank you for asking! It's nothing hugely important but it's a charming set of shows and I was very happy to be doing them. We laugh it up for a few lines here and there and go through old pictures and stuff like that to remind the audience of who the Hortons were. And we'll be singing together which is rather hilarious. Someone at Days seemed to remember that Bill and I sang together on the show in the past when, in fact, he and I have never done that. [Laughs] But if that's how they remember it, fine. We will sing Irving Berlin's "I'll Be Loving You Always," which was Tom and Alice Horton's theme. I think maybe Billy sang it at their 40th anniversary party. It's extremely sentimental and sweet and romantic, which is the direction they want the show to turn in.

DAYS Sarah Brown Interview: Her new role as Madison James!

When DAYS sold you the role of Madison James and you agreed to sign on, did you know that she you would be paired pretty quickly with Brady Black, played by Eric Martsolf?

SARAH: I did not know anything about Brady, but when Greg Meng (DAYS co-executive producer) sold me the role of Madison it was about the idea that we were going to build this character together from the ground up and that I would have a lot of input and I love that. There are a lot of things I can’t talk about right now, but I will say, I get him. I get our co-executive producer. I look in his eyes and I see he knows what he is doing. I’m not saying other people don’t know what they are doing, but when you are coming on to a new show you need to consider who is helming it, because otherwise it is not going to do well. I think Greg and I are on the same page as to what things need to change to move forward in a way that brings in more and more viewers. So 13-year-olds, women my age, and women my mother’s age, will all sit together again and watch the show.

So what is the key ingredient that you think a daytime soap has got to have to grab the audience and make them stay put?

SARAH: Soaps have got to have romance, romance, and romance. Romance leads to drama and all the other stuff is background. You know that, and I know that. It’s something you should be able to go in the next day to work and have that water cooler moment, and go, “Oh my God. Did you see that guy taking his shirt off? And then he did …” People get excited about that. Jordan and I went to see Steve Carell’s movie, Crazy Stupid Love with again, Ryan Gosling. (Laughs) And as we were walking out, I thought, “Wow. We are finally at that point when they are 13; they want romance in their lives, too!”

At a Glance: Crystal Chappell!

Crystal Chappell makes her final DAYS appearance on September 22. Here, the actress talks about wrapping up Carly's storyline and moving on to the third season of her web series, VENICE.

SOW: What happens when Jennifer and Daniel visit Carly in rehab this week?

Chappell: It's part of Carly's therapy, making amends to the people that she's hurt. The only chance Carly has of surviving is owning up to her flaws. So Carly has to say to her best friend in the world, "I have these feelings about you that aren't good and it's my problem." It's hard to do that face to face with people.

SOW: How was your last day working on DAYS?

Chappell: I got to work with some of my favorite people, people that have been pivotal to this story: Missy [Reeves, Jennifer], Shawn [Christian, Daniel], Molly Burnett (Melanie) and Sydney Penny (Dr. Norman). There was a small group of us, but it was a lot of fun working with them. They were terrific.

SOW: What is your overall feeling about your last two years being back on DAYS?

Chappell: It was an interesting journey. When DAYS called, I had another job offer. I was curious because I had never gone back and played a character that I had done before. I wanted to go back, create some good energy and reacquaint myself with people that I knew. I also met some new people who became friends. Shawn, Molly, Galen [Gering, Rafe], Nadia [Bjorlin, Chloe]. The best part of going into any work situation is the quality of people. So it was fun to be back at DAYS and play.

Candid talk about Chloe’s ‘Days of Our Lives’ exit and embarking on ‘Dirty Soap’!

Watching the once sweet, sheltered Chloe Lane disintegrate into a desperate prostitute was hard for Days of Our Lives viewers to watch and even harder for actress Nadia Bjorlin to play.

What was your reaction when you learned Chloe was becoming a hooker?

At first, I wasn’t keen on the idea. Then, I thought, because Chloe was originally blackmailed into becoming a prostitute, that it could be a really horrible dilemma. What would someone do in the name of love for their child? That’s a valid subject to broach. It could have been really tragic, but it just wasn’t executed well.

You’ve already shot your final Days scenes. (They air September 29.) What can you share about Chloe's exit?

With the way that the story was going and how I really wasn’t pleased with it, it was the best possible outcome. The nice part was, the last week, Chloe kind of reconnects with Brady, which is a throwback to the history of the characters. He basically helps get her back on her feet and gives her this opportunity where she’ll be able to go rebuild her life, be with her son, and be the mom she wants to be. So it is a bittersweet happy ending.

Are you nervous embarking on a reality show called Dirty Soap and everything that title connotes?

I think [the name] is a little hokey. When we signed up to do the pilot, it was nowhere near sounding anything like that. The premise that attracted us to the show was that it was based on young actors in Hollywood, and the tie that binds us all is soap operas. We either work on them or have worked on them. We all know each other or have worked together. It’s kind of giving a behind-the-scenes look into our professional and personal lives. Hopefully, it will give fans of soaps something really different and fun to watch.

Young and Restless Employs End-of-Summer Casting Bloodbath!

It looks as though Tristan Rogers (Colin) may not be the only one leaving The Young and the Restless. According to sources, Genie Francis (Genevieve) could be on her way out as well. Meanwhile, according to CBS Soaps In Depth, Sean Patrick Flannery (Sam), Eden Riegel (Heather) and Darius McCrary (Malcolm) are also being let go. Last night, Rogers announced on Twitter his character was departing Genoa City.

Missouri City man and radio host Michael Garfield plays dead on General Hospital!

In the story arc that begins next week, Franco reprises his role as an eccentric killer who is also named Franco. Garfield, 46, plays a model that Franco photographs in his studio.

"He's starting to take pictures of me in his crazy studio, in a dead position," Garfield said. "So I am his model-slash-body that he ultimately kills... he and I have a little confrontation, needless to say. It was a long day for someone with five lines," Garfield said, though he says he expected the shoot to involve a lot of "hurry up and wait."

He also found himself surprised by the strict division of labor on the set.

"It's interesting how the unions work," he said. "A wardrobe person is not allowed to touch a prop on the set. A prop person is not allowed to fix your tie."

Hillary B. Smith to star in "Any Given Monday" at 59E59!

We are giving you an Insider exclusive sneak peek at the steamy photo spread with (Austin) Patrick Muldoon (shirtless and looking yummy!), who returns to Days of our Lives September 26, with co-star (Carrie) Christie Clark. America's favorite daytime couple is back in Salem! Get ready for the sizzle!

Jack Wagner Signs A New Contract With B&B!

When Ashley Jones brings Bridget back to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL this fall, it appears that she'll get the chance to resolve any unfinished business with her character's ex, Nick: A spokesperson for B&B tells Soaps In Depth that Jack Wagner has signed a new contract to remain with the soap!

Eden Riegel Speaks Out About Her Y&R Exit!

When Eden Riegel's manager phoned her with the news that her run as Y&R's Heather was coming to an end after a year-and-a-half, Riegel says, "It was a hard call to get. It's a hard call to get anytime, I guess — I've never been fired before [laughs]!"

Her manager's confirmation capped off a bizarre day in which social media brought the news to her attention before she got official word from the show. "My fan club president sent me a link to an article that said [I'd been let go] and she asked, 'Is this true?' And I e-mailed her back and said, 'Absolutely not. Don't worry.' And then as the day progressed, on Twitter, there was just so much chatter and so many people saying, 'What's going on? I heard you're leaving, I'm so sorry.' I thought, 'Wow. What if this was true?' It started to become more and more of a reality, like, 'Is this really possible?' But by 3 or 4 in the afternoon, when I hadn't heard anything, I was like, 'No, this is for sure not true.' So I went on and tweeted, 'It's absolutely not true.' And then an hour later, I got the call from my manager and I was like, 'Oh. Boy, do I have egg on my face [laughs].' But it was fine. And actually, the way that it happened, in that it was so public, sort of took the onus off of me. I didn't then have to go to Twitter to say, 'Hey, I have bad news.' Everybody in the world knew before me! So, instead, I got to skip right to the, 'Hey, we love you, we're so sorry,' part, which is the more fun part anyway, people getting all up in arms: 'How can they do this to you? We're on your side!' And that's always nice to hear."

The actress is taking the news in stride. "When my manager gave me the news, I said, 'Oh, okay, thanks, I'll talk to you soon.' And she was like, 'Wait, you don't want to, like, say anything, or talk to me about anything?' I said, 'I'm really tired, I really just want to go take a nap.' Jack has been sleeping so poorly, I've just been so out of it. But I went and hung out with my baby, and I was so sad, and I was looking at him and I literally forgot it even happened, which you'd think would be impossible! So the timing is really good for me that way because I have the greatest distraction in the world. I'm a very lucky girl. I have the sweetest little boy, the sweetest husband, and I'm sure in a few months, I'll look back at this and think, 'Thank God that happened, because if it hadn't, I would never have had this experience or that opportunity.' I'm feeling very good about finding the positive in this."

First Look: Sarah Michelle Gellar Returns to All My Children!

All My Children will soon end its staggering 41-year run but not before one of its most famous grads drops in to say goodbye. Ringer star Sarah Michelle Gellar, who won a 1995 Daytime Emmy as Kendall Hart, the wicked, sexually audacious daughter of Erica Kane, will return to the ABC soap September 21.

Gellar approached the show herself, specifically asking not to play Kendall since the role is now owned by Alicia Minshew — so instead she's going to play a delusional patient at Pine Valley Hospital who thinks she's Erica's daughter! The first person Gellar's character encounters — and recognizes — is Dr. Maria Santos Grey, played by fellow AMC alum Eva La Rue (CSI: Miami).

Says the soap's exec producer Julie Carruthers: "It was a great pleasure to welcome Sarah back to Pine Valley and especially fun to have her character wink to the audience with fun lines that referenced her previous character."

SOD/SOW Special Farewell Issue Hits Stands Soon!

The editors of Soap Opera Digest and Weekly present an ALL MY CHILDREN tribute issue, which will hit stands on September 20. With nearly 400-photos, this star-studded 96-page magazine covers four decades of everything viewers have loved about Pine Valley and the people who have lived in it.

New Interview With Laura Wright & Lisa LoCicero; Kirsten Storms & Julie Berman!

The first in the "Ask General Hospital" Series.

All My Children's Leading Men to Do Cooking Segments on The Talk Same Week The Chew Premieres in Their Timeslot?!

Debbi Morgan’s not the only one leaving All My Children for a stint in CBS Daytime. Michael E. Knight (Tad Martin), Ricky Paull Goldin (Dr. Jake Martin), and Jacob Young (JR Chandler) will also make a showing on the Eye network — though not in ways you might expect (or desperately want as a soap fan).

Allow EW to explain: The All My Children hunks have agreed to participate in an “All My Meals” week (get it?) on The Talk. The actors will prepare their favorite recipes while joining Julie Chen and Co. at the table to reflect on AMC, which ends its run on Sept. 23. Revel in the irony: The men have cooked up this special appearance on The Talk while ABC readies their old AMC time slot for the new foodie show, The Chew.

Anyhoo, Young’s appearance on The Talk Sept. 26 won’t be his last in the CBS day part: he is reuniting with his buds on Bold and the Beautiful to reprise his role of Rick Forrester. As for fellow AMC vet Morgan — who played Angie Hubbard/Baxter — she was recruited by CBS’ Young and the Restless. (Meanwhile, Knight will show up on The Talk Sept. 28 and Goldin on Sept. 29.)

General Hospital's Kirsten Storms Temporarily Exits!

Soap Opera Digest is reporting Kirsten Storms will take a leave of absence at General Hospital due to an illness. According to a statement by the show:

Due to illness of Kirsten Storms, the role of Maxie Jones will be temporarily recast by Jen Lilley with a first airdate of September 28. The cast and crew of General Hospital wish Kirsten a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming her back to the set soon.

National Enquirer at it again: Susan Lucci vs Sarah Michelle Gellar!

Sarah Michelle Gellar still hates her former costar Susan Lucci.

Lucci played Sarah’s onscreen mom in TV show All My Children – which is due to end its 41-year run on ABC — and was apparently rather mean to the former Buffy actress.

“Back then, Susan was in full diva mode,” a source told American tabloid the National Enquirer.

“She trampled right over Sarah, criticized her looks and her acting, and made her life miserable.

“It’s not a time Sarah looks back at fondly.

“When Sarah came on to do a scene recently with her friend Eva La Rue, Susan never showed up on the set.

“While Sarah doesn’t have any ill will toward Susan, it appears Susan still is holding a grudge.”

ALL MY CHILDREN finale viewing party at Sidetrack Sept. 23!

The event will benefit Season of Concern, the Chicagoland theatre community's fundraising effort in the fight against AIDS.

Co-Hosted by Jason Spitzer and ABC 7 Chicago's WINDY CITY LIVE's Val Warner, scheduled to attend are Chrishell Stause (Amanda Martin), Terri Ivens (ex-Simone Torres), Jeffrey Carlson (ex-Zarf/Zoey), Brian Gaskill (ex-Bobby Warner), Matt Borlenghi (ex-Brian Bodine) and Chris Bruno (ex-Michael Delaney).

ABC Gives Final Nods to ‘All My Children’!

During the next week, ABC Daytime will take part in saying goodbye to “All My Children” which has been a part of their line-up since 1970. Following is details on the scheduled events which will include “Good Morning America” dedicating a special segment to the show and “The View” dedicating an entire airing to their former neighbors.

Weeks ago, on Twitter, “Dancing with the Stars” contestant J.R. Martinez (Brot) revealed to fans that Cameron Mathison was taping a special segment of ABC’s “Good Morning America” due to air soon. Today on Twitter, Mathison announced the segment is due to air tomorrow, Thursday, September 15. Look for Mathison to interact with other ”AMC” cast members and take fans on a tour through 41-years of Pine Valley history. “Good Morning America” airs on ABC Daytime from 7:00 AM EST to 9:00 AM EST.

On Friday, September 23, “The View” will be co-hosted by daytime drama’s biggest star, “AMC’s” Susan Lucci (Erica) alongside regular co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd. Guests will include “AMC” creator Agnes Nixon, and current stars including but not limited to Mathison, Rebecca Budig (Greenlee) and Vincent Irizarry (David). Expect some blasts from the Pine Valley past guests, as well. The tribute episode will include never-before-seen footage, interviews with the cast members who returned to pay tribute to the show and a sneak peek at the finale.

As previously reported, Disney which is ABC’s parent company will also air a tribute to “AMC” on cable channel SOAPnet. The tribute consists of re-airings centered around Erica Kane and Pine Valley’s most romantic couples.

“AMC” last airs on the ABC network on Friday, September 23. The daytime drama was licensed by production company Prospect Park earlier this summer and is slated to begin airing on the internet, with new content, in 2012.

Behind-the-scenes look at the Days of our Lives "REBOOT!"

Blind Item: Which Soap Superstar Is About to Do A Soap Hop?!

Kiddies, yours truly is hearing a leading soap star may jump ship (or be pushed off the deck) from their current show and head home to their sudsy origins. Reception for this soap icon has been downright frosty at the soap he or she is currently appearing on. Word is the thesp in question is already in talks with his or her former soap hub, which has been thinking of the actor since a recent reshuffling of the deck. Stay tuned...

Cameron Mathison on Cast's Prospect Park Negotiations: "It's Looking Very Good"!

Great news All My Children lovers. Cameron Mathison announced on Good Morning America today he along with his AMC costars are currently in negotations with Prospecrt Park. According to Mathison:

I have been given permission to announce that I and others from All My Children have been approached by the company, Prospect Park, who bought AMC with the intention to move it online. Just as soaps were very pivotal in the transition from radio to television, they will be right in the thick of things again in the transition from television to the Internet. It's looking very good.

Alicia Minshew Open to Recurring on All My Children!

While it looks like Alicia Minshew won't be signing onboard All My Children's online reboot full-time, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is open to recurring on the sudser.

I know they are starting to approach people now. If they were to come to me and ask me to do it [and] if I could work it out where I could maybe be recurring, I could pop in every now and then, I could work with these people that I love and still be a part of this. I would be open to that.

Will One Life to Live's Josh Kelly be Allowed to Take His Black Boxer Briefs With Him to MTV?!

One Life to Live's Josh Kelly could soon be making viewers wish they had scratch-and-sniff screens for cable dramedy viewing. According to Deadline, Kelly has booked one of the leads in MTV's pilot Dumb Girls, from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich.

Kelly will play Danny, a pal of lead character Michelle (Christine Evangelista), who wants to be more than friends. Michelle is described as being "competent at her job but foolish when it comes to guys."

Prospect Park Names Frank Valentini V.P. of Serialized Dramas!

According to Deadline, Prospect Park has put One Life to Live showrunner Frank Valentini in charge of both All My Children and One Life to Live, by making him vice-president of serial dramas for the company. Valentini will also continue on as executive producer of One Life to Live. This gives me hope that AMC's budget can finally be whipped into some semblance of shape — not to mention its creative vision— with Valentini there to see after that Julie Hanan Caruthers!

It's no secret among industry insiders that, despite ABC's protestations of their soaps not being cost effective, Valentini has brought OLTL in millions under budget for years. The show has also been creatively superior to the rest of the sudsers on daytime for at least the past three seasons and has been enjoying the ratings success to prove it for almost the last six months.
