'Austin Powers' Actor Gets Life Imprisonment for Rape Charges

Joseph Hyuangmin Son has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the torture and rape of a 20-year-old woman.

The actor, best known for his supporting role as Random Task in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, received his conviction last month.

The incident in question took place on Christmas Eve 1990, in California, when Son and a male accomplice attacked a woman at gunpoint before continually raping her in a nearby car.

"My emotional scars are intense. My twenties were stripped from my life as I relearned how to walk, see, hear, and cope with the outside world again," Son's victim said, in a statement released to the court. "Joseph Son not only cost me my job at my salon, but also my college savings, not to mention the impact it's made on celebrating Christmas year after year."

Despite Son's life sentence, the residing judge suggested that he could eventually be eligible for parole.

The post previously made about this was before the judge made a final decision on his sentence.

one_song_for_me 11th-Sep-2011 02:32 pm (UTC)
Should be hung to be honest.
musicnextdoor 11th-Sep-2011 02:52 pm (UTC)
Or ended by lethal injunction... neater.
tamburlaine 11th-Sep-2011 04:53 pm (UTC)
Hanging's neater, actually. From a biological standpoint. Poisons are weird. You don't know if someone's actually dead and people slip into comas and ugh. They did away with hanging because it's gruesome but I think watching someone have a seizure and foam at the mouth piss themselves and then perish is just as gross as watching someone flail at the end of a rope -- and they only flail if they fall wrong.

Death. Never truly neat.

I wish more rapists would get life in prison tbh.

Agreed. Isn't the maximum penalty for rape something really low, like a few years? I feel like he got life for the torture part :\
leatherandjeans 11th-Sep-2011 04:07 pm (UTC)
Here (Australia) the max penalty IS life, in several states at least. But most don't get that much. I think the average is 7 years. Rape should be regarded as torture in itself imo.

me too. My uncle is in prison for child molestation (his children and others, not me). He got 14 years and he'll be out soon. I'm not happy about it.
enema_recipe 11th-Sep-2011 05:21 pm (UTC)
Yes. They are more likely to go and recommit those crime than someone who killed someone during a "crime of passion," imo.
romp 11th-Sep-2011 05:24 pm (UTC)
We do need to come up with a way of dealing with people like pedophiles whose rate of repeat offence is very high. I'm pretty sure serial rape is another one. Which is why tey talk about chemical castration and some way of CHANGING the individual. Because, yeah, letting them out becomes a waiting game.
bathstone 11th-Sep-2011 05:48 pm (UTC)
Yeah, they need harsher sentences. It's usually 5-7 years or some BS. Rape is torture. It should be treated as such.
oohasparklie 11th-Sep-2011 06:10 pm (UTC)
TBH I was suprised at the sentence. Crimes against women and children are almost never punished anywhere near severely enough.

He should be killed for that
xherowenxadd 11th-Sep-2011 02:35 pm (UTC)
how he is just getting prison now if it happened in 1996
_amateur 11th-Sep-2011 02:40 pm (UTC)
If I remember the last post correctly, the statute of limitations won't allow him to be charged for the actual rape, but the kidnapping and torture were still punishable.

I think.
janey 11th-Sep-2011 02:43 pm (UTC)
he got arrested for something else and when they ran his dna it matched this old case
nistha 11th-Sep-2011 04:21 pm (UTC)
Well, in our training, we were told that if there is DNA evidence, there is no statute of limitations. However, I don't know if it applied to the cases that happened prior to that decision.
turi 11th-Sep-2011 02:36 pm (UTC)
1990?? why did it take so long.
kawaiisis86 11th-Sep-2011 02:39 pm (UTC)
I'm assuming all the fuckeries with rape kits and how they did them back then. Also by the fact it was Xmas, maybe the police she reported it to were dicks and thought she was drunk therefore asked for it, all that kind of stuff.
janey 11th-Sep-2011 02:49 pm (UTC)
it was because even though they had dna evidence they never found a match until he got arrested for something else and they ran his dna through the system
medranochav 11th-Sep-2011 02:36 pm (UTC)
now I can never watch austin powers without associating it with this awful situation.
musicnextdoor 11th-Sep-2011 02:57 pm (UTC)
Yes, that was probably taken into account in sentencing.

(But really, yeah, when someone commits hideous crimes it does tend to impact the experience many have with their art. I can't watch the Naked Gun movies anymore because they star a murderer, and I won't watch Roman Polanski movies because, you know, he drugged and raped a child.)
get_gone 11th-Sep-2011 03:45 pm (UTC)
I can separate Polanski the director from Polanski the man though, or rather it's easier to do so bc he isn't in the films himself. I will prob have difficulty forgetting about this guy being a rapist :/
cyberghostface 11th-Sep-2011 05:58 pm (UTC)
I've never watched a Polanksi film. Just seeing pictures of him makes my stomach churn.
alyssa_hilary 11th-Sep-2011 08:47 pm (UTC)
I looked up who the murderer was in the Naked Gun movies and it's O.J. Simpson. I had no clue he was in those films, but it's been a long time since I've seen them.

He's in like 90 seconds total throughout all 3 films. I don't even think he's in the 2nd and 3rd.
