Amy Winehouse 'Back to Black' becomes UK's highest-selling album this century

Amy Winehouse's Back to Black has become the UK's highest-selling album of the century so far.

The record has overtaken James Blunt's 2005 debut Back to Bedlam to lead the 21st century best seller list. When the chart was compiled at the end of the last decade, Back to Black finished in third place, behind Blunt and Dido's No Angel.

Originally released in 2006, Back to Black has had a resurgence in sales since the singer passed away last month.

It returned to the top spot the week after her death, while her debut album Frank also climbed back into the top ten.

The Official Charts Company revealed that Back to Black has now sold 3,259,100 copies, beating Blunt's sales of 3,241,118.

"Century" is a bit hyperbolic no? It's 2011 not 2078 or some shit.
britneys 25th-Aug-2011 07:07 am (UTC)
Ok party pooper.

Meh, it's easier than "since 1.1.2000". Besides, they could have used millenium as well :P
readyifyouare 26th-Aug-2011 01:26 am (UTC)
Right? It's like saying someone is the most mature 11 year old.

I wonder what people will think about her in 10 or 15 years
likegunfire 25th-Aug-2011 07:08 am (UTC)
like, will her name live on??
tiki876 25th-Aug-2011 07:12 am (UTC)
it could go either way really, i mean look at kurt cobain. She's the first major musician since him to be part of the 27 club
kreayshawn 25th-Aug-2011 07:25 am (UTC)
i think she'll blend in with the rest of the extreme celebrity culture characters we got now but will be a romantic figure of this period
h0tfuss 25th-Aug-2011 07:43 am (UTC)
It's hard to say. In the US she was still on the cusp of stardom. She would have needed another hit album here (and probably bigger and better than Back to Black) before she'd have been considered a legit star.
treebraids 25th-Aug-2011 07:07 am (UTC)
That's a shame...Frank is a better album.

I wish everyone buying B2B would buy that too :/

fassavoy 25th-Aug-2011 07:33 am (UTC)
Sorry but no. B2B has a more defined and mature sound. With Frank it's like she was still finding a direction and ended up cramming in 1 CD whatever she came up with.
speedychi 25th-Aug-2011 08:39 pm (UTC)
although i love them both, i agree

any male brit*

and i mean let's face it, better than most female brits too! MOST, though
britneys 25th-Aug-2011 07:10 am (UTC)
Awesome! She totally deserves it. I can't think of too many albums from the past decade that are great no matter what genre of music you listen to, like this one is.
h0tfuss 25th-Aug-2011 07:45 am (UTC)
I think the Strokes' first album was more broadly influential. The whole hipster thing is their doing.
tigirah 25th-Aug-2011 09:20 am (UTC)
idk, maybe they made hipsters more mainstream but pretty sure they existed before the Strokes.
workbitch 25th-Aug-2011 07:11 am (UTC)
Congrats Amy! But it's 2011 though? A bit premature. It's like when a guy blows his load in his pants and all the girl did was take her top off. It's way too early.

My best friend used to always tell me about this time she was making out with this guy and they had barely started doing anything remotely over the clothes and all the sudden he stops kissing her and says "I went."

paulmitchell 25th-Aug-2011 07:17 am (UTC)
love is a losing game is my ultimate favorite, after she passed i would fall asleep with that song playing in my head.. it was like it was actually playing through my speakers
laurie_springs 25th-Aug-2011 07:18 am (UTC)

But seriously, Frank is the shit, too. Even my dad loves that and he hates everything modern.
laurie_springs 25th-Aug-2011 07:23 am (UTC)
Amazing sample.

I think You Sent Me Flying is mine....if only because of the ending hehe
roxas39 25th-Aug-2011 07:49 am (UTC)
Mine too, esp You sent me Flying
fanskap 25th-Aug-2011 07:30 am (UTC)
lol, same with my dad!
misscrystal 25th-Aug-2011 07:23 am (UTC)
I've never gotten the big deal about this album. I tried listening to it so many times, but everything about it left me underwhelmed.

Come at me

laurie_springs 25th-Aug-2011 07:25 am (UTC)
I thought it was incredibly cohesive and the lyrics are incredible aside from Rehab which I've always reguarded as audio pollution (Hot Chip remix is where it's at with that track)

I can't stand rehab, I always skip it.
jeterluva 25th-Aug-2011 07:27 am (UTC)
Did she ever go back to the studio to work on the follow up to Back to Black?
troy_macclure 25th-Aug-2011 07:27 am (UTC)
