ABC orders "The Last Resort"

ABC recently grabbed hold of a new pilot called The Last Resort, and it should be a hit in the making since the creators of the show are Shawn Ryan, the creator of The Shield, and feature writer Karl Gajdusek, who wrote the Showtime series, Dead Like Me, and the upcoming Nicolas Cage movie, Trespass. According to Deadline, the project was pitched to the networks on Friday so ABC didn’t waste any time with getting the new pilot on their line-up. Only time will tell if the network will be suffering from buyer remorse in the future.

The Last Resort takes place in the not-so-distant future, where the crew of a U.S. nuclear submarine is forced to go on the run when they refuse an order to launch nuclear missiles. They set up at a NATO listening post, where they declare themselves to be “the world’s smallest nuclear nation with 24 nuclear warheads.”

Standing up to the world at large won’t be the crew’s only challenge, though. They’ll also have to create a society from the ground up and deal with the natives on the island that just became their new little nation. Co-creator Ryan says The Last Resort “allows us to examine what is going on in this country in micro form.”

While I’m usually not a fan of shows that try to teach us something, The Last Resort might be worth trying out since the storyline doesn’t seem to be like anything else the networks are tossing our way.

ONTD: What apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic book recommendations do you have?

I read The Road and liked it a lot. I want some similar end-of-days type stuff.

i found it in the YA section, but I loved it:

You read YA? you must be stupid.

/typical ONTD answer

No but really. I've heard good things about Ashes, Ashes.
slaygalthessily 25th-Aug-2011 07:52 am (UTC)
lol. I think the authors who write YA have more imagination than the people who write big kid books. My mom's been dropping all these books on me that are like 'thrillers' and 'mystery' novels. i'm like unless it's a romance novel, i don't read stuff meant for the older folk. I'll always prefer YA.

I was surprised I liked Ashes, Ashes, but that's the type of thing I'm into now. You know, end of the world stuff. I'm waiting for a 2012 YA novel to come out. That would make my day. But Ashes, Ashes was pretty good.

Lol how is that a typical ONTD answer, this community worships Harry Potter and to a lesser extent Hunger Games, His Dark Materials, etc. In fact the majority of the books discussed about here are YA.

I guess I was seeing things in all the YA threads with people talking shit about YA and the people that read it. My bad.

The end of the world is only the beginning.

Zombies are on the loose and the world is falling apart. In the tradition of apocalyptic novels such as Stephen King’s THE STAND, a group of strangers on a Manhattan subway are brought together in the name of survival. The group follows the lead of Ari Brenner, a young man who doesn’t recognize his own leadership qualities and believes they follow him simply because he wears an army uniform. Lila Teske, a college student studying philosophy, finds her non-violent beliefs tested in the crucible of a zombie attack. There are other members of the diverse group, but the focus of the story is on Ari and Lila, two young people who learn about sacrifice and inner strength through the ordeal.

With the city’s infrastructure down and communication with the outside world curtailed the survivors head toward the nearest marina. When they meet a lab tech who may have a solution to the virus, they know his safety is paramount and it’s more important than ever that they get off the island. But zombies aren’t the only danger that impedes them on their perilous journey.

"Navy meets Twilight" is like one of those trick sentences where the sentence is grammatically correct but has no meaning.

Hark, an interesting premise that hasn't been done 4,879 times before. I'll have to check it out.
