50 Best Movie Kisses

Pucker Up! Cinema's most luscious liplocks...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

50 Cinema Paradiso (1988)

The Kissers: Too numerous to list.

The Kisses: A snogathon montage assembled from all the kisses which the patrons of Cinema Paradiso didn’t get to see, because the priest of Giancaldo had censored the movies.

Passion Or Romance: Both – this is cinema.

49 Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982)

The Kissers: Brad Hamilton (Judge Reinhold) and Linda Barrett (Phoebe Cates).

The Kiss: The ultimate teenage fantasy, as a glistening-wet Linda emerges from a pool, unhooks her bra and plants a smacker on Brad’s face. The catch? It really is a fantasy.

Passion Or Romance: Given that Brad is mid-wank, we’re thinking it’s probably the former.

48 A Room With A View (1986)

The Kissers: Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) and George Emerson (Julian Sands).

The Kiss: George makes an impetuous assault on Lucy’s lips in a wheat field.

Passion Or Romance: Somebody call the chaperone! This sort of thing isn’t supposed to happen.

47 Wild Things (1998)

The Kissers: Kelly Van Ryan (Denise Richards) and Suze Toller (Neve Campbell).

The Kiss: Shameless, gratuitous lesbian moment in a swimming pool, not that we’re complaining.

Passion Or Romance: It’s all part of a very elaborate con, but surely there’s a bit of genuine passion in there, too?

46 From Russia With Love (1963)

The Kissers: James Bond (Sean Connery) and Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianchi).

The Kiss: A woman lying in Bond’s bed, waiting for him and complaining her mouth is too big. “No, it’s the right size. For me, that is.” Even for 007, this is working fast.

45 William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Juliet (Claire Danes).

The Kiss: A joyful tumble from balcony to swimming pool after a fancy dress ball, with both still dressed in their highly symbolic costumes. He’s a knight, she’s an angel.

Passion Or Romance: Seriously, you need to ask? You didn’t learn about these star cross’d lovers in school?

44 My Girl (1991)

The Kissers: Thomas J. Sennett (Macauley Culkin) Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky).

The Kiss: First love, as these kids have to practice kissing their arms before attempting the real thing, and even then still with their eyes closed.

Passion Or Romance: Romance, of course. Anything else would be weird.

43 Sixteen Candles (1984)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Sam Baker (Molly Ringwald) and Jake Ryan (Michael Schoeffling)

The Kiss: After a disastrous 16th birthday, in which her family forget about her and Ted The Geek stalks her, Sam is given a cake – and a kiss – by the boy of her dreams.

Passion Or Romance: Presumably all girls dream of their 16th birthday being this romantic. Seldom few are.

42 A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

The Kissers: Joey Crusel (Rodney Eastman) and Marcie (Stacey Alden)

The Kiss: Marcie’s tongue sprouts into several parts and manacles Joey to the bed, and her face morphs into Freddy Krueger’s. And it was going so well, too.

Passion Or Romance: A case of Freddy taking advantage of Joey’s horniness to leave him “tongue-tied.”

41 Pretty Woman (1990)

The Kissers: Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) and Vivian (Julia Roberts).

The Kiss: A modern-day fairytale needs a modern-day castle, so Edward has to clamber up the fire exit to reach prostitute Vivian’s room.

Passion Or Romance: Romance, provided you can ignore the fact Edward had been paying for it up until now.

40 Atonement (2007)

The Kissers: Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy).

The Kiss: A furtive fumble in the library that causes shocked eavesdropper Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan) to jump to the wrong conclusions about servant Robbie.

Passion Or Romance: One, misinterpreted as the other.

39 The Quiet Man (1952)

The Kissers: Sean Thornton (John Wayne) and Mary Kate Danaher (Maureen O’Hara).

The Kiss: A violent clinch in a wild storm, in which Mary’s reaction to being kissed is to take a swing at Sean.

Passion Or Romance: He’s an ex-boxer, she’s a flame-haired siren. Doesn’t get much more passionate.

38 Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) and Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).

The Kiss: Thinking she’s pissed off Darcy, Bridget pursues him into a snowy street in her slob clothes.

Passion Or Romance: Mostly the latter, although “nice boys don’t kiss like that.”

37 The Goonies (1985)

The Kissers: Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin) and Andy Carmichael (Kerri Green).

The Kiss: An accident in the dark, as Andy kisses her boyfriend's kid brother. He gets away with it, too, despite his telltale braces.

Passion Or Romance: An 'in the moment' teenage fumble.

36 My Beautiful Laundrette (1985)

The Kissers: Omar (Gordon Warnecke) and Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis)

The Kiss: Celebrating the opening of Omar's Laundromat, Johnny takes a swig of champagne and dribbles it into Omar’s mouth.

Passion Or Romance: A bit of both. Bubbly, either way.

35 To Catch A Thief (1955)

The Kissers: Conrad Burns (Cary Grant) and Frances Stevens (Grace Kelly).

The Kiss: A typically cheeky affair from Alfred Hitchcock, as Frances seduces Conrad against the backdrop of a big - and highly suggestive - fireworks display.

Passion Or Romance: White-hot passion.

34 Twilight (2008)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

The Kiss: First base, but no further. Not when he’s a vampire who can barely control his desire to put his fangs into her.

Passion Or Romance: Strictly romance; the passion is deliberately on ice.

33 Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? (1967)

The Kissers: John Prentice (Sidney Poitier) and Joey Drayton (Katharine Houghton).

The Kiss: A engaged couple's fleeting embrace viewed through a taxi’s rear-view mirror.

Passion Or Romance: It’s love…but since he’s black, she’s white and this is the 1960s, Hollywood plays this landmark ultra-coy.

32 Lost In Translation (2003)

The Kissers: Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansen).

The Kiss: As almost-as-not-quite as their entire relationship, as Bob whispers an engimatic secret in her ear.

Passion Or Romance: More of a shared moment.

31 Rocky (1976)

The Kissers: Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and Adrian Pennino (Talia Shire).

The Kiss: Achieved after much negotiation, as Rocky butters her up by making her take off her unfashionable glasses and woolly cap.

Passion Or Romance: As romantic as this loveable lunk can manage – “I just wanna kiss ya.”

30 Dirty Dancing (1987)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) and Frances 'Baby' Houseman (Jennifer Grey).

The Kiss: Baby proves she's learnt some dirty moves as she dances into an embrace to Mickey and Sylvia's Love Is Strange.

Passion Or Romance: One creates the other.

29 Cruel Intentions (1999)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Geller) and Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair).

The Kiss: Kathryn teaches Cecile how to get to first base as part of a scheme to corrupt the innocent girl.

Passion Or Romance: “Cool!” according to Cecile.

28 The Shining (1980)

The Kissers: Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) and… well, just you wait and see.

The Kiss: Horny Jack is seduced into the Overlook Hotel’s spooky room 237 by a hottie, only for her to transform into a rotting harridan mid-snog.

Passion Or Romance: A typically stark, Kubrickian warning against passion.

27 Jerry Maguire (1996)

The Kissers: Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) and Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger).

The Kiss: Cynical sports agent Jerry interrupts ladies’ night to tell Dorothy she completes him...only to find “you had me at hello.”

Passion Or Romance: Cheesy, but romantic.

26 Shrek (2001)

The Kissers: Shrek (Mike Myers) and Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz).

The Kiss: Shrek interrupts Fiona’s sham wedding to Lord Farquaad by planting true love’s kiss on her physog, not realising he’s about to break a curse that will see her become all-ogre.

Passion Or Romance: With looks like his, it’s gotta be love.

25 When Harry Met Sally (1989)

The Kissers: Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan).

The Kiss: Long-delayed by their insistence on being just friends, but what better time than New Year’s Eve to ensure old acquaintances aren’t forgot?

Passion Or Romance: A classic description of the latter – “when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

24 An Officer and a Gentleman (1982)

The Kissers: Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) and Paula Pokrifki (Debra Winger).

The Kiss: Did somebody call a Strippogram? Nah, it’s Paula’s on/off boyf Zack, finally committing by sweeping her off her feet and walking her out of work.

Passion Or Romance: Ultra-romantic, which is probably for the best considering she’ll probably get sacked.

23 E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

The Kissers: Elliott (Henry Thomas) and unnamed classmate (Erika Eleniak).

The Kiss: The telepathic link between E.T. and Elliott causes the latter to recreate the classic kissing scene from The Quiet Man (which E.T. is watching at home) in the classroom.

Passion Or Romance: Romance-by-proxy, with added sweetness because Elliott needs to stand on a classmate to reach the girl’s lips.

22 Some Like It Hot (1959)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Sugar Kane Kowalski (Marilyn Monroe) and Joe (Tony Curtis).

The Kiss: He fancies her rotten, but since he’s a no-good musician, he’s pretending to be a millionaire. Oh, and he’s pretending to be unmoved by her kisses so she thinks she’s seducing him. Confused, yet?

Passion Or Romance: An unusual one, this - it's passion disguised by fake frigidity.

21 Amelie (2001)

The Kissers: Amelie (Audrey Tautou) and Nino Quincampoix (Matthieu Kassovitz).

The Kiss: Ever-quirky Amelie drags Nino into her apartment and gives him a series of playful kisses, before instructing him to do the same.

Passion Or Romance: Kissing this whimsical can’t be anything other than romantic.

20 Ghost (1990)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and Molly Jensen (Demi Moore)

The Kiss: Unhindered by the fact he’s dead, although this is their last game of tonsil tennis before he heads off to the afterlife.

Passion Or Romance: It’s love that’s kept Sam around long enough to say goodbye.

19 Mulholland Dr. (2001)

The Kissers: Camilla Rhodes (Laura Elena Harring) and another Camilla Rhodes (Melissa George). Eh?

The Kiss: Designed largely to upset struggling actress Diane Selwyn (Naomi Watts), whose luckier alter-ego Betty Elms had successfully bedded Camilla's lookalike 'Rita.'

Passion Or Romance: Mostly it's just enigmatic, although its hotness can't be disputed.

18 It's A Wonderful Life (1946)

The Kissers: George Bailey (James Stewart) and Mary (Donna Reed).

The Kiss: Conflicted George loves Donna, but doesn’t want to get trapped in Bedford Falls – so he shakes her, shouts at her, and only then gives in to his feelings.

Passion Or Romance: Not exactly the textbook definition of romance, but the emotion is real enough.

17 Gone With The Wind (1939)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) and Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh)

The Kiss: Rhett proposes to Scarlett against the backdrop of Atlanta burning, the flame-red sky merging with Scarlett’s hair.

Passion Or Romance: She gives him a slap for his presumption, but she still ends up marrying him.

16 Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

The Kissers: Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen).

The Kiss: With injured Indy not wanting Marion to tend to his wounds, she starts kissing the places that don’t hurt. Including his lips.

Passion Or Romance: A lovely, romantic grace note amongst all the set-pieces.

15 The Princess Bride (1987)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright).

The Kiss: Let’s leave it to Peter Falk’s narrator to explain this one: "Since the invention of the kiss there have been five kisses that were rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.”

Passion Or Romance: So romantic not even the narrator’s grandson (Fred Savage) can complain about the kissing parts.

14 Vertigo (1958)

The Kissers: Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) and Judy Barton (Kim Novak).

The Kiss: Having transformed Judy into a facsimile of his dead lover Madeleine, their kiss transports Scottie into the memory of a previous clinch.

Passion Or Romance: For him, it’s closer to obsession. For her, any genuine feelings are stymied by the irony that - SPOILER! - Madeleine was really Judy all along.

13 Four Weddings And a Funeral (1994)

The Kissers: Charles (Hugh Grant) and Carrie (Andie McDowall).

The Kiss: Tired of the rigmarole of seeing people get married, Charles gives Carrie an anti-proposal in the rain.

Passion Or Romance: Not even Carrie’s wooden weather forecast (“Is it raining? I hadn’t noticed”) can dampen the romance.

12 Breakfast At Tiffany's (1961)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) and Paul Varjak (George Peppard).

The Kiss: Seeing Paul hunt for her missing cat in the rain sparks the sudden realisation that Holly loves him, too. Cue Moon River.

Passion Or Romance: They’re so lost in the moment it takes them a while to spot they’re crushing the cat between them.

11 The Godfather Part 2 (1974)

The Kissers: Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and his brother Fredo (John Cazale).

The Kiss: Bitter. This is Michael kissing Fredo goodbye for betraying him – “I know it was you. You broke my heart, Fredo.”

Passion Or Romance: Strictly business.

10 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson).

The Kiss: Y’know, that kiss. The one they’ve been building up to for a decade.

Passion Or Romance: The cute smiles after the kiss give it away - these kids are in love. Bless.

9 Titanic (1997)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose DeWitt Brubaker (Kate Winslet).

The Kiss: On top of the world. Or, technically, at the front of a big boat.

Passion Or Romance: Seeing that they don’t start shagging there and then on the deck, we have to assume it’s the real deal.

8 Lady And The Tramp (1955)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: A classy cocker spaniel (Lady) and a mongrel (Tramp).

The Kiss: Al fresco becomes al frisky as the dogs’ dinner sees them sharing spaghetti.

Passion Or Romance: C’mon, Tramp loves Lady enough to give her his last meatball. What do you think?

7 Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal).

The Kiss: One-time lovers Ennis and Jack meet up and, despite both being married – in fact, Ennis’ missus is watching – the reunited pair lock faces.

Passion Or Romance: It started as passion, but by now it’s a full-blown love story.

6 Casablanca (1942)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) and Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman).

The Kiss: Reunited in Morocco because Ilsa needs Rick’s help saving her new husband from the Nazis, these old flames realise they still share sparks.

Passion Or Romance: The film’s theme song reckons “a kiss is just a kiss,” but this is proof of one of the screen’s most heartfelt romances.

5 Spider-Man (2002)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: ‘Spiderman’ aka Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) and Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).

The Kiss: Mary Jane thanks Spidey for rescuing her with a kiss, even though he’s hanging upside-down.

Passion Or Romance: Superhero fetish. It’s probably the mask that’s turning her on.

4 The Notebook (2004)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling).

The Kiss: A reunion in the rain after years apart. Allie thinks Noah never wrote to her, but when she finds out he wrote a love letter every day, it's lip-locking time.

Passion Or Romance: “It still isn’t over” – not when the romance is this strong.

3 Back To The Future (1985)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: George McFly (Crispin Glover) and Lorraine Baines (Lea Thompson).

The Kiss: History in the (re)making. Not only is Marty McFly's future saved, but George will no longer be a doormat for Biff Tannen.

Passion Or Romance: Pure enchantment, and not just under the sea.

2 The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Scoundrel Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher).

The Kiss: Having fallen in love during their escape from the Empire, Leia isn’t about to let the small matter of Han being frozen in carbonite prevent their first kiss.

Passion Or Romance: “I love you.” “I know.” The most romantic kiss in sci-fi, although the follow-up in Return of The Jedi – as Leia reunites with blind Han – nearly matches it.

1 From Here To Eternity (1953)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Kissers: Milton Warden (Burt Lancaster) and Karen Holmes (Deborah Kerr).

The Kiss: The iconic ‘snogging in the surf’ scene, memorably parodied by Airplane! and most likely copied by everyone who's ever had some seaside lovin'.

Passion Or Romance: Karen’s married, so her clinch with Milton is pure passion. No wonder they need to cool down in those Pacific waves.

Yes, but I still like it. I just wish the old people parts would gtfo
rubykatewriting Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 03:57 am (UTC)
THIS. That is the worst part of the film for me. Hello! There's no mystery here as to who "Duke" is because again - HEL-to-the-fuck-LO - no man is going to read a love story about his girl and some other bloke.

whut? oh hell no. that's such an awful opinion :( i loved their parts. i admittedly cried at their parts because my great grandma had dementia it was scary seeing it irl let alone in a movie! :(
lilienveigh Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 04:14 am (UTC)
stfu! The only good thing about that movie is Gena Rowlands and James Garner.
fil0li Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 05:50 am (UTC)
Idawtc. The elderly couple scenes are the only parts of the film that I found romantic and touching. The rest of the movie was just cheesy and bland imo

I really do like it, but I didn't cry or anything, so yes. I've heard girls say their boyfriends cried and shit, and I'm just like, "REALLY???" Lol A Walk to Remember was much sadder. Cried like a baby.
anniemann101 Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 03:57 am (UTC)
no. and i don't think it's a love story either. the love part of it goes straight over my head when i think of that movie. life and aging is the first thing i think of when someone so much as mentions that film to me.

yes
lovejoydiver Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 04:15 am (UTC)
Yes, and it's creepier how people try to project that relationship onto McGosling or whatever.
tlcspice Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 04:16 am (UTC)
yes. I was disappointed when I saw it. Everyone was like "the ending is so sad". When I saw I was like "oh that's it?".

Now "A Walk To Remember", that shit was SAD. Made me cry a bit.
lillylilacs Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 04:21 am (UTC)
Y

I don't know if I would say overrated so much as I would say I h8 that movie and think everything about it is terrible.

Yes, and it is, but that doesn't stop it from being a pretty good romantic movie.
captchasucks Re: Do People Think The Notebook Is Overrated-19th-Jul-2011 06:25 am (UTC)
yes.

it's sad, their relationship was tumultuous, wahhhhhhhh... but meh.

I love everything this movie chooses to be. I seriously thought I was going to get a straightforward romantic comedy when I read the description, and then it went fucking nuts and dark on me. I wish more romances would bend the genre like this.
thelake 19th-Jul-2011 06:44 am (UTC)
love the movie except the shitty ending.
