Of Saoirse Ronan… and Itaril

Ever since a “casting call” for The Hobbit found its way on to the internet back in January 2010, fans have been wondering much concerning the role of the Elf-maiden (or alternately, Elf warrior-wench!) who’ll supposedly go by the name of Itaril and fall in love with with a young Elf-lord.

It wasn’t long before fans began speculating the casting for the role and, subsequently, Saoirse Ronan got linked to it. But much fun as the speculation was (and is), neither the rumoured role nor the rumoured casting choice have gone down well with many fans. And whether or not the rumours had a ring of truth to them was anyone’s guess.

Come January 2011 and the media has finally gotten to catching up with Saoirse Ronan and asking her directly concerning the possibility of her being cast in the upcoming films. From RTE.ie:

The Oscar-nominated Irish actress is strongly rumoured to be in talks to play the character Itaril in the films, but she did not reveal any further details at the launch of the IFTAs in Dublin yesterday.
When asked if she would like to play the role, she replied: “Yeah if I was asked, certainly.”

Her father Paul said that it would be great if she landed the Hobbit part, but did not say if she had been asked.
He told journalists: “It would be something that would be wonderful if it happens. I don’t think all of the cast members have been chosen or asked yet because it’s going to be such a long project.
“It’s going to take a long time. She worked with Peter on ‘The Lovely Bones’. After a couple of weeks with working with Peter it’s like being part of his family.
“It would be wonderful to see them all again and to work with them again.”

She and Jackson are butt buddies, makes perfect sense to me.

If you've made it a point to picture a middle aged man sexually engaged with a teenager, you may indeed be fucked and inappropriate. :)
bulimia 20th-Jan-2011 04:08 pm (UTC)
I haven't read the books, why is she wrong for it? She's lovely and a wonderful actress
adlanth 20th-Jan-2011 04:10 pm (UTC)
I think the objections are against the character (which doesn't exist in the books), not the actress.
bulimia 20th-Jan-2011 05:14 pm (UTC)
oh lol ^_^
hocus_pocus 20th-Jan-2011 04:23 pm (UTC)
Mte. The character doesn't exist in the books but I love Saoirse
bollyhood 20th-Jan-2011 04:10 pm (UTC)
This probably gets asked in every post about her, but how does one pronounce her name?
hocus_pocus 20th-Jan-2011 04:22 pm (UTC)
sher-shah
iamalreadyinuse 20th-Jan-2011 04:56 pm (UTC)
I've heard Seer-sha.
crackitycrackho 20th-Jan-2011 05:07 pm (UTC)
This is it ^
little_ponette 20th-Jan-2011 06:15 pm (UTC)
I heard someone pronounce it like Sorsha, in some interview or other, like the character in Willow.
ruby_chalice 20th-Jan-2011 04:11 pm (UTC)
No.

flyingpigs_live 20th-Jan-2011 04:11 pm (UTC)
i really like her, she's lovely.
jbramsey 20th-Jan-2011 04:14 pm (UTC)
I want to be Sméagol's friend, but it was made very clear to me that Sméagol doesn't have any friends.
adlanth 20th-Jan-2011 04:26 pm (UTC)
Dobby's his friend (but not Gollum's).
hocus_pocus 20th-Jan-2011 04:24 pm (UTC)
Love her.
babbss 20th-Jan-2011 04:29 pm (UTC)
Man her eyes are stunning.
hetshepsit 20th-Jan-2011 04:30 pm (UTC)
I love me some mini-Cate Blanchett, but NO THANK YOU.

Creating new characters, for the sake of adding romance to the plot... lol why? It's an already complicated and character filled world... so unnecessary. Isn't there younger Arwen/young Aragorn flashback footage lying around? At least that's canon.

That's enough, PJ.
gm_infinity 20th-Jan-2011 04:30 pm (UTC)
I really like her. Her eyes are gorgeous.
plentydorian 20th-Jan-2011 04:46 pm (UTC)
I'd love her to be in it! But not as a new character, I'm worrying enough about it deviating as it is :S
oyechulo 20th-Jan-2011 04:46 pm (UTC)
she's so pretty it's not fair
kitsch_deluxxe 20th-Jan-2011 04:47 pm (UTC)
I like her and the idea of Itaril, tbh. But I don't think it's going to happen since the character is not in the book.

Gosh, what would I do to be in New Zealand with Aidan Turner right now. <3

crayzee_mouse 20th-Jan-2011 08:29 pm (UTC)
I know right? *daydreams*
spankmypirate WHAT20th-Jan-2011 04:49 pm (UTC)
Are they seriously creating a new character?? For romance? What kind of Mary Sue shit is this? PJ, I've been side eyeing you since The Lovely Bones, please don't fuck this up as well.
ben_superdetka 20th-Jan-2011 04:55 pm (UTC)
as usual, i'll just take a seat over here...
miakun 20th-Jan-2011 04:56 pm (UTC)
If they don't create this character are there even going to be any women in the movie? It's been a while since I read the Hobbit.
andromakhe001 20th-Jan-2011 05:02 pm (UTC)
A few minor characters probably but so what if there are no woman? I have no problem whatsoever watching a film with all male characters.

I hate it when they stick some female character in a story where there weren't any just to give it some "token female" presence.
miakun 20th-Jan-2011 05:04 pm (UTC)
I have no problem whatsoever watching a film with all male characters.

Hurray for you? Media in general already caters to you. Go you.

I trust Peter Jackson not to add a character and make them feel like a token anything, so I'm not worried.
adlanth 20th-Jan-2011 05:03 pm (UTC)
...Lobelia Sackville-Baggins? Not that she's mentioned by name, but.
PJ&co are already adding Galadriel, though.
tothestars 20th-Jan-2011 05:05 pm (UTC)
Was it Legolas or Arwen they were bringing back?
miakun 20th-Jan-2011 05:07 pm (UTC)
They are rumors about getting Orlando Bloom back to reprise his role, so I'd assume Legolas. I'm pretty sure he's in the book too, but god it's been forever since I've read it.
tothestars 20th-Jan-2011 05:23 pm (UTC)
Same lol, all I can remember from the Hobbit is the trolls and Smaug, everything else is a complete blur.
miakun 20th-Jan-2011 05:06 pm (UTC)
Oh cool. They should have the space to add some more if they're making two film.
adlanth 20th-Jan-2011 05:24 pm (UTC)
Oh hello Denethor.
There's space, sure, I just don't know what storyline they could add. I don't know... I liked the way they expanded Arwen's role, I can see how they'd add Frodo or Galadriel to The Hobbit, but inventing new characters?
miakun 20th-Jan-2011 05:35 pm (UTC)
Maybe it'll have to do with the Galadriel plotline? I don't know. I really loved all the changes they made to the LotR films (except the cutting of the Faramir/Eowyn stuff, but I get it, time constraints and that's what the extended editions are for), so I'm going to stay tentatively optimistic about the whole thing.
tothestars 20th-Jan-2011 04:58 pm (UTC)
Kaya Scodelario auditioned for a part in this, I wonder if it's the same character.

Also, Saoirse is absolutely beautiful & such a lovely actress, it'd be great to see her in the Hobbit.

kitsch_deluxxe 20th-Jan-2011 05:15 pm (UTC)
Really, she auditioned for a part? Thats interesting..I wonder what part.
tothestars 20th-Jan-2011 05:17 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure she mentioned it in an interview a couple of months ago, can't for the life of me remember what one though. I can almost see her as a young Arwen ngl, but I have no idea. Purely because of the dark hair/big blue eyes and pale skin combo but that's about it haha.
adlanth 20th-Jan-2011 05:26 pm (UTC)
Hehe. They'd have to go further than The Hobbit for a young Arwen though.
cuteej4 20th-Jan-2011 05:45 pm (UTC)
I just started reading The Hobbit for the first time...

I'm not very far. They just got attacked by Goblins and are trying to run away from them.
crayzee_mouse 20th-Jan-2011 08:32 pm (UTC)
I don't like the idea of them adding more characters / storylines to the movies. I'd prefer them to stick as close as possible to the novel -- PJ did that for LOTR and they turned out pretty great. Here's hoping he does the same for this project.
spider_rogue 20th-Jan-2011 09:30 pm (UTC)
Mehhhhh. If it's the only way we'll get more than one female character, then fine. Love Saoirse though, and I can't wait for Hanna!
junolovesmars 21st-Jan-2011 02:55 am (UTC)
Totes excited for Hanna
That's it
rileycakes 21st-Jan-2011 02:37 pm (UTC)
she's gorgeous, but also she looks a lot like a female lee pace
which isn't a bad thing
just sayin'
