For some reason, it would be a lot more contentious if a footballer were to come out than a rugby player. I say for some reason, but footballing culture is a lot more full on, shall we say, than rugby.

It has happened in the past. Didn't end well.

omg he is so hot. And best of luck to him! His father and coach and team are just awesome. I don't agree with him marrying a woman and not telling her, but this is so difficult, and so sad that he was in such a bad situation that he needed to do that. :(

Yeah, that is a nice interview. Of course I never denied, this situation must have been so difficult for him. I have no doubt that he cared about her, because he said she was his best friend. I also have no doubt that he tried to be straight, and that's what I find so sad, too. It's that we live in a situation that obliges people to still do that.

There's Matthew Mitcham, the Aussie diver, but they must have come out at about the same time and I definitely haven't heard of anyone else major. I doubt Mitcham is pro since he won gold at the Olympics and you can't be pro to enter, I don't think. It's really, really rare to be an out queer athlete. And there's no-one who's out in the figure skating world of whom I'm aware (Johnny Weir is not explicitly out, even though he's obviously queer). I know here in NZ we've got a snowboarder, but he's not even well known within NZ, let alone internationally.

There aren't actually any openly gay figure skaters competing right now. There are some that everyone who has more than a passing interest in skating knows are gay, but none of them have come out directly. The last one I can think of was Rudy Galindo, and I think even he waited until he had finished competing.

I think he is the only in a sports team that has come out while still competing.

There is an Aussie rugby player Ian Roberts who came out after retiring and also Matthew Mitcham who is an openly gay diver and won gold for Australia in the last olympics.

but yeah, its pretty sad...

it gives me hope that his teammates were so accepting. i just had an argument with someone two days ago about gay marriage and gay couples being able to adopt. i swear to god, it took every ounce of energy i had to maintain my cool and keep it a civil conversation. especially since nobody took my side. some people, jfc.
