The Top 5 Gifs Of All Timez~~~~ An ONTD Original!
It seems like no matter how many words you use, one solid Gif can express what you are feeling at the moment. Whether you are excited, sad, angry, confused etc, there is a Gif in the interwebz to show it! So I decided to compile a list of the best gifs of all timez!
OF.ALL.TIMEZ!
The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability.
So.....basically an animated image.
The List
Since there are so many gifs in the internet, I decided to compile them by 5 individual categories.
5.) The "Shit Just Got Real" Gifs
Origin:
My understanding of how it came about was from this clip from the film Bad Boys starring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith
How Its Used:
When ever something of epic proportions goes down that was not expected. For example, in this post where Lindsay Lohan was due in court, everyone assumed that she would walk out of that court a free woman, but instead gets cuffed in the court room and sent off to jail. Since that was not expected, that would be the perfect opportunity to use a "Shit Just Got Real" gif.
4.) The "Too Long, Didn't Read" Gifs
Origin:
Not exactly sure how it started or how it came about, but the phrase "Too Long, Didn't Read" or "TL;DR" has been popularized on forums like 4Chan and communities like ONTD. "TL;DR" started out as a still image meme, but slowly started to become into gif form when the phrase "TL;DR" was put onto animated images.
How Its Used:
When ever something is not brief enough to read in one sitting. For example, in this post, the OP failed to bold any of the important/interesting parts of the story. Thus, making the whole post un-readable and/or boring.
3.) The "NO1CURR" Gifs
Origin:
From my knowledge, "NO1CURR" (which is short for the phrase "No one cares") was originally coined by an LJ member in a spin-off ONTD community. It soon made its way to the original ONTD and spread like herpes.
How its used:
To inform someone that something/someone is not important or worthy of discussion. You will mostly see a "NO1CURR" gif used heavily when stan wars occur or when there is a post about someone who is widely regarded as a "basic bitch" or a "stranger ho" on ONTD. For example, in this post an ONTD member made a post about Ciara. According to the general consensus amongst ONTD members, Ciara (also known as C-Error) would fall under the "basic bitch" category. Thus, any information regarding C-Error and her flop would be met with a "NO1CURR" gif.
2.) The Whoopi Goldberg "U In Danga Gurl" Gif
Origin:
The gif comes from a scene in the 1990 film Ghost in which Whoopi starred.
How Its Used:
When ever a comment is made that goes against the general notions of ONTD as a whole. The gif is often used to inform the person that made the comment that they are going to receive an influx of comments such as "GTFO" or "DIAF", and that they should either retract the comment or find a way to redeem themselves. For example, in this post about the premiere of Kanye West's video for Power ( which was filled with love and celebration) an ONTD member ruined the fun by saying something contrary to the feeling of the post. As you can clearly see, the comment was met with a shit ton of "LOL NO" and "GTFO"'. If only there was a "U In Danja Gurl" gif to warn them ahead of time!!
1.) The "Side-Eye/ Judging You" Gifs
Origin:
The first recorded "side eye" dates back to the 16th century when Nicolaus Copernicus dared to tell people that the earth was not the center of the universe. He was met with a bunch of "GURL PLEASE" and "GURL STOP" but of course, since his theory has since been proven to be correct anyone who dared to say different is now met with the side-eye.
Nicolaus Copernicus judging you basic hos
How Its Used:
The official definition on Urban Dictionary explains it perfectly:
"A facial expression expressing one's criticism, disapproval, animosity, or scorn of varying levels of intensity towards another person. Defined by one person looking at the other out of the corner of their eye(s) with a scowl, as their head is turned in a different direction. Often an invitation for a fight or confrontation of some sort. Synonymous expression: "cuttin' your eyes" (at someone). Popular expression (and common occurrence) among urban American populations."
For example, in this post about Kesha where she claims that she has vocal ability. Anyone with ears knows this is not the truth, so her comment or anyone who would agree would deserve the side-eye gif.
Honorable Mentions
The "LOL WHITE PEOPLE" Gifs
Origin:
The "LOL white people" was made as a reaction or response to when a white person is either a.) acting a fool and needs to be put in check or b.) is unaware of the amount of privilege they possess as a white person in society.
How Its Used:
Often times the "LOL white people" gif is used during posts about race. With any post about race comes the usual wank, where a white person compares the plight of minorities to that of white people and/or makes the assumption that there is such thing as "reverse racism" (see this post)
The "Prince SMH" Gif
Origin:
probably one of the most known and hilarious gifs on the internet comes from a scene in Prince's music video Black Sweat
How Its Used:
This gif is used as a reaction to any shocking/disgusting/weird/down right wrong comment. I will make example comments to show how versatile the gif actually is
"Christina Aguilera's Bionic was her best-selling CD"
"Jonah Hill is physically attractive"
"Megan Fox is a better actress than Meryl Streep"
"Katy Perry's live singing is amazing"
"OT: BUT OMG I GOT MY PERIOD LAST WEEK AND I HAVEN'T TAKEN A SHOWER SINCE"
See how great this gif is?
The "Deal With It" Gif
Origin:
According to Knowyourmeme.com:
"“Deal With It” in its own is a rather common colloquialism. Though Google Insights’ search queries reveal a noticeable spike in mid-2007, this can be largely attributed to the High School Musical singer Corbin Bleu’s song “Deal With It,” which was released in May 2007."
How its used:
Its is mostly used as a reponse to haters who cannot take a fact for what it is. It also can be used as a defense mechanism for when someone is too dumb/too lazy to come up with a logical reponse
