20 Best TV Couples of All Time

From Lucy and Ricky to "Moonlighting's" David and Maddie, we've highlighted 20 TV couples who've had the sexiest, zaniest and most romantic chemistry to ever grace the small screen. Best TV Couples of All TImeMaddie Hayes and David Addison ("Moonlighting")

When ex-model Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) loses most of her money in a bad investment, all she has left is a rundown detective agency run by the irascible P.I. David Addison (Bruce Willis). He convinces her to come in as the new boss rather than sell it, and the two begin to work together. A match made in heaven — or hell, depending on how you look at it. Shepherd and Willis totally nail it.

Jonathan and Jennifer Hart ("Hart to Hart")
As the Harts, Robert Wagner and Stephanie Powers have just the right chemistry, the Nick and Nora Charles of television. They are a fun-loving, filthy rich couple who like to solve crimes in between jet-setting all over the world.

Mac and Sally McMillian ("McMillian & Wife")
San Francisco attorney Stewart "Mac" McMillan (Rock Hudson) is named Commissioner of the San Francisco Police Department, and along with his sharp-witted, but somewhat kooky, wife Sally (Susan Saint James), Mac manages to solve some of the city's most baffling crimes. A favorite of the classic Sunday night mysteries.

Mike and Carol Brady ("The Brady Bunch")
Robert Reed and Florence Henderson brought as much spark to the wholesome Brady couple as was possibly allowed on TV in the 1960s. Kudos for making us believe Mike and Carol would stay together so long with all those kids.

Lucy and Ricky Ricardo ("I Love Lucy")
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz are definitely one of the most indelible TV couples of all time. One wonders why Ricky didn't strangle Lucy for all her screw-ups, but that's what made them so lovable.

Sam Malone and Diane Chambers ("Cheers")
The completely mismatched Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) probably never had a chance in hell of staying together — she is prim and proper, he is a former baseball star-turned-bar owner — but it is sure fun watching them try to make it work. Danson and Long have never been better than when they are bickering as Sam and Diane.

Roseanne and Dan Conner ("Roseanne")
Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) and her stalwart hubby Dan (John Goodman) showed us a real blue-collar marriage, full of ups and downs but lots of love.

Rachel Green and Ross Geller ("Friends")
Never did we want two people to get together more than Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston). He's loved her since they were in high school, and she finally realizes, after many misfires, that he is her soul mate.

Cliff and Claire Huxtable ("The Cosby Show")
Claire (Phylicia Rashad) and Cliff (Bill Cosby) represent one of the hippest married TV couples of all time, juggling successful careers with raising their five kids. And eating Jello pudding... just kidding.

Will Truman and Grace Adler ("Will & Grace")
They aren't an official couple per se, but Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing) are still roommates... and soul mates. They definitely go down in the annals of best TV couples.

(yes they deserve the biggest picture)
Buffy and Angel ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer")
Before Edward and Bella, there was Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Angel (David Boreanaz). Buffy is a sworn vampire hunter, but she can't kill the one vampire who has ever understood her. At least he tries to be a good vampire.

Homer and Marge Simpson ("The Simpsons")
One wonders how Marge puts up with her selfish, idiotic husband, but he's her Homey, and their love has endured the many trials and tribulations Homer has brought to their life.

Bob and Emily Hartley ("The Bob Newhart Show")
Psychologist Bob (Bob Newhart) wouldn't be the same without his grounded wife, Emily (Suzanne Pleshette) to keep him —00000000000 and their sometimes crazy life — in line.

Morticia and Gomez Addams ("The Addams Family")
When Gomez (John Astin) woos his beloved wife Morticia (Carolyn Jones), he begins by reciting French, kissing her hand, then her wrist, then up her arm to her neck. For a gothic 1960s family, that's pretty racy. Go Gomez!

Joey and Pacey ("Dawson's Creek")
Sure, Joey (Katie Holmes) grew up loving her best friend and neighbor Dawson (James van der Beek), but once she got a little taste of the wacky Pacey (Joshua Jackson), that was all she wrote.

Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly ("The Office")
From flirting to romancing to marriage and babies, Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) have taken the art of the office romance to new levels.

Paul and Jamie Buchman ("Mad About You")
Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt showed some of the best chemistry on TV ever as the Buchmans, two New Yorkers trying to have a normal, happy marriage. They are, after all, mad about each other.

Rob and Laura Petrie ("The Dick Van Dyke Show")
As another classic TV couple, Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) knows just the right thing to say to calm her neurotic husband Rob (Dick Van Dyke) down — except when it's his turn to calm her down. "Oh, Rob!"

Sawyer and Juliet ("Lost")
There were many couplings on the twisty "Lost," but none of them held as much resonance as the love story between Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell), who found each other under some very unusual circumstances.

Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big ("Sex and the City")
Carrie's (Sarah Jessica Parker)on-again, off-again romance with Big (Chris Noth) has given her a lot of grief through the years but also much joy. And through it all, they knew in their hearts they were destined to be together.

my top 3 are..
Buffy & Angel
Roseanne & Dan
Joey & Pacey

what's your favs ONTD?

WAG!! I miss them so much. :(

Big & Carrie suck as a fuckin' couple. Horrible relationship made even worse by the movies.
[info]ohsuplovely 23rd-Aug-2010 02:53 am (UTC)
ia i hated carrie and big sfm
[info]amy774 23rd-Aug-2010 02:56 am (UTC)
yup just came in here to say I hate Carrie and Big.
[info]woah_fierce 23rd-Aug-2010 02:58 am (UTC)
Yess her and Aiden were perfect together. She was a dumb bitch for cheating on him
[info]itsrelaxicab 23rd-Aug-2010 03:09 am (UTC)
MTE. Aiden is perfect and Carrie's an idiot.
[info]cricketgrl 23rd-Aug-2010 03:10 am (UTC)
Yup and they definitely still had unfinished business.

Aidan got his revenge in the end. Carrie wound up with her "un-gettable get" only to be bored with him in the end. Big&Carrie was the portrayal of dysfunctional women that are addicted to abusive relationships.
[info]hatteras 23rd-Aug-2010 03:37 am (UTC)
aidan was always too good for carrie. she and big deserved each other.
[info]sleepysongbird 23rd-Aug-2010 03:40 am (UTC)
love carrie but she didn't deserve aiden
[info]juanbomb 23rd-Aug-2010 04:54 am (UTC)
I hate Aiden with all my heart. He's absolutely pathetic.

I don't like Big very much either, I really liked the russian...I know it's not a popular opinion but idgaf.
[info]guccipostagurl 23rd-Aug-2010 03:05 am (UTC)
Really? He was the only guy I ever liked for her.
[info]browneyedguuurl 23rd-Aug-2010 03:27 am (UTC)
This! Big was a dick and she was a self involved shrew. Hated them SFM! Aidan FTW!
[info]07janina07 23rd-Aug-2010 03:53 am (UTC)
Big was such an asshole, I could never understand why she would cheat on Aiden, he was perfect.
[info]trinimacphisto 23rd-Aug-2010 03:54 am (UTC)
ikr! Carri and Big is ridiculous!

Carrie and the dude she almost married that made4 furniture, that was good.
[info]teetersslow 23rd-Aug-2010 11:56 am (UTC)
icon love :)
[info]zimtsticker 23rd-Aug-2010 12:18 pm (UTC)
completely agree with you there. i hated big, aidan would've been the perfect guy.
[info]aleronihead 23rd-Aug-2010 04:21 pm (UTC)
OMG I hate them together. They brought out the worst in each other - as a couple, they were intolerable as individuals.
[info]flumes 23rd-Aug-2010 02:52 am (UTC)
i only like white people why are you so racist
[info]osnapitsrj 23rd-Aug-2010 02:53 am (UTC)

[info]watermeloncholy 23rd-Aug-2010 10:36 pm (UTC)

Turk and Carla
[info]moddchicc 23rd-Aug-2010 02:56 am (UTC)
IA with Eric and Donna
[info]hidemythunder 23rd-Aug-2010 03:06 am (UTC)
i think j.d. and turk are a better couple ;)

but turk and carla are also quite amazing!
[info]teetersslow 23rd-Aug-2010 11:59 am (UTC)
their bromance in the last scrubs series was the stuff of legends!
[info]joordanlee 23rd-Aug-2010 03:11 am (UTC)
Turk and Carla are so underrated. I think it's how real their relationship was. It wasn't the stereotypical will they/won't they and they had really tough times to go along with the good. And their chemistry was ridiculous.

/overshare of thoughts on Turk and Carla, sorry bb ;)
[info]fendurbendur 23rd-Aug-2010 03:11 am (UTC)
YES to Turk and Carla.
[info]tartarsaauce 23rd-Aug-2010 03:16 am (UTC)
Turk and Carla! Yes yes yes!
[info]fulla_kharisma 23rd-Aug-2010 07:07 pm (UTC)
Ooh, two of my favorite pairings from two of my favorite tv shows!

Eric and Donna are just amazing. I got so pissed off when Randy was brought in on season 8 as a replacement for Eric. Just...Randy, Donna? Once you go scrawny Star Wars nerd, you never go back...or something.
[info]406 23rd-Aug-2010 02:51 am (UTC)
Oh Jesus GOD I hated "Mad About You." I thought I had finally forgotten it existed.

Of this list, I like Bob & Emily Hartley the best I think.
[info]steph313 23rd-Aug-2010 02:52 am (UTC)
You know, I'd actually forgotten all about that show too. Completely forgot about it's existence.
[info]406 23rd-Aug-2010 02:59 am (UTC)
It used to be in syndication all the fucking time (in the U.S. at least) and I was happy when it faded into obscurity. "Friends" I hope you are next!
[info]scotchsour 23rd-Aug-2010 03:15 am (UTC)
Funny the thing I like about "Mad about You" was the last episode where you knew they had divorced. Shows like theirs like to give the audience the happy ending and what was great is they gave us the opposite.
[info]pivotandsway 23rd-Aug-2010 04:07 am (UTC)
just thinking about the shitty theme song makes me ill lol
[info]misscrystal 23rd-Aug-2010 04:17 am (UTC)
UGH, me, too. It was such a "I'm an adult in the 90s" type show. It lacked the lightheartedness of Friends and the brutal honesty of Roseanne. It was such shit.
[info]d_a_r_a_h_3 23rd-Aug-2010 05:21 am (UTC)
me too, and at a time when i was too young to hate anything that came on television :[ i hated that and that show with the fat guy in ohio..with the man-woman with all the makeup. ugh.
[info]boobookittyass 23rd-Aug-2010 07:20 am (UTC)
Totally agree. This list would be invalid without The Hartleys.
[info]wrongsideoftown 23rd-Aug-2010 02:51 am (UTC)
ROSS AND RACHEL
[info]mrbnatural 23rd-Aug-2010 03:38 am (UTC)

YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES

I liked Ross and Rachel but I just got so sick of their will-they-won't-they drama.
[info]dawn9476 23rd-Aug-2010 01:57 pm (UTC)
They were awesome.
[info]mrezkill 23rd-Aug-2010 05:25 pm (UTC)

[info]flumes 23rd-Aug-2010 02:51 am (UTC)

yayayayayyayy roseanne and dan <333333333333 i always secretly had a little crush on john goodman
ok maybe i still do

oh here's some trivia ONTD
in real life, fred and ethel hated each other :( lucy and desi had to break up fights and shit
[info]flumes 23rd-Aug-2010 02:52 am (UTC)
Oh that's sad. I heard Ethel didn't like Lucy either?
[info]razetora 23rd-Aug-2010 03:04 am (UTC)
I doubt it, my mom's a Lucy stan, and she says her and Ethel were best friends IRL.
[info]indy788 23rd-Aug-2010 03:13 am (UTC)
No they loved each other. They even did a series together after I Love Lucy. Vivian Vance just hated that Ethel was supposed to be older even though her and Lucille Ball were around the same age.
[info]sillycucumber 23rd-Aug-2010 09:07 am (UTC)
She was just kind of jealous that she was frumpy and Lucy was the star. They didn't hate each other, though.
[info]mrezkill 23rd-Aug-2010 05:27 pm (UTC)
false
[info]cscgrl4life 23rd-Aug-2010 02:54 am (UTC)
Omg yes I used to love John Goodman! (still do lol)
[info]sinfulroad 23rd-Aug-2010 03:09 am (UTC)
STOPPP. I HATE WHEN MY MOM REMINDS ME THAT THEY HATED EACH OTHER. In my mind, they got along great. And Lucy and Desi never broke up.
[info]xtinkerbellax 23rd-Aug-2010 03:25 am (UTC)
I totally have a crush on John Goodman as Dan Conner.
[info]crumpets_ 23rd-Aug-2010 10:00 pm (UTC)
i wish to marry john\dan one day, he's just such a good father and a funny guy too! that entire show was just flawless for the first six seasons or so

[info]dayumsam 23rd-Aug-2010 06:03 am (UTC)
seriously she's a selfish cunt who has no respect for her boyfriends and herself and he treated her like shit. the older i get the more pissed off i am they ended up together.
[info]crabbit 23rd-Aug-2010 02:52 am (UTC)
God, Rachel and Ross frustrated me to no end.
[info]hawaii_bombay 23rd-Aug-2010 02:55 am (UTC)
All that 'We were on a break!!!!!11111!!' shit was fucking annoying.
[info]humanimals 23rd-Aug-2010 03:08 am (UTC)
lol all of their relationship problems were so unfounded and fixable
[info]nb2000 23rd-Aug-2010 03:10 am (UTC)
I agree, they had so many problems that just got ignored as the show went on.

I still think she should have stayed on the plane.
[info]ebil_pran 23rd-Aug-2010 07:44 am (UTC)
IA! I really wanted her to stay on the plane and just leave. Ross annoyed the hell out of me.
I loved Monica & Chandler together, though.
[info]kazu_kumaguro 23rd-Aug-2010 03:56 pm (UTC)
that's true, but I just love seeing them together?
and probably they just saying, 'they have grown up and they are best friends with each others' so it's okay?

how they got together again at the final is kinda abrupt for me though, and as much as I love them I never thought that they would make it into this list.
[info]sillycucumber 23rd-Aug-2010 09:07 am (UTC)
Ross and Rachel, honestly, had nothing in common.
[info]luannab 23rd-Aug-2010 02:52 am (UTC)
