The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time

What is it about a perfectly done horror movie? You can't say there's a single way to do it: some use the time time-tested hot-chick-in-distress formula, some hinge on graphic displays of gore and disembowelment that make you recoil (even though keep watching, you sick bastard), and some simply shake you to your core...and in some cases drive you to therapy. But however a good scare flick works, it works, and in the process creates what are arguably your most vivid movie traumas memories. Ghosts, possessed kids, mutant killers, zombies—everyone has their own fear button, and everyone can have theirs pressed. Everyone. Point is, you may not find every movie in our collection of 50 to be paralyzingly creepy, but no matter who you are, best believe that there's at least one in here that'll haunt your dreams and seriously threaten your bladder control. But enough talking—it's Halloween time, so man up and click the image below to relive some of the scariest joints Hollywood (and France, and Spain, and low-budget filmmakers) has ever churned out.

Goddamn, I love horror movies
scargo 17th-Aug-2010 10:53 am (UTC)
are they serious with this list? paranormal activity was a joke
secondanchor 17th-Aug-2010 10:56 am (UTC)
I liked it but I don't think it should be #2
southparkkid 18th-Aug-2010 02:55 am (UTC)
It shouldn't even be on the list tbh...
davejohn 17th-Aug-2010 10:57 am (UTC)
paranormal activity
drag me to hell
the ring

i could go on an on...so much facepalm
nimago 17th-Aug-2010 11:02 am (UTC)
as was open water
zoewwelover 17th-Aug-2010 11:10 am (UTC)
I havent seen it, only the trailer, IA with you but people say its really scary. I found drag me to hell freaky as with the big dramatic random moments at the movies and the old lady scared me bad
england88533 17th-Aug-2010 11:14 am (UTC)
ikr?
inthiscolony 17th-Aug-2010 11:24 am (UTC)
seriously
blenderhead 17th-Aug-2010 11:37 am (UTC)
Ikr? I was so bored.
megedeborch 17th-Aug-2010 11:54 am (UTC)
mte
bluebear_74 17th-Aug-2010 12:55 pm (UTC)
That movie was Zzzzzz. 10% of it was scary/interesting.
clubland 17th-Aug-2010 01:05 pm (UTC)
Drag Me To Hell is on this list and you're bitching about Paranormal Activity?
vehiclesshockme 17th-Aug-2010 01:47 pm (UTC)
As a horror fan, I am insulted by this list.
jainypoo 17th-Aug-2010 01:59 pm (UTC)
It scared the shit out of me b\c my sister and I grew up thinking our house was haunted. I had these vivid night terrors that something would pull me out of my bed by my legs and pull me into darkness. When I saw that part of the movie, I cried...for seriousness. I think my reason for being terrified by it was different than most people's, though.
katrinar 17th-Aug-2010 02:10 pm (UTC)
seriously! the US version of funny games was TERRIBLE. hellraiser is a joke!
andthenwekisss 17th-Aug-2010 06:27 pm (UTC)
My friend and I laughed the whole way through. :(
ohyoudo 17th-Aug-2010 08:48 pm (UTC)
and higher than The Exorcist lol what
sweetkatastrphe 18th-Aug-2010 08:38 pm (UTC)
That was pretty much my only thought while I was scrolling through. The ones I've seen are good, but scary? Lol no.
srparker328 17th-Aug-2010 10:53 am (UTC)
yeah, but about half of these films up here are not "scary", just cheesy and funny, and maybe a little unnecessarily gory
koalafrog 17th-Aug-2010 06:29 pm (UTC)
Yeah, this seems more like a "horror movies we love!" list rather than actually scary movies.
paula3000 18th-Aug-2010 03:11 am (UTC)
Like Basket Case! Loved that movie.

I'm almost surprised Humanoids From The Deep isn't on this list. LOL
davejohn 17th-Aug-2010 10:56 am (UTC)
So many UNSCARY movies...more like hilarious movies
aleisha_xo 17th-Aug-2010 02:11 pm (UTC)
ikr?
masquerade_07 17th-Aug-2010 10:56 am (UTC)
I was too scared to even go pee while watching Rec. Can't wait for the third one.
kotori99 17th-Aug-2010 12:06 pm (UTC)
I didn't know that they were making a third one. It makes me happy :D
thewaughnman 17th-Aug-2010 12:24 pm (UTC)
And a fourth one, too. They're called [REC]: Genesis (it's a prequel) and [REC]: Apocalypse, a sequel to [REC]2.
ovo_kinder 17th-Aug-2010 01:02 pm (UTC)
I watched the first one in a movie theatre at night and I was too scared to go home afterwards.
boe_moi 17th-Aug-2010 01:27 pm (UTC)
WHAT THEY ARE MAKING A THIRD ONE. I APPROVE.
pop_0ff 18th-Aug-2010 10:28 pm (UTC)
I'm so mad. Rec 2 played for one day in Boston recently and I missed it.
candy_phobia 17th-Aug-2010 10:57 am (UTC)
The Shining is cool but totally not the scariest movie of all time.
lexiesloan 17th-Aug-2010 12:48 pm (UTC)
If Kubrick had stuck to the book, it would have been pretty terrifying.
vehiclesshockme 17th-Aug-2010 01:47 pm (UTC)
The mini-series > the movie.
andi88 17th-Aug-2010 02:44 pm (UTC)
THIS. Nobody ever agrees with me but I was so disappointed by the movie because I watched it right after reading the book.
welcome_to_1984 17th-Aug-2010 02:50 pm (UTC)
I guess the TV remake was a lot closer to the book. Stephen King was not thrilled with Jack Nicholson being casted, as he felt he already looked a little crazy. He wanted Jack Torrance to really start off as a mellow dude and just slowly unravel...to the point where he was really scary.

I've never seen the TV version or the one they did of Carrie some time ago..
patidifuso 17th-Aug-2010 10:57 am (UTC)
Paranormal activity? WTF????????????????????????????
I'm just glad they didn't forget [REC]
xballet 17th-Aug-2010 10:58 am (UTC)
maybe im just not a pussy but most of these didn't scare me

at all
hergun_wentbang 18th-Aug-2010 07:12 pm (UTC)
your icon is scarier than half of these movies.
threestories 17th-Aug-2010 10:58 am (UTC)
i cannot watch scary movies. i've had like a phobia ever since i was like 7 and accidentally watched a bit of Scary Movie when Omar Epps got stabbed in the throat through the bathroom cubicle and i've been scared ever since. yeah...
zoewwelover 17th-Aug-2010 11:11 am (UTC)
When i was a friends birthday sleepover (i was 10) we snuck and watched it. Back then i had no idea what was going on and didnt get anything LOLOL
sexi_squidward 17th-Aug-2010 12:15 pm (UTC)
Paranormal Activity is the ONLY horror movie I enjoyed

When I was 10 I saw Poltergeist

RUINED ME...I started putting make believe voodoo spells on my closet every night to ensure no giant scary heads came out to kill me
thewaughnman 17th-Aug-2010 12:25 pm (UTC)
That was either Scream 2 or 'Omar Epps' was actually Damon Wayans.
andi88 17th-Aug-2010 02:46 pm (UTC)
Lol yeah. I'm surprised you're the only one who mentioned it. We know.
emtqueen85 17th-Aug-2010 07:28 pm (UTC)
And he got stabbed in the head, not the throat...
chicago_undead 17th-Aug-2010 02:11 pm (UTC)
neither can i.

i saw the trailer for bride of chuckie on tv when i was little and i have been scared ever since
visceralvamp 17th-Aug-2010 03:17 pm (UTC)
I try to avoid them at all costs. The Ring absolutely ruined me.

I like The Shining and Silence of the Lambs, though. SotL I consider to be more of a thriller, anyway.
_pluginbaby 17th-Aug-2010 03:37 pm (UTC)
halloween ruined me for life
fickledame 17th-Aug-2010 03:45 pm (UTC)
Do you mean Scream? It's Scream he gets stabbed in. Scary Movie is the joke one, where a penis come through... ;)
toldmelies 17th-Aug-2010 05:25 pm (UTC)
i absolutely hate scary movies but my friends forced me to watch the strangers with them... i couldn't sleep for days.
callarose 18th-Aug-2010 02:49 am (UTC)
mte. I haven't seen any of these films and I don't intend to. Scares me like hell.

Edited at 2010-08-18 02:50 am (UTC)
daisyfreshdolly 17th-Aug-2010 10:59 am (UTC)
I just finished watching poughkeepsie tapes, and I think it definitely belongs on this list *shudder*
abyss_skyward 17th-Aug-2010 11:39 am (UTC)
I keep hearing about this. Is it really that disturbing?
I haven't took the plunge into watching it yet, I'm kind of nervous lol
affliction 17th-Aug-2010 11:58 am (UTC)
OMG I WANTED TO DIE WHEN I SAW THAT.

UGH WHEN HE'S IN HER HOUSE.

JFC.
melissa_ivory 17th-Aug-2010 03:28 pm (UTC)
what film are you talking about, cause i have to see it now.
emtqueen85 17th-Aug-2010 07:29 pm (UTC)
I have that on my Netflix queue. Is it properly scary because it sounds really interesting.

That and Midnight Meat Train.
lubowskee 17th-Aug-2010 10:59 am (UTC)
List is totally wrong tbh. The Shining was very scary but the Exorcist less scary than Paranormal Activity. I don't bloody think so.

Also, I totally forgot about the Serpent and the Rainbow. I remember it being quite creepy so I will have to rewatch that.
wicked_plum7 17th-Aug-2010 04:01 pm (UTC)
The Serpent and the Rainbow is kind of like a family joke, because we're Haitian...so my Dad and I used to watch and be like "Yeah that's what you get white guy for going to Haiti!"
ebil_pran 17th-Aug-2010 11:00 am (UTC)
2. Paranormal Activity.

... What? That was more laughable than scary.
nimago 17th-Aug-2010 11:04 am (UTC)
I had to leave the theater because I got a migraine and watching the movie made me vomit...so i missed the "scary part" but i was like, this shit isn't even suspenseful for me to care enough to watch the ending...

paranormal activity was so freakin' lame.
ebil_pran 17th-Aug-2010 11:11 am (UTC)
Ouch! Getting a migraine? :(
Yeah it wasn't scary! And this is coming from someone who is really easy to scare! Most of the cinema was freaked out and screaming at parts, but I was sitting at the back with my popcorn laughing away.
secondanchor 17th-Aug-2010 11:00 am (UTC)
I watched this dodgy version of REC with english voiceover actors who couldn't act for shit and it ruined the whole thing
ovo_kinder 17th-Aug-2010 01:02 pm (UTC)
...why would you do that.
secondanchor 17th-Aug-2010 01:26 pm (UTC)
I didn't know it would be like that! :( and there was no way to turn it off
articulation 17th-Aug-2010 11:00 am (UTC)
The Descent isn't on here, thus the list is invalid.
officer_down 17th-Aug-2010 11:06 am (UTC)
i clicked on this list expecting to see it.
candy_phobia 17th-Aug-2010 11:06 am (UTC)
Everloving son of a mother lover that movie was freaky.
missy_mayhem 17th-Aug-2010 11:07 am (UTC)
Agreed.
introdelusion 17th-Aug-2010 11:56 am (UTC)
One of the few movies that genuinely terrified me. I had nightmares/couldn't sleep for weeks.
kotori99 17th-Aug-2010 12:07 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I was expecting to see it.
lacey_menacey 17th-Aug-2010 12:13 pm (UTC)
My God! Thanks to this film I learned that I get Claustrophobia when other people are in enclosed spaces.
mirabellawotr 17th-Aug-2010 01:13 pm (UTC)
I seriously almost had to shut this movie off. I was fine once the eviscerations started, but when they were climbing through all those tiny tunnels, omg, no.
maur_ani23 17th-Aug-2010 01:26 pm (UTC)
That movie was terrifying, I couldn't stop thinking about it after.
la_petite_singe 17th-Aug-2010 01:33 pm (UTC)
Seriously. I was just thinking about that movie last night because I went to see Centurion, and there was a director Q&A (and it's the same director). That movie is so disturbing, and not just because of the crawlers. O____o
vehiclesshockme 17th-Aug-2010 01:49 pm (UTC)
Seriously. I loved that movie and it made me jump which is hard to do.
visceralvamp 17th-Aug-2010 03:18 pm (UTC)
I haven't seen it, but I frequently see it listed as one of people's scariest movies, so I agree.
hazel_belle 17th-Aug-2010 03:21 pm (UTC)
That movie... scared me.
explodingpuppet 17th-Aug-2010 04:45 pm (UTC)
I'd forgotten about that movie, but omg YES. I get freaked out just thinking about it.
st00pidness 17th-Aug-2010 06:03 pm (UTC)
love that movie so much
bubbleteaaa 17th-Aug-2010 06:23 pm (UTC)
The part that freaked me out the most in that movie is when the lady's bone cracks and pierces her skin. So gross!!!!
koalafrog 17th-Aug-2010 06:32 pm (UTC)
iawtc

I'm still pissed off I didn't watch it the first time at the cinema because that is movie that NEEDS to be seen in the cinema.

I haven't watched a horror movie through my hands since I was 8, but the Descent did it to me D:
laughing_wild 17th-Aug-2010 06:42 pm (UTC)
AGREED. I mean, come on.
enjoyelsilence 18th-Aug-2010 06:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that movie genuinely scared me.
alina_crystal 18th-Aug-2010 06:53 pm (UTC)
How the FUCK did anyone find that scary? It was so boring. The Ring and Paranormal Activity still keep me up at night, but The Descent was laughable, uneventful.. it was so bad.
fayefil 19th-Aug-2010 04:23 am (UTC)
YES THAT MOVIE SCARED THE FUCK OUT OF ME.
davejohn 17th-Aug-2010 11:00 am (UTC)
Funny Games is not scary...i watched the original and had zero sympathy for the family, they were stupid and annoying...and after the remote control scene i couldn't take the movie seriously anymore anyway
zoram 17th-Aug-2010 12:55 pm (UTC)
You aren't supposed to have any sympathy for them. That's the point.
sjorn 17th-Aug-2010 03:49 pm (UTC)
why weren't you supposed to have any sympathy for them? i watched it and i didn't think they did anything wrong
che_peso 17th-Aug-2010 02:14 pm (UTC)
after having so many people tell me how scary funny games was, i was sooo disappointed. i thought it was entertaining but def not scary.
hellb 17th-Aug-2010 02:31 pm (UTC)
I was more turned on by the hotness of Michael Pitt to be scared, TBH.

Was a great film though--have the DVD. :D
hellb 17th-Aug-2010 03:37 pm (UTC)
BTW, did you watch the remake (with Micahel Pitt) or just the original?
yacrazybeatle 17th-Aug-2010 05:02 pm (UTC)
yeah i never understood why when they run into the neighbor they arent just like "GET ON HIM HES TRYING TO KILL ME!" and then attack
drasticsigns 17th-Aug-2010 09:32 pm (UTC)
that movie pissed me off
hyearts 17th-Aug-2010 11:02 am (UTC)
28 Days Later was the lamest movie I have ever seen. Not even remotely scary.
fabouluz 17th-Aug-2010 11:12 am (UTC)
I prefer 28 weeks later.
abyss_skyward 17th-Aug-2010 11:40 am (UTC)
I fucking love that movie. The score is insanely good.
thatshot 17th-Aug-2010 12:12 pm (UTC)
this.
maur_ani23 17th-Aug-2010 01:24 pm (UTC)
omg the ending fucked me up, I think the boy developed rage and killed his sister and the pilot, thus infecting the French.
vzylexy 17th-Aug-2010 03:28 pm (UTC)
28 Weeks Later is horrible. "Hey, it's very important no one go outside the quarantine zone." Cut to the kids outside the zone, "Sir, there's two children outside the zone, ah, well, let them be." *sighs*
deja_vu822 17th-Aug-2010 08:09 pm (UTC)
it was so surprisingly good.
my_cat_is_grey 17th-Aug-2010 01:44 pm (UTC)
Aw, I love 28 Days Later, but I agree, I don't think it's very scary. I didn't watch it expecting a horror movie, though, so I guess I liked it more for the story because I wasn't waiting to be terrified. I remember seeing 28 Weeks Later and thinking that it was just focusing on the gore-y horrifying part of 28 Days Later, which wasn't what the original was going for.
hellb 17th-Aug-2010 02:33 pm (UTC)
IA. Overrated and boring. I don't get why this film had some many ppl peeing their pants (including GUYS I know...)
