Star Wars on BluRay in Fall 2011

The Star Wars saga will at long last be released in a high-definition home video format as all six movies come to Blu-Ray in a Box Set in Fall 2011, as announced by George Lucas this morning at Celebration V. At the fan convention's Main Event, thousands of Star Wars fans braved the muggy heat of an Orlando morning to queue for a one-time only stage session between George Lucas and The Daily Show's Jon Stewart. Stewart asked Lucas questions submitted from the fan community, and one of the most frequently asked questions submitted online prior to the Main Event was about the saga's release on Blu-Ray.

"I wish I could say it was coming out this year," said Lucas, "but it will come out next year."

The set will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films, with the highest picture and audio quality, along with extensive special features.

PRAISE THE FORCE!
[info]m1nderb1nder 15th-Aug-2010 01:22 am (UTC)
EXCEPT THERE BETTER BE TWO DIFFERENT BOX SETS BECAUSE THE PREQUELS NEVER HAPPENED IN MY BOOK
[info]tammyinlalaland 15th-Aug-2010 01:44 am (UTC)
thank you... if Lucas made Han never happen in the pre-quels it is not Star Wars, the end
[info]i_m_mrswood 15th-Aug-2010 01:22 am (UTC)
Release 2 separate box sets please, then we'll talk.
[info]cricketgrl 15th-Aug-2010 02:39 am (UTC)
Exactly, those prequels were such fuckery... I can't even... D:
[info]grande_latte 15th-Aug-2010 01:22 am (UTC)
AWESOME

but i'll stick to my DVDS
[info]miakun 15th-Aug-2010 02:52 am (UTC)
I refuse to have the copies where he added stupid shit, like Han not shooting first, or the ridiculous DANCING ALIEN CGI POP STAR at Jabba's palace.
[info]mydrivethru 15th-Aug-2010 01:22 am (UTC)
Upgrading to blu ray rn
[info]elijahmarie 15th-Aug-2010 01:25 am (UTC)
I tried to get a blu-ray or whatever but it's too much fucking money, wtf. I'mma wait in 2020 when those shits are like 10 dollars.
[info]missheidimontag 15th-Aug-2010 01:41 am (UTC)
thats my plan too bb :)
[info]sopardonme 15th-Aug-2010 02:11 am (UTC)
the players are expensive (though cheaper on black friday), but there are amazing deals to be had throughout the year/black friday on the blu-ray discs!
[info]paula3000 15th-Aug-2010 02:02 am (UTC)
Let's see... I've bought them on VHS, VHS with THX, Pan & Scan, widescreen, dvd & HD dvd. I think I'm going to pass on the Blu-Ray.
[info]mistress_f 15th-Aug-2010 01:22 am (UTC)
im honestly excited for this. i foresee an hq-starwars-marathon sometime in fall 2011 (i might skip the second trilogy though)
[info]bizarrre 15th-Aug-2010 01:45 am (UTC)
they really are. The 3rd one only gets my respect because of the fight scene between Darth Vader and Obi Wan
[info]mistress_f 15th-Aug-2010 01:59 am (UTC)
seriously. painful to sit trough. at least revenge of the sith was enjoyable/entertaining fur fucks sake.
[info]aka_plynn 15th-Aug-2010 01:23 am (UTC)
But will IV, V, and VI be the original versions, or the shitty ones with the added CGI is the question.

Also: Han shot first.
[info]vzylexy 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
This what I want to know.
[info]vzylexy 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
This is*
[info]anijen21 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
that is the burning question, isn't it
[info]devil_details 15th-Aug-2010 01:40 am (UTC)
Supposedly they're gonna be the special editions.
[info]miakun 15th-Aug-2010 02:53 am (UTC)
PROBABLY THE SHITTY ONES, SINCE HE "LOST" THE GOOD QUALITY TAPES OF THE ORIGINALS.
[info]someweirdguy 15th-Aug-2010 02:56 am (UTC)
I decided to watch the original three after many years, and at the end of ROTJ I was like "Wow no wonder Lucas hired Hayden Christensen! He looks just like that guy! ... wait... holy shit that is Hayden Christensen!"

sucks for Sebastian Shaw :(
[info]ebertrules 15th-Aug-2010 01:23 am (UTC)
blueray is probably not going to last past the next 4 years.
[info]anijen21 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
lol ikr

by the time it comes out no one will care anymore
[info]ebertrules 15th-Aug-2010 01:47 am (UTC)
Just my opinion, but I think they're going to move on to streaming or downloading to hard drives on tvs pretty soon. My friend's dad worked for a tech company and he was on a project to basically combine tvs and computers to make it so you could wirelessly download or stream movies to your tv. We can kind of already do that by hooking up computers to tvs, but this would cut out the need for a computer since all the hardware will already be on your tv.
[info]nowt 15th-Aug-2010 01:38 am (UTC)
I'm curious, why exactly do you think this? (Know that my mind is mostly barren when it comes to technology, though.) It seems like most people I know have HD players and buy BluRay films whenever possible. Is it not as in demand as it seems?

(You'll now tell me you were being facetious or something...)
[info]beating_heartss 15th-Aug-2010 02:07 am (UTC)
No it won't because people will always want a hard copy of a movie, no matter if it's streaming online or not. People like to have these things and eventually when DVD players get phased out as Blu-Rays take over (no matter if in 2 years or 10 years, it will eventually happen) people will still need a player to play the things they have already because even if it's streaming, there are going to be movies missing from that library.
[info]shuttered 15th-Aug-2010 01:23 am (UTC)
I lahv blu-ray

I don't like buying DVDs anymore but dammit they're so cheap
[info]you_lose_fool 15th-Aug-2010 01:23 am (UTC)
non special edition original trilogy on bluray somehow please please please
[info]kookyklam 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
its higher quality than dvd, but it only looks amazing if you have a big enough tv
[info]elijahmarie 15th-Aug-2010 01:27 am (UTC)
so, it's not worth it if you have a 12 inch tv?
[info]kookyklam 15th-Aug-2010 01:23 am (UTC)
i have yet to see a reason to buy bluray

streaming and downloading is the future, and it serves me just fine.
[info]cricketgrl 15th-Aug-2010 02:46 am (UTC)
Keep waiting another 2 decades then because they haven't scratched the surface on digital distribution. Unless Steve Jobs miraculously resolves that laundry list of problems with encoding and streaming.
[info]dedradawn 15th-Aug-2010 03:01 pm (UTC)
Netflix rents out bluray discs now, so guess who will NEVER purchase one? Although I have the player.
[info]loganx2 15th-Aug-2010 01:23 am (UTC)
Just came here to day say I LOVE CARRIE FISHER!!! Her Wishful Drinking books is fucking hilarious.
[info]vandale 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
I knew Han Solo was the way to go. Luke didn't age very well ...
[info]grande_latte 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
han was always the coolest plus he had the millennium falcon
[info]numb_crystal 15th-Aug-2010 01:27 am (UTC)
luke also got into that accident between filming the trilogy
[info]paula3000 15th-Aug-2010 02:11 am (UTC)
Yeah, his car went over a cliff in Malibu. Poor guy says his nose was pretty much wiped off his face. :(
[info]dedradawn 15th-Aug-2010 03:02 pm (UTC)
Yep, in "Empire", they explain the change in his looks by having him beaten by that snow monster.
[info]emmataylorr 15th-Aug-2010 01:52 am (UTC)
Luke really was not that bad in IV
but after that just no
[info]grande_latte 15th-Aug-2010 01:24 am (UTC)
episode 1 wasn't THAT bad. but 2 and 3 were a mess. i pretend they never happened or jarjar binks.
[info]skeet_skeet 15th-Aug-2010 01:27 am (UTC)
One was too heavy on exposition and the plot got lost in that, two and three were pretty and shiny and that's about it.
[info]pastelstar 15th-Aug-2010 01:30 am (UTC)
ita. I don't mind episode 1 but the other two I watched once and that's enough.
[info]knives_chau18 15th-Aug-2010 01:40 am (UTC)
Well, I thought 1 and 3 weren't so bad. However, I thought that 2 was the weakest of prequels. Episode 2 was kinda a mess.
[info]sparkfactory 15th-Aug-2010 04:04 am (UTC)
episode 1 opened my nine year old heart to the love of my life, ewan mcgregor. so for that reason it will always be ~special~ to me
[info]honey_child 15th-Aug-2010 08:10 am (UTC)
3 was saved for me by the final shot on Tatooine.
[info]bizarrre 15th-Aug-2010 01:25 am (UTC)
I've been watching the Star Wars marathon on Spike today. My favorite movie has to be "Empire Strikes Back" While "A New Hope" is fantastic and does a great job at setting up the story, i don't find it to be all that exciting after the first time you watch it.
[info]numb_crystal 15th-Aug-2010 01:26 am (UTC)
idk why, but my fav is the 3rd that's on rn
[info]kristinchaos 15th-Aug-2010 01:29 am (UTC)
Yeah, Empire is my favourite too.
[info]i_m_mrswood 15th-Aug-2010 01:42 am (UTC)
ESB is definitely the best film.
[info]tammyinlalaland 15th-Aug-2010 01:46 am (UTC)
3 has ewoks
[info]__xgirlafraid 15th-Aug-2010 02:06 am (UTC)
and the metal bikini.
[info]bizarrre 15th-Aug-2010 02:10 am (UTC)
And that's exactly why it's not my favorite.
[info]novembers_sky 15th-Aug-2010 02:31 am (UTC)
i've been watching all day too.

empire is my favorite as well.. tho return of the jedi does have some really good parts.
[info]miakun 15th-Aug-2010 02:56 am (UTC)
Empire had the least George Lucas influence in it. There's a clear arc going through and it has some amazing directing (unlike the prequels that destroy perfectly good actors) and the writing is sharp.

Anyway, I think most people think Empire is the best of the six.
[info]nerglish 15th-Aug-2010 11:10 pm (UTC)
ESB is the best because of Lando and his Cloud City!
