American Idiot cast performs on Good Morning America

The cast opened with the chorus of "American Idiot," accompanied by a mixture of choreographed movement and punkish freestyle head-banging, getting the audience excited. They ended with the salute to punk rock, their fists held in the air as the audience screamed.

The audience waited patiently as host Robin Roberts talked about the cast and show, but some of the actors passed the time by doing flips. Finally, lead actor John Gallagher Jr. stepped onto the stage with a guitar, singing the beginning verse of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," accompanied by violins, and eventually the rest of the cast. Then they transitioned to the faster-paced "Holiday."

After a break, and more praise from George Stephanopoulis, star Rebecca Jones sang "Letterbomb" (with some swear words taken out) while the other female castmembers danced. After Jones called out, "Wake up, America!" the guys arrived onstage and sang the opening verse of "American Idiot."

Guitars in hand, the cast ended their set with "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," the song that has ended many a Green Day show.

how the hell did green day inspire a broadway musical?
filmic_1109 17th-Jul-2010 06:32 pm (UTC)
Well American Idiot is actually a rock opera...so they went from there.
queenwashu 17th-Jul-2010 06:55 pm (UTC)
it's actually a REALLY beautifully innovative musical.
grande_latte 17th-Jul-2010 06:23 pm (UTC)
what's the plot of this musical?
jessepinkman 17th-Jul-2010 06:25 pm (UTC)
3 friends, trying to get out of their town, one's girlfriend gets pregnant - stays, one joins the army, and one meets a girl and starts having problems.

Wow, I'm amazed I recognized him so fast as the guy who played twenty year old Conor in Nip/Tuck.

I've watched too much of it lately with it being in Netflix.

I will never get tired of seeing him on ONTD (even though I hope he never actually checks this place out after that fan sign thing because I think he'd be scarred for life).

I'm loling at the "salute to punk rock" from a bunch of musical-theater freakshows live on Good Morning America. I think we're through the looking glass/in the matrix, etc.
filmic_1109 17th-Jul-2010 06:38 pm (UTC)
someone has an open mind.
principino 17th-Jul-2010 06:45 pm (UTC)
I do! But also critical thinking skills.
theactualworst 17th-Jul-2010 06:38 pm (UTC)
Yes because ALL musical theater kids are gay and only like showtunes.
_______awshucks 17th-Jul-2010 06:50 pm (UTC)

jiigsaw 17th-Jul-2010 06:39 pm (UTC)

jessepinkman 17th-Jul-2010 06:44 pm (UTC)

queenwashu 17th-Jul-2010 06:59 pm (UTC)

beautifulmonstr 17th-Jul-2010 06:58 pm (UTC)
i remember loving this album when it came out - but i just can't listen to some broadway people sing the songs. its weird
filmic_1109 17th-Jul-2010 07:00 pm (UTC)
Well the broadway people doing this show don't have "broadway" type voices..
beautifulmonstr 17th-Jul-2010 07:03 pm (UTC)
its still all harmonized and weird. idk don't get me wrong, i'm not opposed to broadway at all, i'm just not really into this
